What do the Roles really mean?

I've been playing this game for years but I'm still pretty confused about what each lane exists for, outside of the historical context of previous games that had three lanes and a jungle.

Every role seems to have a large selection of champions that creates a wide spectrum of how you can actually play that role. Champs frequently go between roles. So what is actually the point of the "top", "mid" and "bot" metas?

the "lane" metas pretty much are the "keep an eye on that lane, because it will likely be the one causing the most problems"

as for what champions go where, Riot for the most part is fine with us taking champions out of their preferred lane into other areas

if it becomes too much of an issue they tweak some things to try and get the champion back where they belong

most mage champions built for mid lane can easily support or be apc due to their kit (there are very few who can't)

with recent changes to jungle, it has partly opened it up to more weird picks

all in all take everything as it comes become it will likely change in some fashion within a few months

bot is the safest lane and has the more important objective near it. so you take hard scalers and their suppourts thier. mid is the shortest lane meaning its easier to run, so you take champions that can kill quick and fast, also since its in the middle roamers that can't jungle also go their too. top lane is like bot, but less important. their is no goal top lane so you take champions that the team either needs for later like tanks or people that out survive eachother top. jungle is jungle
