If You Think the Game is 'Too Stompy'

Penta Penguin··122 votes·6,666 views

It sounds like some of you care way too much about 'doing well' right now.

The ranked season just ended, no ranked going on right now. By season start, if there is a problem with game pace it will be fixed.

I've had plenty of fun trying out the champion changes and messing around with masteries and new builds.

Pre-season is about experimenting, learning, changes settling in, and most importantly having fun. There is no point in try-harding right now with the rapid changes that will be happening.

If worst comes to worst for you, just take a F'ing break and come back when things have settled. Stop flooding the boards with useless complaining about how "Games end in 5 minutes" and "ADCs literally take no damage" (that one, I really did hear from one of my friends).

People aren't mad that they're losing. People are mad that the game has become incredibly boring even if you're winning.

You sir have found exactly what was bugging me with season 6. I did 5 games and i'm already tired of season 6. I don't think that i'm gonna play League at least until the next patch. Getting Bursted from 4000 to 0 by a random adc or being carried by a yasuo all game isnt fun.

Balithar5 votes

This, I get more satisfaction from beating a competent enemy with my own competent allies. I prefer even match ups, cuz then it comes down to real decision making and skill, who will make the play that wins the match? who is going to fumble? Are you gonna pull off an amazing 1v5 play against an equally experienced team? Just thinking about that is exciting!

KarKzz4 votes

The game became boring because a lot of "cheap" way to win are now very strong. Basicaly, all the champion with low counterplay got buffed. And once they get one or two items, they can stomp. This patch highly reduced the "outplay potencial" and the decision making. If you don't play a champion that can abuse the current state of the game, you get stomp. And those champion are generaly boring as fuck. Exemples : Irelia Jax Kayle Tryndamere XinZhao

YES. This patch actually made me thought of what I should be worrying more about. I should be worrying more about college than this tiresome ol' patch of a game. Actually, I'm growing tiresome of this in general. (._.') Alas, my habits brought me back here in this sizzling hell.

It's not that I'm focused on winning, it's just that it's a valid criticism. Something is causing the games to teter irrevocably towards one team

I have no fun when my main is fucking unplayable in either jungle or lane, as either a carry or a tank.

Penta Penguin9 votes

Wanna tell us who that is and the explicit reasons why you find them unplayable?

BluePolarizer6 votes

Hecarim is unplayable top because he can't win lane anymore due to the flask/potion changes and not being able to lvl. 2 jungle for a fast 2, and he is unplayable jungle due to low sustain and not being able to come out with blue smite at 3 minutes to gank a lane. His mid game power spike is way weaker due to Triforce and jungle items being more expensive.

King Odin3 votes

item 2033 first item makes his laning phase superior to most and then rush item 3047 -> item 3078 was actually a buff to him due to the CD added and then item 3110 and have 30% CDR. His sustain top is great due to all the masteries tuned towards boosting healing and couple that with spirit visage. I have currently most seen Hecarim top and that Hecarim always does well with that given build.

Habitz6 votes

But he'd have to change how he builds!

BluePolarizer2 votes

corrupting bottle is crap compared to flask + pots. He ooms extremely easily now and can't beat Fiora or Tryndamere as easily since he can't start lvl. 2 in lane.

Actually, the missing mana regen mastery is now accessible as a secondary mastery (you used to have to invest more than 9 points for it in the utility tree to get it making you unable to go 21 in another tree). Now you can go 18 in resolve (i'm assuming you took that for the regen masteries) then you can also go 12 into cunning to get that mana regen mastery. Besides, you do build flat mana from glacial, so the missing mana will be even stronger on you.

Triforce is hardly more expensive than it used to be...

BluePolarizer4 votes

I'm a 5 trick pony. I don't have fun with any champions other than Hecarim, Yi, Maokai, Shyvana or Nautilus. Out of those, only Yi is somewhat playable and still inferior to last season because his mid game power spike relative to ADCs has gotten way weaker. All others are absolutely unplayable outside of Naut and Maokai support as peeling CC bots.

In particular, my main (Hecarim) is absolutely unplayable.

I can have just as much fun losing a game as I can winning. (Unleash the downvotes!)

There's nothing fun about a 1-sided stomp. Doesn't matter which side I'm on. And it's hard to learn and experiment when the game snowballs so incredibly fast. Winner is practically determined by first blood and a third of the games close out before 20 minutes.

Prozzak10 votes

I think the game is too stompy, that doesn't mean I do not understand that this is preseason. The problem comes from people thinking that Riot wants the game to be this stompy and that they are never going to address it throughout preseason.

and most importantly having fun

The thing is, you cant really do that lol.

If everyone took a mass exodus from the game, how would Riot balance it out?

People are encouraged to play during the preseason and use the boards and Reddit to voice their thoughts on the game's state. If you don't like those posts, stop reading them.

RISE Shlack1237 votes

I'm going to play devil's advocate here and say that people flooding the boards with their thoughts about the game-state is an important metric for the balance team to look at. Granted, their feedback isn't always useful or even coherent, but when the boards are lit up with "game is too stompy" as far as the eye can see, Riot will start to get the message that the flow of the game needs to be toned down.

The boards are for feedback. Making posts to complain about the "stompy" posts is just as annoying as seeing "stompy" posts everywhere. Ignore the posts you don't like and comment on the ones you do. It's that simple.

Fair Champion7 votes

First time I'm posting on here with regards to preseason, oh boy.

Personally, I find complaints with regard to "stompy" and "snowbally" games to be perfectly fair. It certainly doesn't apply for every game, but I've noticed it in a lot of the games that I've played. When one team begins to get little bit ahead, they snowball very quickly as of preseason. Make no mistake, they had the potential to do that before, but it's much more common now.

This doesn't apply for everyone (in fact, a thread glorifying the preseason's faster games is currently trending on the League subreddit), but personally, I prefer the air longer games with more comeback potential. I relish in games with unexpected but incredible comebacks, or very even matches that can go to either team. That's why LCS fans often like it when a best out of 5 match goes for 5 games. The matchup feels so much more even, like there's room for the victory to go to either side. The same applies for us normal League players. Many of us (though not all) want to have comebacks be possible. When I'm in a match, even if I lose, if the game was close, I still usually have fun. In a game that ends up being a total stomp, you don't feel like you have the potential to make a comeback, and the game feels much more tense and exciting.

Yes, the game may be fixed before the season start, but that's why it's important for people to make threads voicing their opinions. If no one said a word, then Riot wouldn't feel a need to change up the game before the season begins. I agree that a lot of the threads a rather redundant and some can be a little garish, but at the end of the day, many of their complaints are legitimate. We want a fun game, and the only way to achieve a fun game is to make it please the community to a large (though obviously not absolute) degree.

A point that you made that I agree with - if you don't enjoy League, don't play it until preseason ends. Yeah, I can agree with that. Like I said before, I'm not enjoying the preseason update that much myself, so I'm not planning on playing all that much this preseason. Regardless, I think it is important that people voice their opinions so that Riot has a chance to improve the game for when the regular season begins.

tl;dr: We don't want to be try-hards, we want to have fun. But right now, the vast majority of players don't find League to be as fun as it was... which is why people have threads explaining these issues. There's nothing wrong with that.

SuicideJ2 votes

^This. Note: I am a very competitive player and this is basically my feelings on the matter. Close games are way more fun than quick ones. Win or lose.

DRAGOON Burst1 votes

Pretty sure that PBE players pointed certain things out that are being pointed out here, but I'm guessing Riot wants to get bugs out of the way and then get mass feedback from the live community. Isn't that right, Riot?

Kaisha1 votes

Yeah... sure... or in reality Riot doesn't care what we think in the least.

Laraso7 votes

I can't downvote this enough.

I'm getting sick of all of these apologists acting like they know other people's thoughts and feelings better than they do, and telling everyone they're confused/clueless about what they're talking about.

Craft Zeppelin5 votes

What I seriously don't get is about the "comebacks" and "stomps" stuff. Like you got your ass owned in lane. Why the heck do you think you will win for free after that eh? So wierd.

Slamurai Jack4 votes

That's what an entire year of long ass games will do to you. Season 5 was awful in that regard. Win in 20 minutes and then take another 20 minutes to actually close the game.

commando louis3 votes

Personnaly, this is the part i liked the most about League. If one team was really crushing you after laning phase (20-30 mins), you could simply surrender. But when the teams were tied, it took another 20-30 minutes of team work and objective control to finally destroy that inhibitor or take down their entire team. This is what made the game entertaining for me. But now, the game is set after 10 minutes: someone is going 10-0 in lane and snowballs your lane the rest of the game. This isnt the case for every game: only the ones i've played.

RexZor4 votes

I understand they are going to fix it but how will the know if the masses don't say anything. Also so what if ranked is over I enjoy a longer game than the game ending in 20-26 minutes. Its no longer fun if i can't get to late game and exactly test the game.

It is valid criticism. How is Riot supposed to do the changes if nobody says anything?

If literally nobody said anything about games being more snowbally than usual, it would be less likely for this to get fixed. Everyone knows pre-season is weird, but people arent complaining. They are sharing their concerns with Riot in hopes of changing the game for the better, there is nothing wrong with that.

"this sucks" "revert masteries" "yasuo is broken af"x100 "rito is dum"

Clearly these comments are highly thought out and address several keypoints in what needs to be balanced. There is a difference between, "I think Warlord should only affect champions because xyz" and "gg Riot, how did this sorry excuse of a patch make it out of the PBE?"

Besides, they don't NEED players complaining that Yasuo is OP. They have systems in place to look at various metrics on a wide scale. Player concerns are mostly for the game feel and possible hypotheses to lead into since the ecosystem is usually more complicated than people make it out to be. Saying Riot can't make changes without player feedback is honestly just insulting.

Of course, i do agree that complaints could be worded better, and i will not pretend otherwise.

However, i do maintain that player feedback is important, and i didnt mean to say they cant make changes otherwise. What i mean is, the sooner Riot is made aware of a possible issue, the faster it can be properly fixed.

ModKnightsKemplar2 votes

Well, I don't know if you're still reading comments, but the biggest thing about this is providing good feedback.

Even as someone who agrees with the point that preseason is about experimenting, its important to let Riot know which things are good, and which things need to go. Snowballing is not something we need more of. We don't like it.

That's not to say Riot can't have that in preseason. I'm happy to play it this way. For awhile. But it doesn't make for an interesting competitive space, and Riot should know we feel that way.

Silly me, I thought the game was supposed to be enjoyable at any point of developement.
