Why do people use quotes when they aren't quoting anyone?

"Insert obviously fabricated, one sided controversial statement so I can easily rebuttal it. If I put it in quotes it gives it the feel of being said by someone official or someone that actually matters."

These are all pretty much shitposts except for the ones that ACTUALLY are quoting someone worth mentioning. If you have a point about gameplay, just state your opinion. You are intentionally LYING by trying to give the impression that what you "quoted" was said by a Rioter or is actually a majority opinion. Stop making up bullshit "quotes" that you are intentionally setting up in a way to easily counter when NOBODY IMPORTANT EVER SAID IT. Stop lying and putting words in people's mouths

A lot of times they are simply using it as a form of formatting, mostly because they arent aware of other kinds of formatting.

  1. For example.

For another example:

  • they could just do this.

Basically, forum quotations are just a form of formatting. Most of the times.

Some are just full of shit.

Quotes around a statement could either be an honest attempt at an abbreviated paraphrase of their opponent's position... ...or an attempt to set up a straw-man of their opponent's position. So the use of quotes doesn't always indicate dishonesty. Judge for yourself which one you think your they're doing, and call them out if they're misrepresenting you.

No. You do not use qutation marks when paraphrasing. You are no longer paraphrasing. You are lying.
