The New Rift Herald is about to be a bigger Balance Problem

For those that don't know, the new Rift Herald will give you a buff which allows you to summon the Rift Herald in a given lane, where it'll go down and smash down towers (ignoring minions and champions).

It is not a fun game mechanic, either for the team using it or the team defending against it. The team using it makes no choice/gameplay with it other than which lane and when to deploy it. They don't interact with it, control it, and it doesn't do anything for their team other than harass the enemy team. The team defending against it is forced to fight this monster that ignores them.

It definitely will have strategic value in terms of opening up rotations for macro play, but even for the high level of play where this even matters, it will still be seen more as something that's necessary than as something that's engaging or fun. In lower elos it'll just be seen as annoying and/or useless.

And ultimately, if it's any good it's going to be nerfed because of how un-interactive it is, so it'll end up being fairly useless and never taken, which leaves us where this change was supposed to fix in the first place.

Sounds like Herald in general was a bad idea.

Yeah, the Herald never really accomplish her original goal of drawing attention top side. 4 or 5-man bot lane clown fiestas continued to be a thing while Top lane remained an island most the time.

Maybe the new Herald will finally achieve that goal. But will it be worth the balance nightmares?

I can see strategies evolving around ganking top, getting herald, reganking and using it to knock down the inner and inhib towers.

This strategy could easily compete with the dominant 4 man bot lane into bot tower, dragon, mid tower.

Also see MalrothDraonia why being un-interactive isnt a problem.

Hmm... it almost reminds me of an item that exists already. You throw it down and it spawns these little things that attack towers and creeps. That is so interactive. item 3512

It will open up roaming potential, which can increase your enjoyment by potentially killing! Send Harold top and you have a super duper minion to aggro while you roam bot without tp. Am curious if you will be able to tp onto harold.

I think you're ignoring the fact that the whole idea was to make Rift Herald worth fighting over. I think it's an ingenious solution to putting pressure on a single lane without making using it super awkward, or overpowered, which the buff system before did. What is 'engaging' or 'fun' about baron buff? or dragon buff? they just have strategic value, in stats mostly. Rift herald couldn't be that big, so they came up with this. I think you need to take another look at how the game currently works around objectives.

I know how it works around objectives. And I recognize Rift Herald's value as an objective in my post (which you either didn't read or didn't read carefully).

The issue is that even if it's worth fighting over it's not fun. Dragon buff and baron buff ARE fun - they empower your champion and make you stronger. Rift Herald does nothing for you and your own gameplay. Yes, it will have macro value but it's not engaging for either team to play. It will be seen more as something you have to get, something you have to kill when it's spawned - As a result, it will get nerfed if it's any good because no one really will like playing with the buff (especially after the novelty of it wears off) or against the buff.

Then we will be stuck again with a Rift Herald which is pointless to take, which is the problem now and this rework is supposed to fix.

Once again your comment focuses on just things that buff your champion and your ability to 'get kills' as other people have pointed out on this post, having pushing pressure that isn't a champion can open up other play styles and strategy. It makes top lane worth fighting over early instead of it just being an island. Seriously, you need to take a look at some fundamentals. Then you will understand why this herald update looks fairly promising.

This is starting to become a matter of opinion. But seriously, The drake really only gives you a stat buff, and Baron gives you an aura that affects minions. You seriously think those buffs and auras, are more fun than the ability to summon a giant tower pushing threat?

Also, even if you don't control it directly, your always playing around it. It gives you a ton of strategic value, that leaves you with options. You can either defended it from attackers while it helps you push, you could also let it push on it's own, and answer elsewhere on the map.

TL;DR It will make bot stop being a party lane.
