Because of the Way Corki Scales, There is Just No Good Item For Him ATM

So probably everybody knows by now that Corki just isn't as good as he once was anymore. Even before the Trinity Force changes, he had a winrate that is below average but the changes just kicked him over the edge.

The thing that really made me curious is that the other supposed victims of the changes did have working alternative builds. Gangplank winrate was unaffected because of the alternative Penplank build while Yasuo even ironically profited from the whole thing and now has the bruiser build available to him.

Corki on the other hand has no alternative builds and is now sitting at a 46% winrate. The question I want to investigate with this thread is why exactly this is the case and why he doesn't scale with items that well right now. At the end I want to give some suggestions on how I would fix the problems he has, though that is really just for fun and specualation.

So the first scaling problem he has is cooldown reduction (CDR). He surely is an ability caster with his Q, E, Ult and his package but the spell he makes use of the most , his ultimate, does not profit from CDR. This is because it is based off an ammo system that gives you a rocket every few seconds and has a static cooldown of 2 seconds. Because of that, he doesn't profit from the CDR of items that are thought to be core items of him right now, namely Essence Reaver and the current incarnation of Tri-Force.

The next problem he has is that he does not profit from the armor penetration that usual AD caster items give as good as his fellow spellcaster marksmen like Lucian, Jhin and MF. All of them are building armor penetration builds right now because their damage is mostly physical while Corki's damage is mostly magical. Some might argue that even Corki deals a bit of physical damage but looking at the graphs he deals even less than you might think.

Only 21,3% of Corki's total average damage dealt per game is physical, 77,2% is magical and the rest true damage from red. Compare that to Lucian, another spellcaster champion whose damage is 92,7% physical with the rest of his damage being from his W and red.

He could in theory go AP to get access to magic penetration but his scaling just isn't as good as it is with AD. On top of that his autos are much weaker with this build and he does not have access to his ultimate DPS pre level 6, which makes a tremendous difference in lane.

So what he's stuck with is the crit build, but being a spellcaster marskman he just doesn't profit as much from it as an autohitting marksman like Twitch or Tristana would.

To fix all these problems Riot gave him several buffs over the last few patches. But in my opinion all of them didn't adress the core problems he has right now. It also didn't change his winrate.

The late game AD ratio buff on his ult that he has received in 6.11 wasn't all that necessary because his AD ratios are actually already top notch. The problem is that all the AD items he has access to have secondary stats that he just won't make as much use of as other champions do, like pointed out above.

His E base damage and tick rate plus the cooldown on his W and package have been lowered too, and while these buffs are definitely nice they did not spike his winrate either.

So what needs to be done? Here are 3 of my ideas. I'm not a game designer so take it with a grain of salt.

1: Make His Ultimate Scale With CDR: I'm not talking about the 2 second static cooldown of his ultimate because it would not change as much because it is really limited by the stack generation that would stay the same.

So I'm proposing that instead, CDR would lower the time it takes to generate new stacks.

I copied the concept from Teemo's ultimate, which also has an ammo system and it also works with CDR which really helps with his build. Imagine how much less valuable Nashor's Tooth and Morello's would be on him without that.

Of course, those two abilities are very different from each other but if it works on Teemo why wouldn't it work on Corki too?

This would allow Corki to have a better synergy with Tri-Force or an Essence Reaver crit-build.

2: Make His Passive Turn Armor Pen Into Magic Pen: Or what I would like even more is that it's not turned into magic pen, but the magic pen would just be added and the other way around. So Sorcerer's Boots would give an extra 15 armor pen and Youmuu's For example would give you 20 magic pen on top of the physical pen.

Giving him so much free stats might sound scary but it also works with Yasuo's passive and even with it he doesn't build crit anyway. Plus, you must look at it this way: A Youmuu's on Lucian synergizes with 92.7% of his damage while it would synergize with 98.5% of Corki's damage, so the difference is not as big as you would think at first.

This way he would have a really nice penetration build available to him - Sorc Boots, into Youmuu's, Duskblade and other penetration items.

EDIT:

I also just realized that this would make killing tanks much easier for him when he buys Van Dominik's or Mortal Reminer. I never saw a Corki in his current situation ever get into the late game anyway but I imagine that he would struggle with that.

3: Buff His AP Ratios: Even with Hybrid Items like Guinsoo's and Gunblade being around, Corki does not seem to profit from them all that much. His AP ratios are okay, but not good.

This would allow him to be the first ever hybrid marksmen which would definitely be pretty interesting.

But this is also the change I like the least of the 3. It would have the danger of making pure AP mage builds better on him than a Marksman build and that is not what Corki is supposed to do.

I also got to mention that there is a danger of all of these 3 changes or only 1 or 2 of them being too much and making Corki OP for a few patches. But even so I think that something has to be done to adress to problem , becase the current buffs really don't and we can't just let him sit at a 46% winrate.

Let me know what you guys think.

The recharge time on his ult already does get reduced with CDR.

ArnoldSchwarzens1 votes

No it doesn't, lol. Check URF matches, test it in game, look up any reliable site on the internet that quotes it. I found absolutely nothing when I did that.

Hover on recharge time: "This is affected by cooldown reduction."

He needs a small buff, that much is clear.

My only issue is that

A: He wastes too much mana, mana hungry, which means I either rush ER soon or I have to play safe.

B: Even once I finish Trinity Force, it still feels a bit lack luster on damage and by the time I finish it, even when somewhat fed, I end up with like meh damage.

They need to change his passive to 110% physical damage, that way he can benefit from the AD itemisation( black cleaver, ghost blade , last whisper , bortk) and use fervor of battle.

ArnoldSchwarzens2 votes

Well they could but Riot has the philosophy of never reverting changes, unless they are just so bad that the community rampages. Like when they removed the W-Q combo of Ali and immidiately added it again the next patch.

Noam2Kill1 votes

It's not a revert. In season 5 corki's passive was 100% physical + 10% true damage and He could deal with tanks with the bortk+ last whisper build. Now it's impossible to deal with tanks since LS and Void staff are both meh on corki. What i'm asking is 110% physical damage passive that scales with sheen and crit.

it's not a revert, its a new approach. they will have to change his e if they do this tho.

ArnoldSchwarzens2 votes

It already was 55% physical and 55% magical, so a total of 110% of his AD. I thought of that instead, actually misread what you were saying there.

Anyway, even with that, he would still have somewhere around 50% magical and 50% physical damage in total if we take his abilities into account. This would be even worse in my opinion because that would make Sorcs worse than they are now which would suck because they are a must-have on him and one of the few items he can actually make proper use of atm.

On top of that, building armor pen would still not be worth it. It would still be 40-50% less effective than on the usual pen users.

You were also talking about that they'd have to change his E. What are you thinking of?

Noam2Kill1 votes

If they change his passive to 110% physical damage then the MR reduction from E is useless, so it has to reduce armor only, and the amount must be increased.

Sorcs shoes was always good on corki, it just happen to be better against squishy members. in season 5 if you would want to kill a tank you were better off buying attack speed shoes. armor penetration was good because his E ,his auto's and triforce procs were physical. Last whisper was a core item built on s5 corki.

ArnoldSchwarzens1 votes

First off, even if his auto hits would deal only physical damage, his Q and Ult would still deal magic damage and his E would deal half magic and half physical, which makes the MR reduction far from useless.

And more importantly, if you would make Corki deal so much physical damage the theme of "magic damage spellcasting marksman" would not be as strong as it is right now, and this is what Riot intends him to be and what I think to be the defining feature of Corki.

In s5 Corki definitely was much more balanced but just not as interesting. Marksmen did suffer from having a lack of diversity because everyone of them would just be crit building auto attackers.

If you compare that to how they are now - Graves being an all-in marksman in the freaking Jungle aswell as Kindred, Lucian, MF and Jhin being high spell damage dealing casters with penetration builds, Ezreal being the classic poke marksman with his blue build, Trist, Twitch and Jinx following the classic high damage crit auto attack pattern, Ashe and Sivir being utility-based marksmen and of course Corki being the magic damage marksman that casts spells and has mage-like features, the botlane meta is much less stale than it used to be.

Yes, he would probably be more balanced after this but he would also lose his identity which I don't really like.

I think what this comes down to is opinion rather than facts, depending on what you think would be better - going the safe route of making Corki more like his older safe at the expense of making him arguably less unique or perserving his magic damage nature and trying more daring and potentially short-term unhealthy changes.

Noam2Kill1 votes

Honestly the magic damage adc niche just doesn't work because tanks and bruisers counters corki with 1 MR item. Another problem with the magic damage passive is that if its too strong teams and high elo players will play Corki mid instead of corki adc.

The magic damage passive only helps corki to kill low MR targets in a dog fight.

Corki's identity was always the mid game power spike adc and that's what riot should consider when balancing corki.

That's why the only way to let corki be a viable adc again is to change his passive to 110% physical damage.

Anyway we should create a @meddler thread and ask whats riot's plans with Corki.

Guinsoos Rageblade and Hextech Gunblade are 2 good items on him...

Basically, build him like you do a Hybrid assassin...that should work out good.

ArnoldSchwarzens1 votes

I highly doubt that, building AP creates the problems that I've mentioned when I talked about Pen. Plus, his AP ratios are much worse than his AD ratios, though they're still decent I guess.

He won't make use of the Guinsoo's phantom hit passive and it'll be hard for him to stack it. On top of that, Gunblade only gives you 40 AD which really isn't a lot and the healing effect of it is cut down to 1/3 for every of his abilities which makes it terrible in 1v1 situations. I talked about this in this thread here: http://boards.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/c/gameplay-balance/lndxLhds-why-riot-gave-up-on-spell-vamp-and-why-they-should-give-it-another-try

And lastly, what would you even build after that. It'll be pretty late to get a crit build to scale up, which you should do really early on because that's his best option right now.

gunblade is good item for him. the lifesteal. but also the active. rageblade however is bad

Lady Hammerlock1 votes

If the penetration is to be changed it needs to be 50% 50%

so 50% of any armour pen becomes magic pen and vice versa (doenst stack with itself)

ArnoldSchwarzens1 votes

Yeah but you gotta keep in mind that 77,2% of his damage is magical so the vice versa thing will hurt him more than it would help him when it comes to Sorcerer's Boots. Also, this would make penetration much less worth it for him than for its other users, like pointed out above, since yet again, he doesn't profit from the armor pen that doesn't get converted because he mainly deals magic dmg.

NotCounter1 votes

I think the way Corki is (scaling bad into late game and not having strong item options) is because Corki is intended to be a strong mid-game/play-making ADC since is mini rework emphasized mixed damage and the passive he was given (both are bad for an ADC late game).

ArnoldSchwarzens1 votes

I think no matter how much you are intending a champion to be good in the mid - and early game, you can't just make a champion have no good item options for him and basically doom him to rely on base damages. I also think that is not what Riot intended fro him. And right now he's even bad at that, his mid and early just isn't as scary as it was with the old Tri-Force.

Also I would not say that his passive is bad for the late game on its own. It's just the fact that it's hard to find items that make the magic damage valuable, which is the point of why I wrote all of the above.

Noam2Kill1 votes

Right now corki' doesnt have a meaningful 2nd-3rd item power spike like he used to with the TF-RFC-IE build.

With trinity force losing crit, the build path is so bad most of the players prefer to buy Gunblade or BT as a second item.

The passive magic damage split is another reason for that, that's why his passive should be changed to 110% physical damage..

Liandrys seems like a valid item (idk don't sue).

Great Ozymandius1 votes

This would allow him to be the first ever hybrid marksmen which would definitely be pretty interesting.

The top kogmaw build is something like wits, runaans, bork, rageblade,

  1. As pointed out by others, his ult already scales with cdr,
  2. He already has a powerfull early-mid, this would just make him broken whenever the meta favours earlygame and still bad late, unless %pen also is inclouded, which would just warrent **heavy **nerfs to him in the future as it would be totally broken.
  3. One way to help him, though one has to be very carefully, else pure ap builts with item 3151 +item 3116 become the norm, and i think it's important for his identity that he stays more focused on AD instead of turning into a generic piokemage. Maybe an small ap ratio on his passve, increasing the ratio of his AAs might work.

Imo the best way off buffing him would be increaseing his AS ratios. More base AS, maybe reduced recharge time on ult up to a cap(like yasuo Q), more tics on his E up to an cap and so on. His main items still is item 3078 , which grants 40%as that are off little use to corki atm, and item 3091 would harmonize well with AA-focused magic damage, just that his synergie with on-hit and AS is pretty poor. This would alow him to still have unique builtpaths fitting his unique playstyle.
