New Champions Should Be Disabled When Playing Ranked

Virgin Ray··104 votes·3,586 views

I don't know how long the disable should be, but people who lock in a champ that has been released for 30 minutes will lose their lane and pretty much the game. I refrain from playing ranked whenever a new champion is released for about 1-2 weeks because literally no one knows how to play him/her and there are some idiots out there who insta-lock a new champion and feed like hell.

I wouldn't say disable them out-right, but make it so that you can't play any champ in ranked until you have at least mastery level 1 on that champ.

Or better yet. If you buy a new champ, you must wait at least one week before using it on ranked. This prevents people from using not only recently released champions, but also old champions that they recently bought. It will not solve the problem of champions recently reworked, but is still something.

I have a friend who hit mastery 5 on like 4 different champions that he never even owned.

That is impossible. You can't have mastery 5 on a champion you don't own.

Spaceman5pff9 votes

lol yes you can, if they are in the free rotation you can play them. You can't get chests playing champions you don't own, however.

This

I didn't said that you can't earn champion mastery on non-owned champions. I said that the limit is 4 and to earn mastery 5 you must own the champion.

a week? no ,its to long.especially for the people who play alot lol.Like 6-7 games day.Mastery lvl 2 ,i think that would be enough.

Mastery level 2* mastery level 1 is too low. 16 mastery level 2 champs is the right amount for a player wanting to enter ranked.

(FYI you need to own 16 champs to enter in the first place hence why I said 16.

If you have a ban that game then ban the new champ. That's what most people do. I don't think that's a good solution to disable them. They want people to play there champions and the best way to learn a champ is to play them competitively. Yea it's probably a good idea to play a normal game or two but I don't really see this as a major problem. I see the solution as more of a problem than the actual problem.

You lose a valuable ban when doing this. A ban that you could otherwise use on an OP champion like Kindred or Zed or Ryze but you must instead waste it on the recently released champion just because there are people who simply cannot understand that you should not play a recently released champion on ranked.

Yeah, and the best way to learn poker is to bet $100 each hand as you're learning....

I'm not saying playing against Bots will get you anywhere, but one of the primary reasons Normals exists is to learn new champions. That distinction is why the Free Rotation is enabled for Normals and disabled for Ranked.

You're right, my LP is at least one fifty.

Feathermane3 votes

No. Most people who play new champs in ranked played them in PBE and crush people who don't know the new champ is even out. If you said they should be disabled because their balance state is unknown I might agree, but there is no way they should be disabled because you think their players are inexperienced. Going by that logic, why doesn't the game require at least a lvl 3 mastery of any champ before using them in ranked?

NineTailedMystic4 votes

So let PBE players continue to have an advantage by virtue of being a PBE tester?

Sypher The Poro1 votes

Most. That doesn't help the people that do exactly what OP is talking about.

I also refrain from playing ranked after a new champ is released for 2 reasons:

  1. Most people don't know how to play him and will feed horribly.
  2. Most people don't know how to play AGAINST him and so the few that did play him on PBE crush their lane.

I can't count on my teammates to play him correctly, and I can't count on my teammates to beat him.

Also, why should we allow the few people that made it on PBE to have an unfair advantage? Something tells me you have a PBE account.

Yes, let's pretend you can definitely count on your teammates to beat any other champion, and play any old champion perfectly.

ViiLLAiN2 votes

sooo just dont play ranked when new champs come out or ban them lol

Tsugaga2 votes

It's not a bad idea, and many would agree with you, however it would drastically reduce sales upon release. A better way to solve that would be to have x games played with a champ or have a certain mastery level.

Igotlazy2 votes

I would say 4 Days - 1 Week would be enough. While I think that people taking new champs into Ranked on release is a problem, I think the bigger issue is the potential bugs or strange interactions they can bring. There should be a bit of time where Riot can potentially hotfix massive bugs without them having an effect on Ranked play. Azir was probably the worst offender in recent years. Bugs included his soldiers not attacking, his Q doing no damage, his Ult breaking turret AI and many more.

TheGreatNinx2 votes

They should add what SMITE has. You can't play a New god in ranked (atleast the last time I played SMITE you couldn't) for about 3-5 days.

Occams Raiser2 votes

STOP PLAYING RANKED DURING NEW CHAMP WEEK!

Niyumi2 votes

You know, I play one game with a champ in norms, and then take them to ranked, and do fine. In the case of Sol, I think my first ranked game with him (jungle, after ONE GAME in norms) was ~12/3. Not everyone needs a whole lot of time practicing a champ to do well with them. :P

I come from MMOs, where you have 20-30+ abilities, CDs, mechanics, combos, synergies and all that. League, compared to that, is child's play. ^^

EROTIC RAID BOSS1 votes

I'd like to add that yasuo should be unplayable in ranked until you have at least a level 4 mastery with him

tbh I usually find it annoying when someone plays a champ they don't have at least level 4 with, says to me they just play whatever in ranked even if they aren't experienced with it at all

Elewd1 votes

i only have like 5 champs at rank 4 or higher and i play a plethora of different champs in rank, but i try to stay near champs with similar playstyles and similar concepts so its easy to adapt, i DO avoid champs i've never played ever tho. theres a lot of champs i played before the mastery system came out where im only at like rank 1 with them.

Elewd1 votes

i have the same "dont play ranked for 1-2 weeks" when a new champ or huge changes happen, and lets just say it was awful when riot released a new champ every 10 days.

i think riot needs to do 2 things to help fix some issues with champ releases. First off, a cooldown period that makes the new champion unavailable for ranked for 48 hours. nobody knows how to play as or against the new champ and causes ranked matches to be more luck based than people want them to be. the 2nd is a special event match where for during the 48 hours of the cooldown period theres a Que that is on the aram map and its just 5v5 of the new champ vs the new champ, everyone gets to play the new champ and try him/her/it out and there won't be as much dodging.

EcchiOtakuTM1 votes

No, champions should be disabled in rank unless you have them owned at rank 2 or higher. Minimal of 16 rank 2 champs to try ranked. (The amount of champs you must own to draft/ranked is 16 anyways)

Rank 2 mastery is not a lot to commit to especially since you want to rank but fully denying a champion from ranked.

mikemcparty1 votes

Right. As if it wasn't a big enough deterrent to new players to grind to level 30, buy all the runes, and have enough champions. I wouldn't be opposed to this, but with maybe 8 champions.

EcchiOtakuTM1 votes

You already need to own 16 champions to do draft in the first place it's just increasing it to rank 2 for ranked exclusively.

mikemcparty1 votes

Like I said before, players are already annoyed with the "grind games until you hit 30, then spend all your ip on runes, then spend all your ip on champs" approach. Last thing we need to add is a system that says, now you need to play 5 games with each of the 16 champions.

SSJTribe1 votes

The reason it's 16 champions is so you don't get banned out. If you were last pick, you have: the 3 bans from each side, then 9 players picking before you. Hypothetically you could not have a champion when it was your turn.

That said, I don't like the idea of mastery gating ranked either.

mikemcparty2 votes

I know the logic behind the 16 champions and I am totally fine with that as a requirement. I'm not even entirely opposed to mastery gating. I just think 16 champs at level 2 is excessive. 8 champs at mastery level 2 is totally fine and a lot more reasonable.

But for everyone that made an account after CM was introduced will have rank 2 on the champions they used during levelling. I'd be perfectly happy for them to gate ranked by mastery rank considering riot halved the exp to get to 30 and made the basic tier 3 runes cheap as chips.

If riot said at the end of this season 'From next season only champions you own with rank 2 mastery or above will be eligible for ranked.' This gives the whole preseason for people to get rank 2 (if you played before CM was introduced).

As to new champions. If you had pbe access then getting wins for a fast rank 2 shouldn't be a problem. If you didn't then it may take you longer, but you'll learn how the new champion works in the process.

mikemcparty1 votes

I agree with what you are saying. I don't want to be misunderstood. I am okay for the "you have to have mastery level 2 to play this champ in ranked" approach. I just don't think that you should be required to have 16 champs at mastery 2 before you can join ranked queue. I would like to see this...

You must have 16 champions unlocked AND have 8 of these champions at mastery level 2 before joining ranked queue. Additionally, you must have any additional champion at mastery rank 2 for this champ to be eligible in ranked queues.

Well it's not this idea alone I've been suggesting for months if they implemented the several new player ideas I listed it wouldn't be an issue at all.

I might have to update it a bit more though.

The numbers to look at are 1, 2, 4, 8, 22, 25, and 28

mikemcparty1 votes

Hey man, thanks for linking the post. Read through the ones you suggested, as well as some others and all of the ideas sound wonderful. Unfortunately, it seems as the post has become somewhat buried in all the useless shit that others post. I would try reposting to get some more additional feedback. I think you and I are on the same page with a lot of these things.

Good luck!

EcchiOtakuTM1 votes

Yea I will soon after next patch then I'll update it again. Been having a lot of fun since turrets were finnally fixed and games felt normal again.

Hollowchazz1 votes

the problem with that is when your lv2 champ gets picked/banned and you cant pick a lv1 champ so you are forced to pick your lv2 teemo jungle and lose the game

EcchiOtakuTM1 votes

Hence why there's a minimal 16 rank 2 champ requirement -_-

It's not like draft/ranked doesn't already have a 16 champ minimal requirement to enter anyways it'll make it so players have to play normal games before jumping straight into rank. This is also better than fully disabling a new champ from being pickable in ranked, Plus it'll increase the trust between teammates since you can't just buy and play a champ but get to know the champ before jumping into ranked.

And mastery rank 2 is nothing hard to get I have several mastery 5 champs and mastery 2 is nothing if it was mastery 3+ then it'd be tedious but mastery 2 is just a few games.

So there are no issues of someone getting banned out due to the amount of champions needed in the first place. No issue of new comers not being able to transition since 16 mastery 2 champs isn't hard to do. A great plus of more trust since you'll feel that your teammates did play the champ before entering the ranked game. And it's a better soft ban on new champs/buy and play than outright disabling them.

Dear summoners, We are sorry to inform you, but due to "technical difficulties" this feature cannot be implemented. If you would like to have new champions disabled from competitive games, please join LCS (Or LCK, of the other variants).

Signed: Riot Games~

mikemcparty1 votes

They aren't disabled... Competitive play is one patch behind, so technically the champions haven't been released yet. There is a difference.

Serika Zero1 votes

not always, often lcs games are being played when champions are released. And the casters announce the viewers, several times, that champion X is not available. New champions are disabled from competitive for like 2 weeks or 4, i don't remember
