Even with the PBE buff, is there any reason to pick Stormraider's Surge over Thunderlord's Decree?

Most assassins already have an escape. You could use it on burst mages which lack an actual escape, but wouldn't they still prefer Thunderlord's Decree to ensure that the target will not have a chance to live?

I think stormriders might be a decent pickup on immobile mages in some match ups. Also use it on Hecarim.

Stormraider's surge is so good on Veigar. Gotta go fast!

But Viegar can abuse any AP ratio so heavily that deathfire and thunderlord's are always a better pick.

Although true, I get much better results myself with stormraiders on veig. Kill the ap carry, run fast cause you have your main cc and damage on cooldown, reposition, hold your ground until your ult comes up, repeat on the next squishy. As veig, you're job is to control the lane and set up combos, which makes you a priority target. The way out is far better in my opinion over more damage.

Thunderlord's is solid because of the flat-damage it does per level, not it's scaling. The AD/AP scaling on it is actually horrendous for something you can only use once every 20 seconds.

I could definitely see it being used on someone like rengar or talon who don't really have any escapes after they kill someone. Especially now that stormraiders is giving that 100% reduced slows as well.

The Mom1 votes

They nerfed it down to 75% reduction.

Thanks for the correction!

stromrager is meant for talon, maybe rengar or khazix who dont have any "one button escape" like zed and lb. they need the extra mobility to stay alive and wait for ability cd.

charcharmunro2 votes

Kha'Zix DOES have an escape but it's also his initiation and he needs to get the reset to really use it.

magic pole2 votes

yeah it really sounds perfect on talon

The Deckowner2 votes

they even have talon's picture as the icon.

Not every assassin has an escape and it's also good for people with initial burst that want to stick to targets to actually finish them. Stormraider's will be a much bigger help for people like Evelynn and Master Yi in killing people than Thunderlord's, and while people like Zed can get away without it, people like Talon and Diana aren't so lucky.

Athenes Lulu2 votes

Some assassins RUN to escape, so Stormraider's is a good utility buff.

I mean, thunderlord's damage is SHIT unless you manage to actually scale.

The Yetii Rider2 votes

It's to avoid being kited. I don't understand why people don't get this. Assassins can be peeled, it's one of their biggest weaknesses. Things like Kalista ult, Sivir ult, Ashe arrow can give the carry just enough breathing room to kite you to oblivion.

As for Thunderlords, assassins SHOULD have enough damage in their kits to get kills, that's the point of assassins. Thunderlords is for poke supports.

The reason assassins can't get kills is the removal of Brutalizer and the changes to Last Whisper. Honestly Riot just needs to rework the entire armor system, as it stands they already removed it from minions monsters and towers because it makes damage clunky and unpredictable.

There's a big difference between almost getting the kill and getting the kill though. A lot of time trying to chase down that 50 hp guy with your movement buff isn't going to work anyway because you'd have to run into a turret or fog of war that might have more enemy champions in it. Or they flash a wall and movespeed is useless. Thunderlord's gives you more damage NOW for doing the combo you were going to do anyway.

That damage is magic damage, if you are an AD assassin you SHOULD be uninterested in small bursts of magic damage. Thunderlords is just stronger than Stormraider's atm, once the buffs come you'll see the strength.

Thunderlord's Decree scales better with AD than AP despite being magic damage. Also, an AD assassin should be targeting the squishies, which usually have little to no magic resistance.

Champions with decent up front burst that have trouble sticking long enough for a kill will love it. I imagine it would be pretty good on champions like Kayle Nasus Darius Irelia Aatrox.

MunchCrunchLunch2 votes

it could be used on talon. no actually. YOU SHOULD ALWAYS BUY IT FOR TALON. when you ult. simply the movement boost you get is not enough. especially when you use your ult as an escape.

'Ensuring a target doesn't have a chance to live' is a pretty big exaggeration of what Thunderlord's actually does. It increases your burst by a nominal amount, nothing more.

If people fail to see the use of a huge movespeed buff versus a little damage proc every 20 seconds, then they can feel free to keep on taking Thunderlord's on every champion they play because "it's damage" and keep on being oblivious. I guarantee you 99% of people who complain about Stormraider's had only used it in three or four games before coming to the conclusion that "it's useless". It is a great pick on burst Champs in need of an escape tool.

Current Stormraider is inferior to Thunderlord's Decree.

New Stormraider may have a lot of uses over Thunderlord's Decree, however. It can be a great pick against Ashe for example, since her slows are annoying.

I see no mention of GottaGoFastPlank Gangplank in this comment section. This will be very entertaining considering how he has bad synergy with other keystone masteries aside from Thunderlords, which he can't proc without a barrel or close-proximity trade.

I mean he's already super fast but you're not going fast enough unless you can surpass the speed of light and defy all laws of physics and bear witness to unforeseen consequences humanity is not ready to unearth. Using this in conjunction with Youmuus, Phage and MoveReallyFastBoots will break the boundaries of human knowledge, unleashing forth the Dark Ones_Cthulhu fhtagn r'lyeh wgah nagl_

EndlessSorcerer1 votes

Hecarim gets decent use out of it since he's pretty much all about bursting squishies and he doesn't synergize too well with other masteries (he's not bad with Thunderlords, but few are).

I really have to test it on Fiddlesticks.

I forget how quickly his damage applies (it's been a while since I played him), but it may be useful for sticking to the target.

Would work well on Diana and Talon, yes.

Stormraider's Surge will synergize with champions who take/like Ghost. Let's compare them for a second...

Ghost: You ignore unit collision and move 27% faster for 10 seconds (210 second cooldown). Stormraider's Surge: Dealing 30% of a champion's max Health within 2.5 seconds grants you 40% movespeed and 75% slow resistance for 3 seconds (10 second cooldown).

Ghost pros: 7 additional seconds duration, ignore unit collision, can be used to engage. Stormraider's Surge pros: 13% additional movespeed, slow resistance, 200 seconds LESS cooldown.

Comparing these numbers, the following champions may prefer the new Stormraider's over Thunderlord's: Darius Diana Evelynn Hecarim Jax Nasus Nocturne Shyvana Skarner Talon Tryndamere Udyr

Actually, on someone like Ryze, it would be insanely strong. You're W is literally just a little bit more than AA range, so if you have that speed, you can keep spamming bindings like no tomorrow when you trigger the passive. And on top of that, if you get your ult, they can't run from you. Ryze already does enough burst anyway to easily proc the speed, and while stacking on top of his ult speed, you are literally Sonic the Hedgehog. And why would you even take Thunderlords anyway when Ryze doesn't build enough AP for it to efficiently scale?

At max rank of Overload, your passive lasts for 5 seconds (spell spamming mode, not charge-gaining time) and your ult always lasts for 6 seconds no matter what rank the ability itself is. Stormraider's lasts for 3 seconds once you deal enough damage within the 2.5 seconds (post-buff time limit) and has a 10 second CD once you proc the speed (I think). So If you ult and get your passive off at the same time while also activating the move-speed, you should have maybe a 5-6 second window until you can activate Stormraider's again. And since you're passive stacks last for 5 seconds, and with 45% CDR, your is on a 2.5 second CD, you should be able to instantly get your passive off after an Ult+W+E+Q+Q rotation and at the same time trigger Stormraider's. I always knew that keystone would be hella broken on Ryze but now it's really going to be disgusting.
