Here's how I feel about Kha'Zix (Long thread ahead)

Kha'Zix for the most part is a pretty damn unique champ. His evolution mechanic separating him from most of the other champs. This is a champ with clearly defined weaknesses and strengths and is pretty balanced around knowing the champ.

  • To start with his playstyle. He revolves around managing one mechanic and is extremely core to him. Isolation. This is for the most part what keeps him from spiraling out of control and gives him immense strength over other champs. His one job as an assassin is to find lone targets and pick them off before leaping to safety. His playstyle is based on priorities and sharp thinking. Priorities comes in as "Who is the farthest from the group?" "Who can get back to the group slowest if I leap on them?" "What's in the immediate area that could hinder my performance?" Kha'Zix's isolation mechanic forces him to make quick decisions and prioritize certain things over the other. It's even something like a minion wave or a lone minion. Do you risk letting the minions slip by and possibly ruining a kill or do you prioritize killing minions with aoe damage above all else? Little things easily slip by and if you are unaware, you just set yourself up to be killed. To go into his abilities:

  • Passive: This ability grants Kha'Zix bonus magic damage on his next basic attack and applies a slow when he's not visible to the enemy team. This ability scaling off AP keeps it nicely in check and grants the ability for Kha'Zix to see if something is warded if his passive does no reactivate upon supposedly being outside of enemy sight.

  • Q: Taste Their Fear is Kha's core ability to his gameplay. This skill is balanced around isolation. Many suggest him getting an even lower isolation radius to work with despite the buff he just got to it. The recent thread brought up some points about maybe having his ult evolved remove what makes this ability so balanced in the first place. It suggested giving him reliable ways to achieve his full Q damage such as by removing isolation being affected by minions and turrets. The problem I saw with this is it setting Kha up for nerfs. It's an ability that hits up to 1k+ of damage through the raw amount of scaling it has while also being on extremely low cooldowns and on a low mana cost. And for a champ that likes to have armor pen and cdr in his build this could be extremely problematic. Letting Kha reliably get his full Q damage in any situation other than the target being isolated would just break him. This ability is usually evolved at level 6 or 11. His leap being the other ability to contest in its strength.

  • W: Void Spikes is a straightforward ability. It's a small aoe projectile that applies a slow and heals Kha if he's in the radius of the explosion. This ability recently got a buff and I've noticed it right off the bat, giving a very decent amount of sustain. With the right leash and kiting it's possible to come out of the jungle with near full hp and one pot still available. Evolving this ability is entirely up to the player. It grants an extremely good amount of utility in Kha's case. This gives him decent wave clear since the single projectile is now split into three. And together with hydra allows you to sweep a wave with just these two abilities alone. Such an ability is very nice to have when minions can make or break an attempt to kill a target and one of the main reasons I feel was put in. It also increases the potency of the slow and allows you to hit at least three separate enemies not including the AOE from it and also allows you to not face check brushes anymore when doing some scouting or warding. This ability is left up to the ability of the Kha'Zix player and how confident they are in their wave clear and cunning to get away from enemy champs. The same recent thread had also noted about maybe buffing it to give a damage amplifier to the target. I feel it's a nice idea, but it also notes getting rid of the three way cone and pushing it back to a single projectile. This almost entirely gets rid of Kha's wave clear potential with the ability and with that reduces how much he can clear a wave to get his target isolated. This ability is usually evolved at level 16 versus his ult evolution.

  • E: Leap is again very straightforward. It's a shortrange jump with a weak scaling AOE damage upon landing. It's either your gap closer or your escape. Not much to say. When evolved it increases the jump's distance by a really good amount and allows a reset upon kill. This is Kha's second read and butter ability and is usually evolved at level 6 or 11 due to how much safety it gives him and has the strength to keep him alive in a fight upon getting the reset. Evolving at level 6 is entirely up to the confidence and familiarity of the champ with the Kha'Zix player.

  • R: Void Assault these days is argued amongst several people that it is useless since its damage reduction removal upon evolution. I was not there when the ability was like this so I can't say much about it. Only that I've heard it's a lot healthier since it was removed. Supposedly this ability was turned to utter garbage when evolved. To start, it already gives Kha'Zix movespeed and grants stealth for 1 second and can be cast twice in a 2 second wait in etween casts. This already nicely gives Kha'Zix the ability to juke his opponents and avoid attacks. It's other biggest pro is that it allows Kha'Zix a period to regain his cooldowns and avoid damage. Despite the delay of two seconds between casts, it's still 1 more second you didn't have of safety. This ability only gets better when evolved. It can be cast a total of three times and he is allowed two seconds of stealth! This is such a generous safety window for Kha'Zix. Two seconds of stealth just can really change a game and has saved my ass on numerous occasions when opponents attempt to fight me in the brush. I can quickly blow my abilities and juke around them and use that time to quickly find a safer spot to wait the 2 second delay for the next charge. Giving you more opportunities. Such an ability also helps in avoiding damage when you get CC'd. Merc Treads on Kha against a morgana snare? Just go invisible for the duration of it. (Though you can also try praying the enemy doesn't have a pink ward available.)

  • My point for making this? I felt that lots of people suggest tons of things for this champ. I'm not that good at explanations, and I'm probably being an ass to say this, but I also don't think some of these people even spend enough time learning Kha'Zix to warrant calling for buffs on him. I find this champ extremely balanced and shines for the players that actually learned him enough. I also don't feel you can say any of his abilities are bad. They all play an extremely important role in keeping Kha'Zix either doing damage or keeping him safe to hunt down more champs. I also honestly don't expect any good reception of this as I said before I'm bad at explanations and am also just a simple unranked plebeian.

I will admit I didnt read the majority of this, but I have something to say. Kha and rengar build as a sort of AD fighter off tank. But for some reason they have the capacity to do well over 2k damage in less than 1 second........ They need to transition to either glass cannons with max skill caps (You succeed, or pay with your life.) Or simply turn into tanky fighters.

I'm not sure if tanky fighter was a common thing on Kha back then, but to me it's wasting the scaling on him to go off tank. Especially since he has a reliable way to get out of an engage as opposed to rengar. Rengar even has an as boost to encourage him to stay and AA champs. Kha'Zix is way more assassin-like than rengar.

Kha'Zix used to be better as an off-tank and sometimes even as a full tank, back when he had:

  1. Damage reduction on his ult
  2. Higher base damages
  3. His Q could deal damage based on the enemy's missing health

Those attributes allowed him to build tanky and still do relevant damage. He also had the option to go glass cannon and burst down anyone very quickly, but his tanky build was deemed too powerful, and he was nerfed in a way that he is now forced to go full damage to actually be useful.

You can build one or two tanky items on him but you can't build him like an actual bruiser as before. That said, thanks to recent Black Cleaver changes, you can build it, Randuin, and Maw of Malmortius, and still be tanky enough to survive the initial burst and kill an enemy. Your other two items must be damage oriented, however, I like to go for Ravenous Hydra and Last Whisper.

That said, the idea of making Rengar more of a bruiser and making Kha more of an assassin is very good to allow people to better separate one from another and allowing to differentiate both. Rengar already doesn't have any escape potential so allowing him to build tanky is a very attractive premise. Although Riot would have to make some changes to Rengar to reduce his damage and assassination potential.

Well that's interesting. Was it hotfixed or sleeper unbalanced for a while until one day someone played him that way?

I often like to go for full AD assassin Kha myself if I've gotten myself ridiculously fed. Though otherwise I'll have about one defense item.

I don't remember very well since I was silver at that time and I wasn't very experienced or interested in watching competitive battles. However I remember that after some nerfs Kha was considered to be somewhat balanced (borderline OP) until someone played him as a half-tank in an LCS/LCK battle and people discovered that building him tanky was better than building him full damage, then he was nerfed again.

Well at least he got two notable buffs that really helped him out right now. He's balanced, but I can't say he's a top tier pick. Just because other assassins don't take quite as much decision making and have immediate damage.
