Solo queue needs to be fixed, skill discrepancies are getting out of hand

Yenn··101 votes·6,837 views

I'm pretty much unable to do anything to win games, because it's so heavily team dependent, and teams are not dependable.

This game, for example, was thrown by my team mates at least seven different times. I was literally the only reason they were relevant, because they were all playing like shit; bottom lost, top went even, and the jungle was mechanically retarded. I was roaming at level 4 as Vel'koz, just to prevent bottom lane from feeding too hard.

There were at least four different points where we could have ended, but my team refused to do so, and instead tried to dive their nexus turret/fountain for kills. The enemy team even knew they shouldn't have won, and said so in chat.

Even worse, I knew this game was very likely going to be a loss while I was 10-1-5, because my team mates were playing so poorly. There's nothing fun about outplaying the entire fucking enemy team, and knowing that you're not going to be rewarded in any way, and still going to lose to something completely out of your control. There isn't even a 'what can I take away from this loss,' it's just a complete fucking waste of time with zero value.

https://i.imgur.com/ObDbVtl.jpg

This has happened to me in my last four consecutive games. It's reaching a point where no matter how well I play, the entirety of the game is reliant on whether my team mates are dysfunctional monkeys. We may as well be flipping coins.

I've been Diamond I in three consecutive seasons, and now I'm just floating between Platinum III and Platinum I because I have zero impact over whether I win or lose. I'm statistically more likely to win games because I reduce the number of potential handicaps on my team to 4, while the enemy team potentially has 5, but this only works out over thousands of games.

Something needs to be done to normalize skill levels in ranked, because there is currently zero reward for consistently playing well. The idea that the unskilled players will just 'fall to where they belong' is wrong and not working, especially with the current state of the game.

EDIT: I just had 4 games in a row like this, where I dominate and carry my team in the early game, but I know it's going to be a loss because they're all playing horribly. https://i.imgur.com/XVp9rc0.jpg

It wouldn't even be that much of a problem if we just had MMR and no divisions IMO.

Why should someone in gold 3 have a gold 1 MMR and be stuck at gold 3 because he has to win against gold 1s to climb to gold 2?

lp3x2 votes

There is a massive flaw in this, what if a plat 1 and gold v duo?

Lauchmelder4 votes

Should be made impossible

Kaeblen2 votes

it currently is impossible. you have to be within 2 ranks of eachother.

Lauchmelder5 votes

Only in high elo.

I can duo with a Bronze 5 even though I'm in my gold promos.

Kaeblen1 votes

no wonder bronze is elo-hell. that must wreak havoc on matchmaking.

Lauchmelder5 votes

To be honest bronze is fairly easy to get out of if you grind it out as long as you actually are better than bronze.

The main problem in bronze are trolls/greedy plays and a lack of game knowledge. Duo boosters aren't that big of a thing.

It's not just bronze though. Just check out the matchmaking I got for my first promo game: https://i.gyazo.com/12e27d3f7d381bd2fb3c041d49c842dc.png

I have to compete in the gold 2 - gold 3 ELO range as the proof that I belong into gold 5.

Morticianjohn1 votes

the gap in skill between duo partners makes bronze pretty volatile at times, however, I think that more commonly what happens in bronze is higher elo players like silver-platinum players hopping on a bronze account so they can feel good about themselves.

Mostly Golds carrying Bronzes out of Gold. I've done it several times on alt accounts with the payment just being a skin if they get out lol.

You get more LP if you have higher MMR, so you'll climb even if you're only winning 50% of the time.

Lauchmelder3 votes

Yes and no.

You get more LP but it means nothing if you get unlucky in your promo games.

this game isn't about how good you are. its whether match making wants you to win or not. when 40% of my games are unwinnable there is a problem.

that's literally the entire point of the matchmaking system. It tries to make you reach a 50% winrate. If you improve, you will climb. How do people not understand this simple concept? You are not meant to win every game, not every game is winnable, even challenger KR smurfs lose sometimes to monkey team, it's unavoidable

This is not the system players want. We don't want to lose because of some dumbass that keeps screwing up, and to top it off we get penalized 100% because of that idiot. If soloQ rewarded you based on your own actions, then we can talk about this MMR system being fair, but as of now you either lose or win based on RNG matchmaking.

This is a 5v5 team game. Go play chess or starcraft if you want a MMR rating based entirely on your own skill. There are far, far, far more aspects to winning a game of league of legends than individual skill, because it is a team game. The fact that I have to explain this to you tells me you don't really understand the point.

We are here to play solo queue. Like it or not there's no solo rewards in this shit, and we have seen the disaster of making League team focused with dynamic queue. I honestly don't care if you think this is a teamgame or not, the fact is that you're dependant on your teammates to increase your rating. Teamgames is when you gather together as a team to try and win, this has nothing to do with being a teamplayer other than hoping your teammates know how to do their stuff correctly. It has nothing to do with your performance and that's dissapointing since we're in a >>>>solo queue<<<< environment.

Adding any type of factor to determine your ranking besides WINNING and LOSING means that your objective as a player shifts from WINNING to MAXIMIZING MY PERFORMANCE.

This means you will have players for who winning will be a secondary objective and will instead try to maximize KDA and CS and so on, at the expense of their own team. That is so far from the actual objective of the game itself that you might as well play something else. Go play CoD or Halo if that's what you want.

You can be a 20 0 0 master Yi who runs around and kills people then farms jungle and be a complete nuisance to your own team and cause a loss, same as you can be a 0 10 7 Alistar who did one amazing engage at the end of the game and won.

It's absolutely mad to determine your performance based on anything but a victory and a defeat when the only stated objective of a game of league of legends is WINNING. If you want to climb in rank, do everything in your power to WIN THE GAME.

This includes dodging obvious trolls in champ select, tryharding in 5 to 20 score games that you have a 5% chance of winning, defusing situations where your team starts flaming eachother, shotcalling.. Notice none of those things are reflected in any analysable metric and yet can still make you win the game.

"Solo queue" meaning you're queueing up as a solo player, into a team of 4 people against other 5 people... I am baffled that i even have to type this out. League has worked with this concept of you being put into a team of 4 other solo players for 8 years already.

As the guy before me said, play chess or starcraft that actually offers you a 1v1 environment and a queue system that reflects it. League isn't, and never was this type of a game. Your success is your own but it's also dependent on your own teammates because you can't win a game 1v5.

You're missing the point. If I'm at Platinum II and my team mates are significantly less skilled than I am, there's a problem and something isn't working.

In this example game, our Draven, Heimer, and Lee Sin were far below Janna and I's level. The enemy Veigar and Blitzcrank were also very unskilled, but it didn't matter much, because Blitzcrank only had to tank my damage and late game Veigar can just one shot anything that gets near him. Had even one other player on my team been at an appropriate skill level, we could have closed out the game.

It's fine for it to be a team game, but if it's going to be that way, skill needs to be consistent at every level. Which it's not. And that needs to be fixed.

Elikain2 votes

As i've understood, Blitz and Veigar are "brain dead" champs, according to your description. Perhaps people who think are out of their league should play champions that don't require a lot of skill to play as. But then again, that would require of you to choose champions for them. You can only influence your choices, you cannot influence the choices of your teammates.

In any case, even if you get stuck in a losing streak loop, there's statistical improbability that you're doing so with the same teammates. Sometimes it is possible to encounter some people again (if you queue up immediately again) but in the end of the day, your losses are really your own. Thinking that you're the only guy who is supposed to be where you currently are and that the rest of randoms are just boosted monkeys, is unlikely.

If you were really just there along for the ride, you would be lower than you'd think you deserve to be and would never make the climb any higher. Or the likely scenario is that just like you, people play tilted and with their head in the clouds which leads to poor gameplay and losses from mistakes that could've been prevented.

Ultimately, the win is always more likely for a team that makes less mistakes and exploits the mistakes of the other team. Likewise, it's still a possibility that you make no mistakes that you think are relevant (from your own perspective) but still make a mistake for making this assumption and lose the game because of it.

Thankyou for completely ignoring the point.

a fair system does not match a professional athlete with little-league players. Not on their team, nor as their opponent. You need to match professionals with professionals. Match novices with novices.

Anything else is insanity. Right now we have insanity.

Elikain2 votes

We don't have insanity. We only have people who believe they're better then they actually are and always say "i get matched with shit tier players and am always losing games".

Your ELO is matching you with players with your similar ELO, which is the "professional VS professional" system you're talking about. As i've said before, don't think that losing streaks happen because people you play with are just below the bar you consider yourself over. Sometimes this is the case but most of the times, it's just a player error.

The point is that no one seems to differentiate between these circumstances or they simply chose to ignore it, trying to inflate their own egos of being deservant of higher ratings but oh gosh darn it, they're being held back by their teammates.

People make mistakes, even stupid ones. No one is above them. No matter how much of a professional you consider yourself to be, making a slight mistake at your high ELO can be your undoing even if that mistake wouldn't even register in lower ELO. Higher ranks mean higher standards of gameplay. And it doesn't matter if you're truly in high ELO or not, as long as the ELO you're in is the absolute highest you've managed to achieve to date. The point of the matchmaking system is to challenge your skill constantly, not have you climb up hill with no obstacles along the way.

Preeeeeeetty sure his screenshot proves that they're either trolling or can't play at the MMR. There's a difference between climbing and learning how to get carried.

Morendabanus2 votes

It's a 5v5 team game, but they removed solo carrying and didn't deal with the fact that you still get people who tilt hard and feed hard. Solo carrying in the golden days of season 2 and season 4 balanced out, you could pick a feast/famine champion and if you deserved to win, you bloody well would.

Sure yasuo was bonkers, and kass too, but in general most players had tons more agency to do stuff solo. Tanks couldn't 1v1 every other class in the game either.

because its the way the match making works thats the problem. The match making creates games with the intention that x teams is losing. Likewise it creates games with the intention that y team is winning. You have to go like 20-1-17 just to be in those games and you are still probably going to lose.

And what we want is for the match making to create games with the intention of making the game fair. Not oh look you won 3 games in a row time to make this match against you to normalize your winrates.

It creates a game with as even a skill matchup as it can, which then leads to either team winnin the game roughly 50-50. Of course smurfs, elo boosters mess with this, in fact those are what you should be complaining about not "shitty teammates" You probably get carried a lot by smurfs and elo boosters too, but you don't notice this, yet when your team gets crushed by one you do. Excuse me,but i lost a quite amount of games in a row and got demoted from Gold V to Silver 1(though i managed to get promoted again) from monkeys that went afk,or refused to pick a decent suppor.Instead we had a riven support who would refuse even to buy a support's item for gold or even guys who would steal other people's lanes while flaming.Where is the elo boosting in my case or the smurf player?

Instead i managed to win games later on when sometimes one from my team would try to ruin us.Like a Xerath that would spam his ultimate from base or run to the enemy to die and try to tilt us.The rest of my recent wins were indeed 50-50 to win.

I see no even matchup here, nore i could see until 6-7 months ago when i went away for my summer season at work.I agree with the other guys that personal performance should be rewarded at least a bit.

And I guarantee you I wouldn't have been demoted from gold 5 to silver 1 in those games if I was playing instead, which means some of those would have been winnable if you played better

back in season 3 I was in gold 2 at some point and went on an 11 game losing streak which left me in gold 4, I almost wanted to quit ranked. But then I went something like 19 and 2 in the following games and shot right up to diamond. There's a lot of variance but you have to realise you have an impact on every game you play even if it's minor. Deciding to go mid instead of bot at 15 minutes can win you a teamfight, or it can make you waste 300 gold and some xp for no reason. There are so many things you (as a gold 5? player) can improve on, that whining about matchmaking seems like a lazy way out.

The main issue is that some ppl have the mmr of let's say gold 5 while they're in silver 3 or something. Yet they have to get to 100 LP and win 3/5 series while playing against ppl who are gold. personally as silver 4 i've been matched against silver 1/gold 5 before luckily not too much but i barely play ranked.

If MMR was all we had then i could understand the system.

I understand that you gain more lp for winning against higher ranked players but when i go on a 7 game winning streak just to lose the next 7, that doesn't help me at all.

My MMR is fucked and i play with plat 1/2 as dia okay fine i guess i understand losing 22lp and winning 16. Then i play with "high" lp D5 and D4s like what my mmr should be and i still win 14 and lose 22 xDDDD. Not to talk about all the boosted accounts noone cares about at rito. I'll be back where i belong sure but it's going to be one hell of an annoying grind. Currently smurfing a lot with a low elo friend of mine in gold and holy shit is it hard to carry. Idk what it is but i understand as duo we get better opponnents but playing against a full plat 4 team when my team is gold 5-gold 3 is a bit big of a difference.

Another game where I'm carrying my team and we're up over 10k gold and all objectives at 15 minutes, but I still know we're likely going to lose because I lost the lottery and my team is full of monkeys, and instead of closing out the game, they'd rather dive from the enemy's inhibitor turret to their nexus to kill the fucking support.

This might be fine if everyone were a retarded monkey, but more often than not, it's only 2-3 players in any given game that are retarded monkeys.

I feel really fucking rewarded for consistently playing well.

I feel you 100% i have lost soo many games because match making decided that i should lose before it even starts.

you carry the game bot lane hard feeds Vayne or something stupid like twitch or good old fashion hard fed Darius is always fun and unkillable too.

thing is once they start feeding the jungler will camp that lane and gets fed too or your lane you won gets free fed from people doing dumb stuff and ends up being right back in the game. This does not even include the autofill people or support veigar-lux-teemos. had a team feed an adc ryze one time like how?

and it would be one thing if i was like 1 bad game every so often but its often a chain of bad games like 5 in a row where your team is lower mmr than theirs or something and hard feeds it gets old fast.

this sums up everything really.

the system as it is now WILL make you climb.. but it wont get you to where u belong in any decent amount of time.

it shouldn't take 500 games in a season for me to be the statically change that carried my games because im 1 player out of 10. they need to grade MY SCORE and how well I DID and not where or not matchmaking RNG favored my that game.

i don't HAVE that kind of free time

some of have a job.. some of us have a wife and kids, we cant "play league nonstop" if you put faker in bronze 5... he still wouldn't be able to climb to challenger in only 50 games. it doesn't work that way. you NEED to be able to play CONSTANTLY to climb.

i have climbed out of bronze FOUR TIMES, but i have never had the patience required to sit i ranked games in silver to actually grind through the completely random losses i get because riot decides that "silver is the baseline for new players" and w/e team gets the lvl 30 instantly loses before anyone even picks their champions.

in about 50% of my games i am the best player on EITHER team. and i don't say this to sound cocky. its because I'm being put with BAD players. and im not talking a small skill difference here... im talking i am a 2/4/13 support Morgana and i 1v1 and kill thier 9/0/2Syndra kill. and im like.. this guys is HORRIBLE, he misses half his abilities. how the heck did he even GET 9 kills

i think he would have a very high chance of doing that, but even then. he would prob skip a few divisions and maybe get to silver at 25 games. or so.

keep in mind i won 16 games in a row myself to bring my from bronze 2 to silver 5

but that that point he is silver. he will prbaly make it to gold in idk lets say 20 more games

and maybe up to mid gold by the time he reaches 50.

but this is faker.. the undisputed best player that has ever played the game.

if you ACTUALLY gold your going to climed to gold from silver MUCH slower as you may win only 55% of your games.

if you take a gold player and put then in low bronze.. the probably wont reach gold until about 500-800 games. thats the issue. people dont have TIME to do that.

i dont want to spend the ENTIRE season just getting to where i can finally find a game with people my own skill level

i want to get to a place where i can play people my own skill in maybe one month and then have fun even matches and learn how to play better.

i have no doubt in my mind i have the skill of a gold. but i dont have TIME to climb.

at the start of the season i was playing on the east costs with 32 ping no lag and a perfect connection and i had MUCH more free time to play league i climbed VERY fast

but starting February, i had to drive cross country back to CA, then my computer got freined and i had to rebuild it. and my internet is so bad here that i literally have to pay $10 a month to even PLAY the game. and i still don't feel comfortable enough to play a ranked games with current stability of my internet.

On my main account I feel the pain and I'm only bronze 5. I know its not silver or gold or even Diamond. However, I've tried to play decently okayPoppy ,Jax ,Tryndamere champs and I take the time to learn the game and the mechanics. The fact that all I wanted was the at least climb out of bronze 5 - 4 before the season ends I ended up in my promos three times. We all get that free win once you hit your promos twice and every time i get there the games are thrown hard solely based on kill hungry people that claim they want to climb but don't play for the objectives once ahead. Such as, free dragon, free rift, free baron, free towers, and such. I know we all know that feeling when you're even in lane or even winning and you get flamed because your not godlike and cant carry. Your team continues to act like monkeys flaming you and your sitting there at the keyboard like...."what is this hell?....why me...why?". The fact that the game is made to make you lose consistently is endlessly tilting. I know you guys explained that its a teamgame and that's how you win. But like people said its solo queue and you are on your own realistically. A lot of the time it makes you want to KYS(figuratively speaking) and that's not okay. That's my two cents hopefully it was worth something.

You are 1/5th of your team, or 20%. That means that in a mere 20% of games, you will win or lose because of the actions you took, regardless of what your team did.

The other four players are 80% of the team. About half of the time, they're going to carry you, no matter how well or how poorly you do as an individual. The other half of the time, they're going to drag you down into a loss, no matter how well or poorly you played.

Don't sweat the 80%. You don't control that. Sometimes the 80% will work in your favor and get you a win. Sometimes it won't.

Just concern yourself with your own 20% that you can control. Stay calm. Play your best. Encourage your teammates. Keep spirits high. Make effective use of smart pings. So why does everyone get ranked based on their team when we "shouldn't worry about that 80%"

We literally have to worry about the 80% because that, for some ungodly reason, determines our skill. It's a garbage system. We HAVE to play on teams, HAVE to carry or lose, then the ranking system punishes/rewards us for that 80%. People wouldn't be so pissed about their team being garbage if their teammates didn't control their rank so damn much.

People always claim "it's a team game" but individually rank each other based on "team games"? What kind of f-cked up logic is that?? Then people blame the one stuck with those shit teams saying "if you can't carry you deserve to stay low", WITH A TEAM GAME.

Here is an idea. Change the "solo rank" to "teammate rank". That removes the idea that you alone are responsible for your ranking up via 1v1 in your lane. How do you rank as a teammate in a 5v5 game? Not how do you rank individually in a 5 man team. Since you cannot rank up by performing well individually (your TEAM has to win the game, not you winning your lane 1v1) it should be reflected as such. It is very misleading to suggest a player is really good or really bad by himself when all he ever does is play on a TEAM.

i think that if nothing else your letter rank should be taken heavily into account for your LP gain/loss. if you get an S+ and lose at the very least you shouldnt lose any LP and if you get the lowest letter score (idk what that is) and win you shouldnt be given much LP. only flaw i can see with that is how some times that could make it hard for support mains to climb if they dont so much get assists as they do just save peoples butts and similar things that the letter scoring system cant currently factor in

its close to the end of the season. A lot of people who have quit or taken a brake for a while are all coming back for end of season rewards and because of worlds. Not that people don't normally comeback after a while but worlds and end of season attracts a lot of people. A lot of my lost games have people who havent played for two months and are playing there secondary or fill role on a champion they've never played. Then there's the people who are desperate to get higher rank before the end of season and get angry easier and then people get tilted of this stuff and it becomes even worse.

Hell I played with a master tier smurf in one of my games a few days ago and looked at his op.gg and in his past 20 games he had 55% winrate and this is in plat5
