I was blasé about the upcoming Amumu buffs.

Current Amumu reduces the MR of the targets of his autoattacks by 15/20/25 for 3 seconds. The Amumu showing up on PBE inflicts a debuff which inflicts an extra 15% of magic damage that champion takes as true damage. These are basically functionally identical, I thought.

Then I did the math.

All champions begin with either 30 or 32.1 MR. Those who begin with 30 MR do not have it scale. Those who begin with 32.1 have it scale to 53.4 at level 18.

This is not actually representative of the game in actuality, as flat MR glyphs are more-or-less ubiquitous. At 9x1.34, this is 12.06 additional MR almost every champion begins the game with. Therefore, it can be said that the average champion will begin the game with 42.06 or 44.16 MR, with those who have scaling MR going to 65.46 at level 18.

Now would be an appropriate time for the introduction of the formula for MR's damage reduction.

Damage Reduction=MR/(100+MR)

At level 1, this means that every champion in the game is taking ~30% less magic damage. For those who scale, they take ~40% less magic damage at level 18.

Which brings us to our first testable. Amumu's old passive at level 1 versus his new passive.

42.06-15=27.06. Plug this into the MR formula, and that gives you ~21% reduced magic damage, for a total of a ~9% increase in magic damage.

Obviously, Mumu's new passive outstrips that by far.

For melee champion MR, the calculation is similar. Blah blah 44.16-15=29.16 and plugged into MR that's ~22.5% reduced magic damage, for a grand total of an 8% increase.

The conclusion speaks for itself, so it's off to the opposite end of the spectrum. At level 18, Amumu will long since have had his passive upgraded all the way, and melee champs will have all of their scaling MR.

42.06-25=17.06. Another run through the MR formula and we have a result of 14.6% reduced magic damage. That's a big fucking swing from the ~30% MR that that squishy had before, to the tune of 15.5% increased magic damage!

Uh. Wait. His passive increased magic damage against the squishiest possible targets at the maximum level to about 15.5%. 15.5-15=.5

...

Point. Fucking. Five.

With flat MR reduction, which works at its absolute best against targets with already low MR, like squishy ranged champions.

Fuck it, moving on.

Melee champs, level 18, yadda yadda. 65.48-25=40.48 Do the MR dance and that's 28.8% decreased magic damage. So about 11% increased damage. To the tankiest champs in the game. All before anybody has so much as even thought about buying MR.

You know, I was going to go through this whole spiel about MR items, and average purchases, and how MR as a stat has kind of gotten fucked anyways? Yeah, that was a thing I was going to do. But then some research and some basic goddamn math told me everything I needed to know, which is that these Amumu changes are MASSIVE FUCKING BUFFS.

And that's all from the MATH. Don't even get me started on his ult applying his passive or his W refreshing it.

It gets better! Amumu with liandry's ticks for true damage XD

Even more better. This most likely applies to allies as well...

It does lol. it's pretty busted.

dude im so high and i really wanted to understand you but im stupid and couldnt. could you explain it in a simpler way bc im interested

Amumu's proposed PBE passive is fucking broken and renders MR items meaningless.

SnakDatSmilesBak1 votes

Hmm then what do you think about Amumu being a solid counter to mr stacking? There are counters to a lot of ad and a lot of ap but we haven't really seen counters to large amounts of armor and magic resist stacking outside of items and a few niche abilities (that don't quite do the job in countering magic resist stacking).

LyingOnLine1 votes

People don't stack magic resist. At most you'll see one actual MR item and Merc Treads unless the other team went stupid heavy into magic damage.

And even if you needed (which, remember, you don't) to counter people stacking MR, Void Staffitem 3135 already does that with its +35% magic penetration.

Add to that the fact that Amumu's new passive is even more effective against squishies than his old one for...well, the vast majority of the game?

It's pretty broken.

ok can't argue against those points they seem valid as long as u speak the truth

Not going to lie I just didnt bother to read your post but give me to it in gist what is your point about amumu buffs

LyingOnLine1 votes

You could always read the other comments...but I'll lay it out again anyways.

The Amumu buffs currently on the PBE are mathematically crazy and will make him wildly OP.

IllegalBagel1 votes

so basically what you're saying if amumu comes mid lane to gank a syndra all I have to do is auto attack and she just has to press r for a free kill?

LyingOnLine1 votes

It's Syndra, all she has to do is press R anyways.

Memes aside, if this goes through Mumu's passive will be more impactful against squishies before Amumu hits level 13 and far more impactful against anybody who buys any amount of MR always.

I mean, assassins got their meta with those juicy mr + damage items, it's damn time for mages to come back and Amumu will be our star. Who the fk even play Amumu? Exactly, move on.

LyingOnLine1 votes

It's just... god damn. I was fine when it was a 10% damage boost. Thought it was an appropriate shift of power from doing damage to squishies to doing damage to tankier champs.

But this? This isn't a tradeoff at all. Shit's just overpowered.

Your reasoning is flawed.

Let's start by examine a champion with 100 MR. In this scenario, with no magic penetration, all magic is reduced by 50%. If my hypothetical attack deals 1,000 magic damage pre-mitigation, it will deal 500 on this target.

Amumu's old passive, at later levels, reduced a target's MR by 25, making our hypothetical champion have 75 MR. 75 MR reduces magic damage by ~.429 percent, or alternatively reduces an attack to ~.571 originally value. Therefore, our 1,000 dmg attack deals 571 damage to this old target.

Amumu's new passive effectively increases post-mitigation damage by

15%. On a 100 MR damage, our 1,000 damage attack deals 500 damage. 15% of 500 is 75. So, our new attack deals a whopping 575 damage... just 4 points more than the old passive.

What about a low MR target? For the sake of convenience, let's pick a 30 MR target- unlikely, but it illustrates the point. Amumu's old passive would have reduced this to 5 MR. Five MR reduces damage by .0476, or alternatively makes an attack deal .952 original damage. A 1,000 dmg attack therefore deals 952 damage.

With 30 MR, damage is reduced by .231, or .769 original value. Our attack deals 769 damage. With Amumu passive, 115 damage is added, meaning Amumu deals 883 damage... less than he always did.

Your logic went awry when you tried to calculate for bonus damage. You neglected to realize Amumu's bonus damage is calculated post-mitigation, meaning your conclusion was heavily misguided.

There is a problem in your percentage calculations :

{quoted}

At level 1, this means that every champion in the game is taking ~30% less magic damages. For those who scale, they take ~40% less magic damages at level 18.

Which brings us to our first testable. Amumu's old passive at level 1 versus his new passive.

42.06-15=27.06. Plug this into the MR formula, and that gives you ~21% reduced magic damages, for a total of a ~9% increase in magic damages.

If I'm right, you do 30% - 21% = 9% increase damages. Now, imagine that the base damages reduction of the champion A is 50% and the damages reduction of that champion with amumu's passive is 0%. If I follow your calculations, I do 50% - 0% = 50% increase damages.

Let's put some numbers : The champion A is hit by a 200 damages spell. With the bast 50% damages reduction, he will take only 100 damages but with the 0% damages reduction, he will take the 200 damages. Going from 100 to 200 is not a 50% damages increase but a 100% damages increase. Here is the problem. Calculations are harder when they involve percentages (example : 100 - 10% = 90 and 90 + 10% = 99).

I'll try to calculate the real increase damages percentage between 30% and 21% reduced damages : I'll take a 100 damages spell hitting a champion. Without Amumu's passive : 100 - 30% = 70 damages. With Amumu's passive : 100 - 21% = 79 damages.

I calculate the ratio between the 2 results. 79 / 70 = ~1.128 = 112.8% : 79 is 112.8% of 70. This means that betwen the 30% damages reduction (70 damages taken) and the 21% damages reduction (79 damages taken), there is a 12% increase damages.

(Sorry for my terrible english :/ )
