@Riot Meddler Karma Changes on PBE Why?

Karma Focused Resolve (W) [text switched around, looking into changes.] Now does damage over 2 ticks instead of 3

I don't know if that is what should have been addressed with her kit . . . . the problem is the W+R and it healing. Maybe someone else will know, but I don't really see this doing much for her at all. The ability does garbage damage, doesn't fit her theme, and is kind of lame.

The current ticks are at the beginning (0:00), in the middle (1:00) and at the end (2:00). If it is done over two ticks, it will likely deal damage only at the beginning (0:00) and end (2:00), syncing it up with the healing of RW. As KingKold already said, this is a significant nerf to her passive interaction and she will get mantra a little less often.

I don't get what their plan is. They buffed the passive in 5.10 to let her scale better into lategame (which failed), and in the meantime removed the damage from RE (so it can't proc the passive) and now removed ADDITIONAL passive procs. This seems contradictory, unless you look at HOW the stacks are gained: Passive procs from RE and W were easy to get, while AAs and Q hits are generally harder. So maybe they want to make the passive more skill reliant?

Which is a laughable attempt, to be honest. But it would fit the pattern of changes they applied to Karma over the last 2 years. They don't know what Karma is supposed to do, what she excels at and how her niche could look like, so they just treat her like any other champion and shoehorn the same skillchecks into her kit that other champions have. The problem is; that wasn't the kind of skillcheck Karma was about, or what she SHOULD be about. If they keep gutting her playstyle in favour of some misslead assumptions, at least they can make her the best at something; Top 1 Ruined Champion in the History of League. Yay!

Karma should be a wisdom based battlemage/enchanter, that has to make multiple decisions within every fight over how to protect allies and hurt enemies. They made her into a low-skill-based artillery/disruptor/enchanter/control-/battle-/fuckdoIknow-mage, that can't make informed decisions on her mantra, as one is superior all the time based on your build. Aka "RQ-spam" or "shieldbot" or "obnoxious tank Karma"

But let's see what they actually have in store for her in the upcoming patch. Let's not forget the RW heal nerf they had for a few days on the PBE and never actually went with.

IxtaliKing3 votes

So maybe they want to make the passive more skill reliant?

If this is the aim I'm gonna go ahead and call that a failure too, since they would be again promoting RQ over her mantras. Karma's changes are ALWAYS poorly thought out, and whenever you call Riot out on it they pull a Stevie Wonder. The Live Balance team is full of shit, flat out.

SilverSquid3 votes

Admittedly, I don't expect the life balance team to understand a champion that most employees of Riot don't understand. Frankly, the update team just roughly try to keep champions up to date, not fix identity crisis(es?). And to be honest, Karma really isn't easy. It took me two seasons and 1 year with you guys to fully understand ALL of her, past, current problems and potential (and there is still things I can learn, I assume).

However, you could very rightly argue, that it's THEIR job to understand THEIR champions. And I got no rebuttal for that.

IxtaliKing3 votes

As much as we've learned about Karma in that time, they should have too. After all, they say even though they don't always comment they're always reading... There's actually no excuse for this level of ignorance, I think they're straight up taking the piss. They don't even have the decency to explain themselves, it's disgusting.

SilverSquid3 votes

I doubt they can read all of this. Like, they got a job to do and there is more text pouring into the boards every day than there can be found in dozen lexicons. Probably someone might read it. I guess. But the more frequent and the more upvoted, the better, right? So the small communities, such as the Karma one, struggles to be heard and paint clear pictures to Riot.

I don't see many Karma posts breaking the magical 50, 20 or even 10 upvotes marker.

^ This right here is what makes me mad, yours do. You make solid arguments everytime and they never have anything to say, even when you call them on their bs it's radio static.

SilverSquid2 votes

I am flattered ^^'. But this is kind of the crux; You need to make quick points to catch the masses and get upvotes, and you need to make elaborate points to convince people/Riot.

I hope with the popularity of Karma I have more Karma players to work with, I just need an excuse to make a thread again. If those changes stick,I should have one, then only need to find the time to do it properly...

Yep. Any decision making Karma ever had in her kit is gone. Any duality or versatility on her abilities is simply not there anymore. Now there's always an optimal ability for the situation which makes her really boring and braindead.

Thank poor Mordekaiser for holding the position for now. R.I.M. and may Riot have mercy on his unholy soul!

I wonder if this is all they are planning to do with Karma, seems like an odd change to make on its own. 1 less tick on her W means 1 less tick of her passive from her full combo, which kinda sucks for her. The damage on her W/RW has always been poor, especially since she lost her Mantra Damage component in 5.10, and this might just make it even less reliable as a damage spell.

I'm just wondering when exactly Riot will be taking feed back on Karma in regards to her gameplay, because it just really feels like the Live Gameplay team don't give a fuck about her.

Edit: Also...

I don't know if that is what should have been addressed with her kit . . . . the problem is the W+R and it healing.

The problem with her RW is also the bonus root duration, she doesn't need it. They should have left the bonus damage.

Karbuncle3 votes

They REALLY don't want her using Rylai's,this nonsense preemptive nerf happened before with taking away her shield bomb at the same time they gave Rylai's 40% slow.

IxtaliKing6 votes

Omg that's probably what it is they don't want her using Rylais... why did I have to love Karma of all champs, I swear she gets screwed over the most lol.

They also don't want Karma to be played anymore,i'm just waiting for the "She's had her time in the spotlight" post.

Her tether doesn't reveal anymore, but Lulu's E gets to do it for 4 seconds.

And more nerfs to her shield.

The Heal on Mantra W does a lot for karma but the extra root duration on RW sucks. Wish they changed that portion that is about it. On terms of the nerfs Karma received on the PBE they are pretty good nerfs that will get noticed but wont effect people to much. Losing a tick sucks but it is not too game breaking. All you have to do is weave in 2 auto attacks to fill the void of losing the extra tick. The shield nerf is ok too but i knew this would happen because of those stupid buffs karma recieved in 5.10 to her shield.

And I see people keep complaining on the damage portion of Mantra W being removed in 5.10 being a huge nerf but it was really a buff because while they nerfed RW damage they buffed the scaling of W from .6 to .9 which is a huge buff. Because lets face it your used the regular W way more often than RW. And if you were using RW you were not looking to deal more damage but just survive to get the heals off. But I do agree the extra root duration sucked and the bigger shield on 5.10 sucked.

SilverSquid3 votes

The Heal on Mantra W does a lot for karma but the extra root duration on RW sucks.

Completely agree. Really stupid idea from rick to handle her power budget this way.

All you have to do is weave in 2 auto attacks to fill the void of losing the extra tick.

Just playing better to get the same results is like working harder for the same pay. It feels shitty.

because of those stupid buffs karma recieved in 5.10 to her shield.

If you had not repeated it, I would've assumed you meant the stupid shield buffs in 6.6 But you probably refer to a common missconception; Karma's shieldvalues weren't really buffed in 5.10. Let's take a closer look! Here's the final values for RE pre and post 5.10:

Main - SHIELD [[110-390 +0.5AP]] to [[110-410 +0.8AP]] AoE - SHIELD [[30-150 +0.3AP]] to [[55-205 +0.4AP]] AoE - DAMAGE [[60-300 +0.6AP]] to [[0-0 +0.0AP]]

So you have a net buff of 0-20 +0.3AP main target shield, 25-55 +0.1AP AoE shield buff, while losing 60-300 +0.6AP damage and the passive procs. And Karma's best waveclearing tool. And one dueling option. AND it would scale with E levels instead of mantra levels, which means it would be net weaker during laning phase. And then some of midgame. Essentially most of the game. You could argue, yes, it still buffed her shield, but if Karma's mantras were balanced before that, not giving this ability ANYTHING in return would've made RE unviable in every situation. I do not think you can call this a "buff" in any way. Maybe a "compensation".

The true peak of stupidity in overbuffing happened in 6.6 This is what threw her out of balance and forced her shieldbotting self into the LCS meta.

And I see people keep complaining on the damage portion of Mantra W being removed in 5.10 being a huge nerf but it was really a buff because while they nerfed RW damage they buffed the scaling of W from .6 to .9 which is a huge buff.

No, that's not the point. It's not about the numbers. It nerfed her options and playstyle. Before the patch you had essentially 3 damage combos, based on the mantra used (it didn't matter which ability you leveled, the mantra damage would be the same).

  • Use RQ for possibly highest or lowest damage with poke possibility.
  • Use RW for safe close combat trading due to heal and intense damage.
  • Use RE for clutch poke that is nearly unavoidable, but spend your defensive CD and push the wave with it (basically a loveletter to the enemy jungler).

However, after the patch, you suddenly had no options anymore. W-RQ was the best combo for midlane Karma now. The only combo. This made Karma from a very flexible champion that could react differently to every situation, to a predictable one-trick-pony. The W-damage buff was part of this problem. Before that you could hit someone with the edge of RE and dash away, granted you knew the distance of it. You could handle troll-pole-fizz, menstruation-move-vlad and even no-you-dont-ult-zed by countering it with RW; it would still deal the full mantra damage while they were on it. Now they can crap on your head, by hiding behind minions, dancing around and dodging RQ.

Because lets face it your used the regular W way more often than RW.

Yes. I also used regualr Q more often than RQ and regular E more often than RE. What's your point?

And if you were using RW you were not looking to deal more damage but just survive to get the heals off.

Holy rotten Twitch in a sink, yes you did!

The early game damage of RW was INSANE. You could break a Morgana shield with it. Did you get that? You could counter a Black Shield by mantraing first, guaranteeing the root. You can't do that now. Now Morgana walks all over Karma. Also, taking E and W in the first two levels would make Karma the lane bully she used to be, because she could just all-in everyone all the time with the intense damage of RW on top of some strong heal+shield. Add some AAs and she could do this every 20-30s. In lane. This made up for the fact that she would drop off insanely much in lategame (also due to the weaker W ratio). Karma's identity was shaped by the fact that she could bully early game, but lose eventually, so you had to rely on becoming a utility mage with some damage and better decision making.

Once again; Karma didn't receive any buffs in 5.10. The stronger shield was to compensate the removed damage, the better passive was to compensate the lack of proccing, the better root was to compensate the removed damage (again), the better W ratio was to compensate Karma's nerfed (damage) options.

The only flat out improvement was that she could W jungle monsters now. But that should probably be called a Quality of Life change. Other than that 5.10 was a missguided attempt of making Karma fresh and improve her decision making, all while making her bland and removing her decision making.

What i mean is as far as nerfs go this is ok. Riot felt karma was strong, im not saying she is but riot felt this way. These nerfs are love taps and good karma players can still work with them. For example if they had instead move the movement speed off of her E, that would suck so bad and no skill can get that movement speed back. :C.

Agree we will call it compensation. I hate riot turned her into lulu with that patch because of the shielding values. I knew that was gonna happen and she would be nerfed... eventually.

Now they can crap on your head, by hiding behind minions, dancing around and dodging RQ. Yes. I also used regualr Q more often than RQ and regular E more often than RE. What's your point?

My point is karma gained .3 ap every time time she used W, she gained more damage period. She gained more damage whenever she went in for her bread and butter combo. She gained more damage on W which she used by far more often than RW. That is what we call a buff. Anytime you have a shift of power from a situational ability to an ability you use all the time it is a buff. If RQ got nerfed by .2 ap and regular q got increased by .1 ap it would be a buff. Again i was only fine with the shift of power in W and RW because A. It was overall net increase in damage. B. You were never suppose to use RW for the damage component it was only for the insane heal. Although removing all the damage in favor of an extended root was a poor choice. They should have removed the bonus damage from RW and gave a new effect that would allow karma still get damage off but not be as free. I dont know what that would be though. C. Honestly old RW was pretty broken. Getting 40% missing hp, with an insane ap ratio is broken. Sometimes I would Mantra W because the difference in damage from RQ was not too big and it was safer and easier to land. I could be at full hp and still use it. The decision between using mantra W or mantra Q should be do i need to kill this guy before he kills me or sustain and kite long enough for me to turn the tables. Now well I can't land skill shots so im gonna mantra W just for the damage, I dont really care if i dont use the 40% missing hp.

Also you can still handle the troll-poll-fizz, the vlad, and the zed. For zed just regular W and when he comes back from his ult he is rooted for a free mantra Q, for fizz just cast W he is likely going to try and block the root duration by troll polling and then once your root is down he is gonna urchen strike you and be in melee range directly in front of you. Great Mantra Q right in his face and now he has to run to get out to avoid the damage and now he is taking free damage from your autos. And the great thing about vladamir is even if he dodges your mantra Q you can still walk away... and he sanguine pool has a super long cool down so if you ever bait out his pool the next time your W is up he is powerless.

Holy rotten Twitch in a sink, yes you did!

The early game damage of RW was INSANE. You could break a Morgana shield with it. Did you get that? You could counter a Black Shield by mantraing first, guaranteeing the root. You can't do that now. Karma's identity was shaped by the fact that she could bully early game, but lose eventually, so you had to rely on becoming a utility mage with some damage and better decision making. This is false Karma beats Morgana in lane. And you can easily counter morgana black shield now... and always have been able too. Pro tip wait for morgana to cast black shield after you tether and then go in for a mantra Q or regular Q. Or wait till the last second for your root to go off and then mantra Q guranteeing the root will go off because your mantra Q out scales her black shield. Also if a morgana doesnt use her black shield at the last second or at least until a second of your root damage has already been applied she is probably bad. Also Karma is still a lane bully at early levels especially at level 1 and 2.

  1. Mantra Q caster minions
  2. wait 5 or so seconds for Q to be back up to Q enemy caster minions again.
  3. Congrats you have shoved your lane opponent to the their tower at level 1.
  4. While enemy laner is csing under tower auto attack and Q their new melee minions or get free harass while they last hit under tower.
  5. Kill the low hp melee minion as the new waves meet.
  6. Hit level 2 before they do walk up to them as they are still level 1
  7. Cast W and walk up to them. 8*. IF they walk into their melee minions to try and dodge your Mantra Q perfect. Follow them into their wave important do not auto attack and draw creep aggro and Mantra Q is guranteed to hit them with both procs. Their minions became their enemy. Now they cannot dodge your mantra Q because you kinda cant miss with the huge explosion radius of the initial impact. 8* If they dont run into their minions try to follow them and get the mantra q off and w root. Dont take damage from tower.

I know what you are gonna say well "that is the only combo you can do now at level 1 and 2" but do you not see how broken it is to just mantra W and shield being insanely durable while doing the "intense damage" of mantra W.

Once again; Karma didn't receive any buffs in 5.10. The stronger shield was to compensate the removed damage, the better passive was to compensate the lack of proccing, the better root was to compensate the removed damage (again), the better W ratio was to compensate Karma's nerfed (damage) options.

Uh Karma did receive buffs with 5.10 in damage terms and better shielding. Whether you like it or not she was buffed. In the wrong way in my opinion but it still was a buff. Karma's damage skyrocketed with just the passive changes alone. You can now potentially mantra Q every 2.75 seconds in a 1v1 or a teamfight. I can explain if you wish. As discussed the bread and butter combo was buffed. You can now save an ally or yourself from huge burst. You have the choice of shielding the bulk of the burst upfront or healing a good amount later. She also can now root someone for an insane duration. She is being nerfed now because she is in fact stronger than she used to be before 5.10. Again im not saying i loved 5.10. i in fact disliked most of the changes. I loved the passive buffs and the shift in power of W and RW. I disliked the complete removal of damage from mantra W, the extended root duration, I also disliked the complete removal of damage from mantra E.

Also you can still handle the troll-poll-fizz, the vlad, and the zed. For zed just regular W and when he comes back from his ult he is root...

Trying not to get tangled up with details, but that wasn't quite the point. There were distinct cases in which different mantras were differently useful, giving your choices more weight. A champion that generally lacks skill expression with the low mechanical skill needed did require something else to make up for it. Besides, rickless said he wanted to hammer home (paraphrasing) her decision making, but this arguably made it worse.

Put shortly; yes, you can still handle assasins well, but how you handle them is worse now.

The 1-8 stuff

See look, I don't know why you are trying to teach me basic stuff about Karma. Or trying to prove you understand her. This is not about you or me playing her. I know this works wonders, but is also an open invitation to the enemy jungler, based on your elo.

I know what you are gonna say well "that is the only combo you can do now at level 1 and 2"

No, I already DID say this is her only combo for midlane. RE does next to nothing. RW has no combo. W-RQ is the only combo, if anything.

do you not see how broken it is to just mantra W and shield being insanely durable while doing the "intense damage" of mantra W.

Different argument.

  1. Nobody claimed they tried to remove her lane bully nature. So either they hid this from us or it was NOT intentional. I prefer assuming Riot is honest to us, but who knows.
  2. It wasn't broken. It was strong, yes, but not more ore less strong than Jax jumptrading you with his reflect. It's a straightforward combo that guarantees damage and provides some protection and it would work against some and it would fail against others.
  3. Even when being beaten by her in lane, Karma wouldn't win the game. Any decent player knew this. Karma did always bully, but did never snowball. Knowing this you could rest assured and play the Nasus game.

Uh Karma did receive buffs with 5.10 in damage terms and better shielding.

Any minor and major rework tries to keep the powerlevel of a champion roughly the same. The intent is a mechanics change and power shifts, not a buff. Even if certain parts of an ability are improved and others are made worse, I don't think using the word "buff" here is useful. You might do that, if you wish, but I must disagree.

Karma's damage skyrocketed with just the passive changes alone.

In my opinion, it became more gambly. And the low consistency was more troubling to me than the increased damage potential.

You can now potentially mantra Q every 2.75 seconds in a 1v1 or a teamfight.

Which I don't find is a good selling point for her character or design.

As discussed the bread and butter combo was buffed.

Because they killed her flexibility, which freed up power budget for the only combo left. Flexibility always comes at a price, so removing it...

You can now save an ally or yourself from huge burst.

You always could?

She also can now root someone for an insane duration.

And I can not tell you how much I despise this. To quote myself on this: " It does not fit her theme, it does not benefit her kit, it's not reliable for her supporting. It's just clogging her power budget for no reason."

She is being nerfed now because she is in fact stronger than she used to be before 5.10.

Arguably yes. They did this with 6.6, which I predicted and critisized. Also I don't know if you implied this, but I'd rather have her being "better" than "stronger".

Again im not saying i loved 5.10. i in fact disliked most of the changes. I loved the passive buffs and the shift in power of W and RW. I disliked the complete removal of damage from mantra W, the extended root duration, I also disliked the complete removal of damage from mantra E.

I hated the passive buffs, because I knew they were linked to the shieldbomb removal, which was an utter misstake. But I see we come from a very close perspective to this. We probably get along better than this discussion makes it appear. As you seem to be passionate about Karma, as well as articulate, and seek to improve her, I would love to welcome you in the boards-community who tries their best to create awarenes for her troubles. Wanna join?

REDREX71 votes

Put shortly; yes, you can still handle assasins well, but how you handle them is worse now.

I would argue the opposite. Before the shielding value buffs or compensation you would never mantra shield an assassins damage because it was not strong enough to stop their damage. It needed levels and ap. And the shield compensations now allowed you to have that option because the scaling is just so absurd. RQ to straight up kill, RW if you think you can survive and turn later or just escape, RE to just run away. I will admit you lost the power to farm a far with the removal of RE damage. Wait how did you feel about karma not being able to shield minions? I am torn, i liked it and didnt like it. I miss shielding minions to deny minions and get clutch shields or damages off. But at the same time I understand I know some players hated accientally shielding a minion.

This is not about you or me playing her. I know this works wonders, but is also an open invitation to the enemy jungler, based on your elo.

-- Generally the junglers never really expect me to have such great pushing power. And if I feel the jungler may come I can go ward while the enemy laner is under turret csing. But yes sometimes the enemy jungler does come and I die, but I find most of the time they don't.

Back to the RW changes. I hated the old RW because it was not really different from regular W. It just got an increase in damage. So the change to a longer root duration was at least something new. Now the changes should have been RW gives new utility with slight damage. That way both mid and support karma get new ways to get off damage and utility.

  1. It wasn't broken. It was strong, yes, but not more ore less strong than Jax jumptrading you with his reflect. It's a straightforward combo that guarantees damage and provides some protection and it would work against some and it would fail against others.

-- I think we will agree to disagree on this one. I think its broken a champion can do insane amount of damage and get an insane heal all in one ability, that cant be dodged. And you can only stop it if you were fast enough or had a good escape.

  1. Even when being beaten by her in lane, Karma wouldn't win the game. Any decent player knew this. Karma did always bully, but did never snowball. Knowing this you could rest assured and play the Nasus game.

-- I would argue that karma's carry potential right now is like parabola sort of. Being a gradual decline going to the mid and late game and then spiking sharing back up at 6 items. Because the passive buffs make her really strong later game in damage and the shield compensation gives her the best of both worlds in terms of saving allies and dealing the damages. Once Karma gets liandries and void she can get through clumped up tanks fairly well compared to other mage supports.

-- Agree to disagree x2. Which is fine. We all can't agree on everything but we both love karma.

In my opinion, it became more gambly. And the low consistency was more troubling to me than the increased damage potential.

-- I love the gamble.

Which I don't find is a good selling point for her character or design.

-- I dont know how to respond to this so I wont.

Because they killed her flexibility, which freed up power budget for the only combo left. Flexibility always comes at a price, so removing it...

-- I think karma got more flexible in saving herself and allies. but less flexible in dealing damage. Ideally in my opinion any changes should make RQ and W the best in terms of damage output and RW and RE need to be more utility focused but also deal decent damage.

You always could?

-- No. Karma could never complete negate a karthus ulti or zed ulti or any huge burst completely. Now RE shield saves your ally from burst from a champion 90% of the time or so. Before RE needed levels and ap to save an ally completely. Now the shield scaling is so much you dont need levels really to save someone. I think ideally all of Karma's ulted abilities (except for RQ) need meaningful utility in order for them to be used even at low ranks. Right now Q is always maxed so RQ is always good, RW the 40% heal is always good so it has a niche, and RE scales too good so it is always goodtoo Before RQ was always good, RW was always good for the heal, but before RE never felt really good because it never had meaningful utility and it needed levels and ap to feel good.

And I can not tell you how much I despise this. To quote myself on this: " It does not fit her theme, it does not benefit her kit, it's not reliable for her supporting. It's just clogging her power budget for no reason."

-- I agree with you that it is clogging up her power budget for no reason but at the veyry least it was something new on RW rather just increase in damage. I think im against just increasing a champs damage so plainly.

Also I don't know if you implied this, but I'd rather have her being "better" than "stronger".

--Agreed

I hated the passive buffs, because I knew they were linked to the shieldbomb removal, which was an utter misstake.

-- I think they could have just gave mantra shield a limit on the number of times it can lower her passive. Maybe two or three? If they had did that I would be very pleased with Karma. And I love the passive buffs because of the micro managing of it, weaving in autos and being able to turn the tables at the last second. If they had done that my only problems would be RW root duration.

Wanna join?

-- Yes I want to join but I have sort of always been there except IM not as vocal as you and right now college is hurting me D: Also dont you hate waiting for winter wonder karma release?? The new W visual are memorizing to me... IDK why. My only problem is that they did not make it to where when Karma dies she falls to her knees and she becomes ice and once she becomes ice she falls to the floor and shatter. Oh and they didnt give her long flowing hair. I am a man that loves a woman with long or medium hair...
