@meddler: it does not matter how much damage or armor shred you put on garens spin

as long as its not enough that he can murder anyone in the game through repeated shields and sustain mechanics within 3 seconds, he will remain in a bad spot and get outdueled even by champions hes supposed to counter, in extended fights.

he will not win against a riven who lifesteals and shields in regular intervals to absorb his abilities. he will not win against tanks who shield off his spin and deal any form of % health damage. he will not win against certain adc who just drain tank him for 3 seconds or hit summoner heal once.

be it shield mechanics, lifesteal or spellvamp in champion kits, masteries, or items, you have made in combat sustain easily accessable for practically everyone in this game. most champions have some way to either regain health or entirely absorb damage and stay in a fight.

garen is a champion whos kit is built around dealing sustained damage. but the fact that his passive is restricted out of combat sustain forces him into a playstile that simply doesnt work for him.

he is too slow to play like a skirmisher and dive in and out of fights to regenerate health between trades. but if he cant end a fight within 3 seconds, he will get out sustained by his opponent and killed while his spin is on cooldown.

more important than adding a passive onto his spin that he can buy on what is pretty much THE core item for him, is a way to actually be able to take extended fights when he manages to get onto his opponent. and that means adding some form of in combat sustain to his kit like other juggernauts have available.

If he ever got Access to in-Combat sustain, he would need a resource. Which directly opposes Garen's goal as baby's first champion.

there are plenty of resourceless champions who have in combat sustain available.

even if its just lifesteal.

go ahead, and try to fight a renekton with courage of the colossus. its a fight you will not win. its not a matter of the shield being overtuned, but the fact that he has a way to entirely absorb damage, and regain health with a single lifesteal item and his q, while you dont.

as it stands right now, if youre not going to kill your enemy within 3 seconds on garen, you will lose a battle of attrition. against practically anyone.

they want to add a mechanic to his spin.

imo id sacrifice some of the out of combat health regeneration at lvl 16 if id get a way to activate the passive only for a few seconds in a fight.

change the passive from % max health scaling to % missing health scaling to be overall less at lvl 16, and make it activate for a few seconds when his spin ends, depending on how many damage ticks he got on an enemy champion with the spin.

he wouldnt deal as much damage as with the armor shred, but would be able to take extended fights like other juggernauts. he would have something more than auto attacks when his spin is on cooldown.

plus, it adds a layer of decision making. cancelling the spin early would mean you stop dealing damage, but possibly regenerate health when you need it (in case you hit enough enemies with the spin first).

I disagree with your general assessment, but I agree with your suggestion, even for different reasons.

The way I play him, Garen doesn't need to win 1-on-1 fights, he just needs to not lose them. Eat skill-shots, absorb damage, zone enemy threats, and now provide armor shred to the rest of your team, there are plenty of things you can do that's useful for your team. And count on them for actually dealing the damage.

Or alternatively, just split-push and if they send only 1 person, ignore it and still take the tower. If they send more than 1, count on your team for winning the 4v3 (that's not guaranteed, but over the course of many games, it still works out).

But I still agree that the armor shred is a rather strange buff, and I would much prefer they add a new mechanic on W to make him more interactive. In-combat sustain is a potential idea.

Every other juggernaut has in-combat sustain, hell, Yorick can draintank like a madman with Grasp, but not Garen.

So it's actually to kill tanks even faster... it isn't designed to do what you were talking about it doing... as if tanks weren't already getting killed fast enough...

the problem isnt that he doesnt deal enough damage to tanks imo. his damage against the is fine with just a cleaver.

its really just that over long fights, even his w cant make up for the enemies ability to entirely negate damage. especially since his damage comes in very predictable chunks of spin damage over 3 seconds.

even a potato can react to his spin and activate a shield, or hit summoner heal, or a bork active or whatever. either he deals so much damage that the enemy is in ult range with one spin, or he wont ever win extended fights.
