@Riot, how about buffing a support for a change?

If you look at the last changes to champions, you see something disturbing for the support role. 15 out of the 17 supports had a nerf as their last change. Maybe it is time to try some buffs? I know a few support champions who could use some love.

Now see if you can spot the two that didn't get nerfed last time Riot paid attention to them: Janna 5.1 Howling gale missile width decreased to 120 from 150. Lulu 4.13 Glitterlance AP ratio removed, Whimsy movement speed reduced to 3/3.5/4/4.5/5 seconds from 5 at all ranks, Whimsy mana cost reduced to 65 at all ranks from 65/70/75/80/85. Nami 4.13 Movement speed reduced to 335 from 340, Ebb and Flow cooldown increased to 10 seconds from 9 seconds. Sona 5.1 Movement speed reduced to 325 from 330, Hymn of Valor power chord damage amplification reduced to 40% from 50%. Soraka 4.21 Base health regen reduced to 2.5 from 4.675, health regen growth stat reduced to 0.5 from 0.7, Astral infusion passive AP ratio range increase from 0.2-0.4 to 0.4-0.8. Taric 3.15 Gemcraft armor scaling reduced to 20% (from 30%), Shatter armor damage scaling reduced to 20% (from 30%), shred base values lowered to 5/10/15/20/25 (from 10/15/20/25/30), shred armor scaling lowered to 5% (from 10%). Alistar 4.15 Alistar can no longer land an additional basic attack on his Headbutted target as they fly away. Blitzcrank 4.8 Rocket grab mana cost reduced to 100 from 120, Static Field mana cost reduced to 100 from 150. Braum 4.13 Concussive blows trigger damage lowered to 32 + (8 * level) from 38 + (12 * level), Stand Behind Me mana cost increased to 50/55/60/65/70 mana from 30/40/50/60/70 mana, Glacial Fissure first target knockup duration reduced to 1.0/1.25/1.5 seconds from 1.5 seconds at all ranks, slow reduced to 40/50/60% from 60% at all ranks, slow duration after leaving slow field reduced to 0.25 seconds from 1.5 seconds. Leona 4.5 Base health regeneration reduced to 7 from 9, Eclipse bonus resistances reduced to 20 / 30 / 40 / 50 / 60 from 25 / 35 / 45 / 55 / 65. Thresh 4.13 Dark Passage now only shields the first ally to be near the Lantern in addition to Thresh, The Box no longer deals additional damage to opponents that break extra walls beyond the first. Annie 4.4 Base damage nerfs but better AP scaling. I would call it a nerf to support Annie, but that is debatable. Decide for yourself :) Fiddlesticks 4.21 Dread: applied by abilities instead of being an aura. Dark wind now prioritizes targets not yet hit, can still hit multiple times but will only silence once, silence duration to 1.25 seconds from 1.2 seconds. Karma 4.17 Mantra can now be primed while Karma is disabled. Morgana 4.14 Black Shield base shield health reduced to 70/140/210/280/350 from 95/160/225/290/355, Soul Shackles base magic damage reduced to 150/225/300 from 175/250/325. Zilean 4.19 Heightened learning range reduced to 1500 from global. Zyra 3.13 Deadly Bloom range reduced to 800 from 825, damage changed to 70 / 105 / 140 / 175 / 210 (+65% AP) from 75 / 115 / 155 / 195 / 235 (+60% AP), Rampant Growth range increased to 850 from 825, passive cooldown reduction reduced to 2 / 4 / 6 / 8 / 10% from 4 / 8 / 12 / 16 / 20%, Plant base damage changed to 23 (+6.5 per level) from 26 (+6 per level), reduced the delay before seeds can be stepped on by enemies to 1.5 seconds from 3, Stranglethorns no longer stuns after the knockup ends.

tl;dr Supports got systematically nerfed, so maybe it is time to buff some of them a bit instead.

Yeah they have been nerfing the supports lately havent they? However I dont think they can make typical support champs stronger in the sense of damage because of as you can see the campions will become overpowered, but then again you dont really want some of them to be too tanky. But aside from base stats on champions their kit cant be "too" good, for example when braum first came out, you could stun lock people and thresh's lantern losing the shielding on all allys that is fair i think. just my thoughts

4.13 Glitterlance AP ratio removed, Whimsy movement speed reduced to 3/3.5/4/4.5/5 seconds from 5 at all ranks, Whimsy mana cost reduced to 65 at all ranks from 65/70/75/80/85.------this was because top lane lulu was too strong

4.15 Alistar can no longer land an additional basic attack on his Headbutted target as they fly away.---this was because of top lane alistar

Taric got his nerfs for his top lane/jungle performance, Fiddle is way stronger as a jungler, Soraka got reworked to keep her out of solo lanes. Many of these nerfs were not even targeted at supports, but the support role does suffer from it. And most supports cannot even be buffed without making them dominate in other lanes.

Sometimes I wish Riot enforced the meta a little. Support Lulu would be in a much better place without the threat of solo lane Lulu becoming oppressive. Yes, it reduces creativity and experimentation, but supports pay a high price for it. The support role as a whole could use a little boost compared to the other roles.

Many of them do not need buffs by any means.

Leona, Taric, Morgana, Blitzcrank, Thresh, Fiddlesticks, Alistar, etc. are all very good and very viable supports right now. The big issue with making changes to champions like these is that if Riot is not careful, they end up reigning absolute dominion over bot lane or mid lane - it should not be forgotten that many champions you have listed here as supports are exceptionally viable for mid lane as well. Zyra, Annie, Karma, Fiddlesticks, Lulu, Morgana, etc. are extremely well-fit for the role of mage, they just happen to be mainly supports right now as the meta demands. Going off-meta, champions who can support are also powerful in other roles as well - AD Leona top lane is super scary, Lulu used to dominate all lanes, Fiddlesticks is a superb jungler, and I've had a fair share of success as AD Blitzcrank jungle (and AP Blitzcrank mid).

The big picture is not how changes to champions will influence their roles, rather how they'll influence League of Legends gameplay overall by being played in ways unintended by the team behind champion creation - AP Yi anyone?

Hopefully that cleared at least something up... Ginny

(P.S. I don't want Lulu to be everywhere again :|)

Taric is viable, lol nice joke.

The fact that you don't think Taric is viable is hilarious.

You must not see very many Tarics?

Taric is pretty weak compared to most of other supports in the game. Sure he's tanky, but why pick him if I can get Leona or Alistar? He can heal, but I can pick Soraka, Nami, or even Sona and heal much more than him. He's slated for a rework anyway, he's in quite a bad spot right now. There's a reason why he isn't common at all, and very rarely picked in high elo or competitive play, pretty much any support and their mothers are just better than him.

Leona 4.5 Base health regeneration reduced to 7 from 9, Eclipse bonus resistances reduced to 20 / 30 / 40 / 50 / 60 from 25 / 35 / 45 / 55 / 65.

That's not telling the whole story, though, is it? She got +20% bonus armor and +20% bonus mr while eclipse was active in that patch, which means that leona's last change was actually a net buff (armor can break even at lv1 with runes+masteries, while mr breaks even after first mr purchase).

I think you are confused with the older patch 3.14 where she got the buffs you mentioned. In patch 4.5 it really was just the nerf I put in my post. The same story is true for most other supports, they got a large buff at the end of season 3 and then some nerfs during season 4.

Oh, that's possible. I thought she got the base armor/mr on eclipse dropped at the same time as the bonus scaling was given to her, though?

Yes, both times the base values were dropped by 5, but the first time she got compensated with more bonus scaling. Patch 4.5 was a pure nerf because Leona was dominating together with Annie and Morgana. Leona is still a very strong support, but the fact is that the last change to her was a nerf.

Being nerfed is not a reason to get buffed.

I do agree that supports could use some love but your argument doesn't mean anything.
