Kill Contribution should not be a factor for Mastery Rating

Support Tops, Splitpushers etc are very underrated by this system.

Should be less of a factor. Not completely ignored, but yes, it is pretty hard to get an S as a support if you don't take kills.

...Your grade is calculated by comparing you against other players on that champion and in that role only. A support is not compared to a mid laner or ADC that gets lots of kills. So no, it's not hard. The only reason it'd expect you to have more kills is if most everyone else on that champion in that role gets lots of kills (they don't).

If I take less kills than other people on Janna or Soraka, that should not prevent me from getting the best grades because kills are not what Janna or Soraka is supposed to do to begin with. I rest my case.

Deep Terror Nami1 votes

If you aren't getting S's that's you lol. Few/no kills does not prevent it.

Well, maybe confirmation bias, but I do remember getting a few S's when I accidentally kill-stealed a lot and didn't feel like I played particularly well and on the other hand barely getting an A when I saved my ADC multiple times and carried the game, and just had 0 kills.

I'm pretty sure it does not take into account kill counts. In your first example, u had gone around the map, participated in every fight even if they were kill-steals. In the second example, u followed the ADC around and had not contributed as extensively around the whole map in fights compared to the first one. Try to play Shen or TF and join in on every fight and take note of your Mastery Rating.

I'm definitely not sure about that. It sure would be easier if Riot was a bit more transparent on how their system work, but no, you understand, they can't tell or we could game the system... /sarcasm

The problem is the system expects u to participate in every fight if u noticed... to get a better chance at S+. That is not realistic for splitpushers who have a low KDA and kill contribution.

If u noticed, it does take Kill Contribution as a factor. If u participated in every fight, your chances of an S is greater. How do u explain Mastery in Blind Picks... U're not being compared based on your role- that system isn't in yet.

Still, it comes down to the fact that no one plays a champ the same way. Say, for example, Nunu- u can play a 2sec snowball Nunu, a counterjungling one or a Saitama-punching Nunu. There is not a 'best way' to play a champ. And I can tell u right away the 2sec snowball Nunu will on average get a better rating.

Those are going to be outlier cases (very few people on very few champions in only a role or 2). It doesn't really matter though; the vast majority of your points come from the win, not your grade.

The main reason it would matter is in the case of Hextech Crafting where you need to get an S to get your seasonal chest (or inflating your ego with high scores), and in that case you can only get it once. There's no reason for Riot to change the whole system so that a handful of people can get an S instead of an A in a single game.

The Riot system is able to determine in-game or post-game where you played (i.e. your position, more precisely than your role), and you are compared with other players that used the same champion AND at the same position. Lulu bots are compared to other Lulu bots, not with Lulu mid. That's what Deep Terror Nami meant, and it works like that even in Blind Pick where the positions are not assigned officially pre-game.

Mastery Rating in itself is flawed, and is by no means relevant in any way besides boosting ones ego.

Which is never good.

The whole Mastery Rating system should be deleted. It was a cool idea but it was implemented wrong.

DeathBurst1 votes

What was cool in the idea? Could you elaborate? Because implementation can always be tweaked and improved, and it's especially worth it if the idea below it is cool.

WukongMain2 votes

for me what's cool is the idea of having an actual representation of my skill on a champion. i can be like hey i got this and this mastery on this and this champion, and instantly my friends would know hey, this guys good at those champions For example, i got 300k Mastery points on wukong, that is by no means a representation of my skill on Wukong. i just wish that's how the system worked

Maybe tweak the system so you can lose points for poor play. Maybe take your stats you get in-game and cross-check it with every other wukong in your division and give you a rating in comparison.

Obviously for poor play you'd lose points meaning keeping the highest rating..actually means something. and obviously as you climb elo, divisions become better meaning it'll be harder to actually stay at the top.

i use wukong as an example. idk, right now the whole system is just so meaningless...

I'd rather they have a simpler system which is based entirely on Number of Games Played only... although it becomes a grind. The current system is skewed towards teamfighters and only one way to win the game. We know that isn't true at all.

DeathBurst1 votes

Well, that's much more constructive than your initial comment.

I mostly agree, but I think your suggestion is quite complex. Maybe a similar but simpler solution would be to simply get the average of your X previous game on a champion, so if you consistently get S and A, you'll have a high rating, but you won't if you just play a crapton of games and always get C.

WukongMain1 votes

that's true, basically i just want the system to be accurate.

The way it is now it may as well not be there lol, so inaccurate

ValyrianBlade1 votes

Fully agree.

I find it incredibly frustrating that I can play an amazing game and only get an A- because another laner got 6 solo kills in lane before we even grouped. And he probably only got an A because I got 5 kills in lane myself...

Kill contribution should have no impact. Having a decent number of kills/assists? For sure! But as a percentage of total? Why should my rating be lower because one of the enemies who happened to NOT be my lane opponent sucked?

I remember a game where I got up 3-0 in mid lane insanely quickly and was going to snowball/carry to my first S+ for sure (I've thankfully had some since), and out of spite my lane opponent decided to go intentionally feed my top laner. So my top laner got 9 solo kills off of him and I only got an A- because my kill participation was too low. Like seriously, that's BS. I single-handedly won that game in the first 3 minutes by going 3-0 and making my lane opponent rage so hard that he opted to feed another player intentionally...
