Was trying to figure out why people were complaining about ranged champions so OP...

Then I went against Jayce as a melee top laner. I'm now on the bandwagon to improving melee's or at least nerfing ranged, possibly both.

What exactly are the weaknesses of the ranged top laners right now? Why exactly pick a melee over a ranged champion in top at the moment?

I genuinely want some answers to these questions.

EDIT: I'm going to make a statement that's a bit farfetch'd, but I genuinely believe it to be true. The only way to win top right now is be a ranged champion to poke down melees, or be a melee with a gap closer with tons of innate damage and can build tanky with itemization. (i.e. Irelia JarvanIV MonkeyKing )

I think it's just jayce rn XD

And Kennen, and Quinn. Kayle is kind of annoying, but she has to activate her ability and you can just back off when she activates her E so you can at least play around it. Definitely not near as terrible as the other 3 I mentioned.

yeah, those three(mainly kenen and jayce) are just so.. op

u guys forgot about gnar wat

Also easy to play around like Kayle, but was annoying during the time Frozen Mallet wasn't nerfed and he didn't get nerfed.

Gnar is probably the most oppressive top laner.... Im surprised hes not 100% ban

And requires a good team to be able to full utilize his potential. He has a 46% win rate right now. I don't know what Gnar's you're playing against, but I can generally beat them.

Im in diamond on my main.

So obviously bad gnars right

LegacyDAP1 votes

I never said they were bad, in fact I'd have to expect they're good if they're able to bully you. But Gnar isn't a good champion right now and has very obvious weaknesses and strengths. I haven't been bullied by a Gnar since his nerfs.

You must not be in a very high rank

LegacyDAP1 votes

Even if I was in high rank Gnar has a 46% win rate. Your point is still invalid. Also link your account since you're acting so mighty and high about this rank thing.

I at least have the courage to post on my main and show my rank. You already stated you're not telling your rank. For all I know you're lying and boosted.

And Lee Sin has a 47% win rate but is arguably the best early to mid game jungler in the game...?

Ryze had a winrate of 45% before the rework but he was known as one of the best champs in the game once mastered....

Winrate doesnt mean jack shit in these situations and i respect your opinion but saying that gnar isnt top tier because his 47% winrate is pretty ignorant.

I'm actually starting to think that it might be a good change to do a universal 25-50 range reduction for all ranged champions (with maybe some exceptions for champions who already struggle with having short range - particularly Urgot). This would do a couple of things - make existing gapclosers more efficient, make range character more likely to take significant damage from minion aggro, etc. Might be something worth Riot's time to look into. Some abilities would need to be specifically rebalanced around this though - abilities like Vayne's Condemn, which is intentionally the same range as her AAs, for example.

LegacyDAP2 votes

I think it'd be better to have a universal damage reduction for ALL champions. Damage creep is a problem that's lasted this entire season that people have wanted gone. The end of Season 5 was pretty good, but wasn't really balanced for ranged champions. Everything else was amazing though!

Anonagon2 votes

I'm not going to argue that damage creep is or isn't a problem, but reducing damage for all champions doesn't solve the problem for melee vs. ranged. It may take Kennen an extra Q or two to kill an opponent but that's not going to actually provide a melee opponent with anything to do against him.

LegacyDAP1 votes

Oh, my bad I read your post wrong... Thought that said damage reduction not range. But yeah, a range reduction throughout all ranged champions might actually be a pretty good idea. Especially champions that thrive throughout the top lane, or have a massive range advantage against other ranged champions. (i.e. Ashe Caitlyn )

Also removal of RFC would be a good place to start too. That item is the biggest annoyance, it's basically a free 1/5th of an enemies health when it's up, and doesn't give a chance for punishment in a siege.

What? If you're trying to make an argument about those champions being better than the ranged champions in top lane right then the only champion that you can make an argument for with that statement is Yasuo. And Yasuo isn't necessarily a healthy champion right now either.

Requiemsfire4 votes

What's sad is that I'm pretty sure Quinn can beat all of those.

Well, there's not very many ranged toplaners that end up tanky, and sometimes you really just need an extra tank.. Not too many of them have good hard engage CC, not many of them provide a front line.. Sure they'll win their lane, but that doesn't mean much in the end. Also, Jayce is a pain in the ass either way.

LegacyDAP1 votes

Generally winning lane leads to stomping the rest of the game in low elos. It's the reason Jayce isn't picked that much in Pro play, but an extremely contested pick in Solo Queue. Ranged champions also have lots of itemization options that give them all the stats they want including survivability/safeness. (i.e. item 3156 item 3071 item 3053 item 3094 item 3022 ). Tanks are not good anymore in Solo Queue, the only good tanks right now is probably Sion and Malphite.

PhDs Nuts1 votes

lol?

Are we pretending that melee champs without gap closers/pulls are supposed to be good against ranged champs now?

How dare one class counter another.

LegacyDAP2 votes

no?

It's not even that Range just counter melees with no gap closers. It's literally like broken rock paper scissors.

Ranged > Tanks; Ranged = Fighters; Fighter > Tank;

There is literally no reason to pick a tank, tanks are no longer innately tanky enough to beat anything in meta. Most fighters can build tanky and still do the job of a tank. It's pointless to be a tank.

NervPursuit1 votes

that's why I ban jayce every game I can ban

Kaioko1 votes

Ranged champions trade early game and count on ending the game before your MonkeyKing or Malphite start shining in the late game. Ask for ganks play defensive build tanky early so that you can just farm and then hard engage his team so you don't have time to poke late game and you'll find that you tend to win often.

You name Jayce for example but he doesn't even have a 50% win rate currently in plat or above.
