Just started playing ranked; have a few questions

After two years of playing normals, I decided to try ranked. So far, I'm Silver II with 15 wins/13 losses. I've failed my series to promote to Silver I three times. I believe this means that I belong in Silver II. Can someone with more experience playing ranked let me know if I am correct in assuming this? If you're gold now, how long were you in Silver?

It doesn't always mean you belong there, it mostly just means you have some things to fix to make sure you win those promos, or that you were extremely unlucky like I always am going from d4-d3 on my main. It could mean you belong there, but the only time you belong in silver is when you either can't or refuse to learn to be better.

Know that ranked is sometimes a gamble. You can try your best and carry hard and still lose because your bot lane overextended multiple times. Does that mean you belong in Silver 2? No! Your rank/ELO =/= your true skill so just keep playing until you can confidently believe your true skill. (Just don't say you deserve challenger though)

I'd say you would be correct if my sample size was smaller. However, many statisticians consider a sample size of 30 the point when you can start making assumptions about the population (in this case, my true win rate over a theoretically infinite number of games). I've played and won one ranked game since posting this topic, so I'm now 16/13, at 29 games played. With this many games, it is unreasonable to expect a winrate in Silver elo of > 60% unless I improve at the game. Therefore, if I remain at my current skill level, the rank I deserve is Silver.

You'd have to fail to make it to S1 30 times, not play 30 games. And even then, it only means you have a pretty low chance to make it to S1... not an absolute 0. Heimerdinger

Give it some time, you've only got 28 games under your belt. Just work on improving and learning while playing more games, and eventually you'll get to whatever rank is appropriate for you.
