Why the Warwick VGU is the best one so far imo.

It's still what made old Warwick Warwick, they actually preserved his identity instead of giving him a new one.

Too often this does not happen. Some champion reworks create kits that are really awesome and function properly but they end up not being a rework of the old champion but more like a completely new release, killing the old identity in the process. Take Gragas for example, who was a very bursty AP diver before but who got turned into a tank, or Poppy, who went from a hyperscaling fighter with a weak early game and was turned into a tank, or Sion, who was either a crit-based Juggernaut or a burst mage and who got turned into a tank.

As someone who was a Sion main before his release and who played both the crit and the AP version of him, I was extremely hyped for the rework. Both builds were fun but for several years he was in a really shitty state and nothing would be done about him until his VGU, pretty much like with Mordekaiser right now. I stopped playing him and just hyped myself up for the rework to be exactly like the old Sion but just a more balanced and updated version of it but in the end I was somewhat disappointed. After playing him a few games as his new tank version I realized that old Sion is dead and new Sion is going to be a fulltank. I'm not saying that his current kit is bad or unhealthy or anything, it's actually pretty good for what it's intended to do, but It's just nothing like what the old Sion was.

But then there's Warwick. Considering the really shitty state and outdatedness of his kit before the rework I thought Riot would yet again kill his identity and give him a new one instead of updating it but boy was I wrong. He's literally exactly like old Warwick, just better. He's still the easiest jungler to pick up but now he also has some depth, he's still a sustain god but in a more interesting way than before, his ult is still the awesome team-carrying suppression tool that it used to be and he's still the prime example for a champion that synergized with on-hit and auto attacks a lot. If you just look at what his current kit looks like and then think about the fact that they didn't give up on that pile of crap and actually updated it, you can just see how awesome the rework really is.

It's a rework that old Warwick mains AND new Warwick players can enjoy and not just the latter like in some other cases.

Problem is that some kits are not salvageable. Sion was not salvageable. He was a mess and his kit made little sense. He also lacked a real identity. The only way they could save him was by making a new champion. WW on the other hand was salvageable. His kit was more boring than anything. He had a theme and SOME counterplay(even if it was weak). Most of WW's problems were easily fixed. How would you fix old sion while keep his graphical AND gameplay theme intact? Having him be a warrior with an axe that kills you with magic spells like a mage makes no sense.

I have to disagree, I'm pretty sure they could have made AD Sion's identity work. A Juggernaut with ton of steroids that make his auto attacks hurt a lot, and if you ignore him and don't kite him properly, he will just heal for a shitton and cut you down without mercy.

That was the identitiy he always had and if you gave a champion designer the task to work out a champion based on that for half a year or so, he would have come up with something that would not only work but also be pretty much what the reworked Sion should have been.

While i agree with this, it just conflicts too much with Aatrox's design space and while i understand Sion came first, Aatrox holds that design space down more closely and better than he does.

Sion's kit was still better preserved than what I ever thought it would, and while I agree he basically became a new champion, I also feel he couldve ended up a lot worse than he did.

He still has his Stack passive, his State was changed into a Roar and was made a skill shot. His E was made into an actual skill, and his old ulti and passives were combined and reimagined. The only part of his kit that plays anythign similar to his old one is his W and its passive, unlike Poppy who while has her "press W, run and someone and bash them into a wall and into oblivion with autos and Q's, and now Warwick with his, run at someone like a mad man and swipe them to death while sustaining.

He is even the same overall character unlike Poppy and Sion, which is appreciated,

This is arguably true of Sion, who had no identity, but Poppy at least did have an identity. She was a hard-scaling melee carry (the single hardest in the game, but her rework didn't need to preserve that since the way she scaled was super toxic). Instead of trying to preserve her identity, she was made into another tank.

It's funny, a VGU seems to be synonymous with "this champion will be made into a tank now".

Thank God CertainlyT was given Warwick's VGU. Whatever the idiots on this board think about him, he's probably the most creative and arguably the smartest designer Riot has. He actually considered Warwick's identity and sought to enhance it, rather than just turn him into another tank.

I mean, tank probably fits an armored Demacian yordle better than weird late-game invincible assassin. When I see Poppy, I think she would rather protect someone, rather than run through everything and just fuck someone up.

So you know Poppy wasn't always a kawaii desu desu cutie pie dumb blonde bimbo, right?

Old Poppy was a fucking thuggish ruggish pull a trigga kill a n!gg@ girl, who desired to crush Noxus with her giant hammer.

Her being a late game carry went well with that theme.

Riot, instead of updating her to be healthy for the game and fit into the universe better, made a completely new character, forgot that they were supposed to rework Poppy, realized this new character was also a yordle with a hammer, and named her Poppy.

what about old Xerath? His kit was perfect and unique. Today, it would not have been oppressive at all. They GUTTED HIM COMPLETELY. The new xerath is more like kogmaw then old Xerath.

Xerath was the only long range assassin in the game and the range wasnt even that long. Especially in the age of 3 gap closer per champ realm.

I really don't see how you can say he's "still a sustain god" and that it's more "interesting" when they took a lot of the healing off of his Q, and made his passive only heal him when he's below half health.

Big Lincoln1 votes

because his Q does more damage, so he's still healing for more and it heals off of any on hits attached, like Sheen

ArnoldSchwarzens2 votes

New Q heals for 70% of the damage dealt instead of 80% and deals more damage than before so it probably heals you for more than it did previously, especially if you consider that it applies lifesteal now. Passive is healing him for less, this we can agree on, but his ult also heals for all damage it deals now instead of just 30%, which is much more than before.

Considering all this, I'd still call him a sustain god.

His passive actually heals for more if he is under 50%
