The Problem with New Champions

Introductory Statement: Let me start by saying that I think the creation of new champions is good and necessary. Eventually the game will get to a point where adding champions will only add to an overflow, but I don't think we are there quite yet. I think there is a worrying trend with the way Riot is introducing new champions to the game that needs to be addressed. What is worrying to me is this trend of adding completely new game mechanics that are only specific to certain champion(s).

**NOTE: **The rough TLDR is bolded in one of the paragraphs below for those who do not want to read the entire post.

We all know there are 5 different roles in the game, but there are also different sub-roles or role sub-types rather. While there are many heros that can be played as a Marksman, Mid Laner, Top laner, Jungler, or Support, there is still some lacking in some role sub-types that seems to limit players options in a competitive context at least. Here, I refer to role sub-type as a sub-type of champions that all belong to a particular role but also fulfill a particular role for their team. I'm a mid laner, so how I think of it is that there are your High Damage Teamfight Control Mages, Medium Damage Mid-Range Control Mages, Supportive Control mages, Assassins, Long Range Poke, etc. And that's just for mid lane as an example. I think that it's important to continue introducing champions to some sub-types, because it is very limiting when 2-3 of bans can completely wipe the most viable options for a given sub-type.

  • Think back to Ryze, Azir, Viktor mid lane meta Azir Ryze Viktor . These were champions that if you asked me, fit under the High Damage Teamfight Control Mage sub-type. But if all three of these champions were banned, suddenly teams didn't really want to build a composition around that sub-type of mid laner anymore. This is most nearly because either there weren't enough champions to choose from in that sub-type at the time, or the other options that were there weren't deemed to be good enough to be played competitively. This is an example of why I think it is necessary for Riot to continue adding new champions, because this is not a problem specific any sub-type or even any role.

As I mentioned before, the worrying part of the trend with Riot's new champions is the addition of game mechanics that are specific only to certain champion(s). Here, I will try to explain what exactly I mean when i say "new mechanic."

  • I think of grounded as being one of these game mechanics that, while is currently available to two champions Singed Cassiopeia , for the longest time was only available to one Cassiopeia . Grounded is an effect that cannot be replicated by any champion besides Cassiopeia and Singed, so this is an example of what I mean by "new mechanic." I think that another example is Camille Camille since she has an ultimate that confines a certain champions movements to an area with absolutely no exceptions, and there is no other champion that can replicate this kind of an effect.

  • I think that Zilean Zilean is a good example of a champion that is unique and inventive, but does not necessarily introduce new mechanics to the game. The idea of a stun with double bombs is interesting and unique, but the end result is still a stun and Zilean is certainly not the only champion who has stuns available to him. While there is no other champion that can really revive an ally, I do not think of it as a game mechanic that is specific to Zilean. Since item 3026 guardian angel is an item, this is an effect that can be just about replicated for any other champion in the game. Zilean's ult may operate a bit differently, but the end result is the same.

  • Another example of a champion that is unique and inventive but does not introduce new game mechanics is Talon talon and his wall jumping. While there are no other champions with this exact ability, the ability to jump over walls is not exclusive to Talon alone. He's just much better at it than other champions. And this ability is part of what makes Talon a unique champion from other assassins without giving him his own game mechanic. I could go on with more examples, but I will stop here.

(You can think of the following paragraph as the TLDR paragraph) I think that the problem with the way that Riot is introducing new champions is the way that Riot is giving new champions abilities with effects that are unavailable to any other champion in this game. A lot of the time, when people pick Camille for example, I have to wonder if she is being picked because the Top-Laner actually enjoys playing her or if she is being picked because of how valuable her champion-specific game mechanic is. When champions are introduced this way, it makes champion select more about "What game mechanic do I want to have for this game" rather than **"What champion do I enjoy playing that fills the role sub-type I want it to fill." ** If you ask me, a continuation of this trend will only result in unhealthy game balance. I am not saying Riot should stop making new champions. I am saying that it is very possible to make new, fun, good, and creative champions that are good at providing a certain role to a team WITHOUT giving the champion a new mechanic that is specific to only that champion.

A note to help clarify some confusion: In writing this post, I am not in any way trying to start a debate on any champion in this post. When I mention Camille, I am using her as an example. I am not trying to debate or start a debate as to how broken or well-balanced she is. Thanks for reading!

I see where you are coming from, but I think people have always picked champions for a certain mechanic they enjoyed/needed. I for example will go for a Tristana pick if I want the ability to be mobile in a team fight or I will pick Jhin to bully people out of fights with his ridiculous range on his w and ult. Trist's w reset mechanic is the reason I pick her as Jhin's W and Passive mechanics are the reason I pick him. That's just my thoughts. Well done with the post.

This is basically it.

The main perk of each champion having a unique "gimmick" is that (in an ideal world), every champion is viable because they have access to something no one else does, or at least, in a way that no one else does.

Yeah.. What makes certain champions enjoyable to me is when a certain mechanic can help me not feed my ass off in a game. So like I often pick Trist over Jhin because I don't want to get murdered by a J4. Even though I love Jhin to death it is just more enjoyable to have a mechanic that can keep me alive more more than half a second.

Yes, but you can do that without giving them a unique game mechanic. Like let me use Zed as another example, though I could probably do an example with any champion. His "unique 'gimmick'" is shadows. But I don't consider Zed's shadows as a unique game mechanic that is specific to him alone. The result is something that can deal damage and allow zed to flash/dash/blink/whatever word you want to use to a target location. And this result is not something that only Zed can do. Riot made Zed unique by making the way he does damage/moves around unique.

Referring to the below comment on Tristana, an escape mechanism and a knockback alone with extra auto attack range are not game mechanics that are specific to Tristana.

What I am saying is that the invention of mechanics with an effect that is only available to one champion is bad. Like Camille ultimate. There is no other champion in this game that can confine a champions movements to a small area on the map with absolutely no exceptions. Sure there aren't a lot of examples like Camille for me to choose from YET. But what if we get 10-15 more champions later and each of them has their own ability with an effect that is available to them and them alone?

What if I make a champion that for 10 seconds makes you take a large amount of damage based on the distance you travel? What if I make a champion that can make the entire allied team camouflaged for some amount of time? What if I make a champion that subtracts from your mana pool each time they damage you? I could keep going on, but hopefully you get the point.

I think Camille isn't a great example. Camille's ult is just another take on the "box" that multiple champs have access to. Each being slightly different to fit the mold of each champion. Thresh's Box is essentially the same thing but has different components (obviously). Plus there is an exception to Camille's ult, if she leaves it. Which each box has. J4's Cataclysm confines you with him unless you flash/dash out, Thresh confines without impairment unless you flash out or get impaired by the walls, Yorick's Dark Procession can't be passed over unless you flash or destroy the wall. The only unique thing about Camille's is that you can't flash out of it. It's literally the next step in the design of box.

If they can come up with 15 champions with a unique mechanic for each, it would increase that pool to maybe 20 to 30 out of 150 champions at that point. Ekko's chronobreak, Jayce's acceleration gate, Teemo's Blind dart, Zigg's Satchel Charge, Cass's Petrifying Gaze, Zac's Stretching Strike, Jax's Counter Strike and now Ornn's smithing passive. Unless I'm forgetting a few, most abilities can be categorized into a genre but vary based on thematic and champion.

Yes, I agree. But what I am saying is that this will change if new champions continue to be produced in this manner. I don't think it is a problem yet, but it very well could be with continuation. And thank you!

I actually kind of disagree because they seem to care more about adding, then fixing. If a new champ came out every 6 months at most it wouldn't be a problem if there was monthly update of champions or something. But at times new champions seem to be better versions of "bad/old/weak designs"

I still think it's necessary but I'm not saying that they should ignore older champions.

Honestly, I disagree. Most new champs are more about their role than their special unique mechanics. When people play Camille, they don't just play her because she can lock people in the thunderdome (and anyway, J4 can already do basically the same thing). The problem is that whenever a new champ comes out without super new mechanics, like Aurelion Sol, Kled, Xayah, or Rakan, people in the community complain, call the champ boring or a mashup of other champions, and other stupid crap. When it's fun to make new mechanics, more popular to make new mechanics, and new mechanics allows you to make a champion with more clearly defined strengths, it's more understandable why new champions often come out with abilities that few other champions have.

You can make new mechanics without giving champions game mechanics that are specific to them alone. Aurelion Sol, Xayah, and Rakan are all exempt from what I mean by new game mechanics. Here, I'll use Aurelion Sol as an example: There is no other champion in this game that can make a ball the size of your screen that stuns everything in it and can travel across the whole map. However, this is still not a unique game mechanic. There are plenty more champions that can use stuns, aoe stuns, and travel with high mobility across the map. Aurelion Sol is different in the way that she does these things, and if something is over powered about it then you simply nerf Asol. And you buff Asol if it's the other way around. But there is no unique game mechanic that Aurelion Sol has . The same goes for Rakan. You could make an argument about Xayah, but it's really a moot point if you ask me.

The biggest problem with new champions is guys like Ekko. There really is so few reason to choose Diana over him unless she is over tuned. That is the problem I have with new champs mostly to me. A lot of times I feel like they are reskins of old designs.

A statement i would like to make, not too many champions came out since the MYMU, and it would be pretty hard to shoehorn "Grounded" Into most of the VGUs, so for that example, it is fair to note that it is a relatively new thing, as is brittle. I am sure we will see more of both in the future.
