theres no mana pots theres no good AP mana regen items theres no good mana items until a full item / getting tear or catalyst then they made it harder to last hit with autos (i like this but it sucks for most AP champs)

There’s tons of mana sustain. Kinda. Enchanter supports build Mana Regeneration instead of flat amounts of mana. This lets them poke or heal up small injuries over a long time far better than flat mana, but have a tendency to run out in extended trades or long team fights. The reason mid lane mages are kept away from that is if you could build a mix of the two and not loose damage, you could effectively never run out, something that mages are balanced around. Heck, even archangel staff that refunds 15% of all mana cost and give 1500 mana you’ll run out... eventually. But if mages did reach infinite mana, we are talking about an Ori who ult younon cooldown becAuse she can use it as pole after building 45% CDR and ult hat. Mana is suppose to run out for a good reason.

As for pots. They used to have mana potions, but removed them because of this balancing nightmare that spawned from them.

Right now all we got is Corrupting potion. Which besides A-Sol don’t know many other good Mage users.

makes sense actually, thanks for this

Following off from what he said, it would be a good idea to learn how to properly manage your mana in lane. Doing will save you a ton of headaches.

its not usually a problem for me, but sometimes it happens to everyone and it sucks

Some AP champs have longer CD or lower cost and this isn't a big deal, but some champs really struggle early with lack of mana.

Mana came way before all this CDR.

Mana pots were removed because they were more effective on certain champs, rather than other - no balancing nightmare.

But my only gripe is mages being the only class that has to recall late game.

ADC's find something to life steal off of

Fighters and Bruisers build hella health regen

Tanks use Warmogs

Gunblade assassins just omnivamp

AD assassins can build D Dance or Ravenous

Even Evelynn can just use her passive to regen to a decent amount.

Mages and other heavy mana users kinda suffer from the fact that if they run oom OR get chunked out, they're actually out of the fight.

Edit: Thinking about it, it makes Blue Buff that much more precious to them.

Catalyst?

And item 3802

Krytoric2 votes

catalyst is fine, but most champs dont really get much from it, and catalyst gives mana off of getting hit.

item 3802 is decent - but i dont like the items it builds into anymore, most dont feel that great.

build a tear, don't upgrade unless it goes late

You forgot to mention the most important change. This applies also to the comments down. IF MAGES HAVE NO MANA THEY WILL HAVE TO RECALL. While the rest roles get a sustain of some sort. Tanks have a portable fountain with warmongs, adc have both access to lifesteal to make them draingods and to mana regen through reaver (mind you late game has better mana regen than the catalyst ones) , and supports buy items that have mana regen/healer supps can also heal themselves.

Yes mages now have big mana pools BUT ONLY IF THEY BUY seraphs. And if they do buy it they forfeit their mid and early game.

Tanks have a portable fountain with warmongs

Tanks have similar issues as mages, they have nearly no impact without abillities so if they run out of mana, they need to back wether they have warmongs or not. It's the main reason for why i always get mask, the catalyst passive is just so imprtant for the mana sustain.

Yea, i feel like they need to work on that a bit. item 3285 could stand to loose some early damage on the proc in exchange for some missing mana restor upon hitting champs with it, not enough to mindlessly spam but enough to keep the poke comming, else it's more a snowball item rather than a poke item. I also miss the the catalyst on item 3030 , and such a powerfull active to catch people on a good agressive rush item might be problematic in coordinated play.

Overall, it's sad that RoA now once again is the only Catalyst item with AP.

The mage update was basically a nerf lmao. Oh man, I've just completely stopped playing AP mid. It's not worth it.

There are a couple runes that help with direct mana sustain, such as Manaflow Band in the Sorcery tree and Presence of Mind in the Precision tree (I wouldn't consider things like Biscuit Delivery to be a mana sustain option).

Occasionally, you might start the game with Corrupting Potion, which gives okay mana sustain. It's a good starting item if you want to opt a more harass and early aggression focused lane approach to start your game (it has health regen, mana regen, and some burns). I have a personal bias for Corrupting Potion start myself on some of the champs I play.

Other than that, there are 3 typical mana starting items you can rush if you need mana. If you are someone as special as Ryze who literally needs mana (by having a mana kit that requires you to spam) and actually use Archeangle's Staff or some oddballs who like to use Muramune/Muramana, prepare to stack the Tears of the Goddess. If you're going to trade more often against your lane opponent, get Catalyst. If you just wanna sit back and play the poke and farm game, get Lost Chapter. Or if you think you really starve on mana like Ryze typically is, get at least 2 of them or even all 3; but only if you actually build something out of them otherwise it's a waste of gold, which I should't need to tell you.

item 1056

LyingOnLine1 votes

Guess what?

We had that for the longest time, and mages would stack it and blue buff in order to run out of mana approximately never.

Riot changed AP items around literally for exactly the outcome to happen.

GigglesO1 votes

How the fuck do you run out of mana with mana flow band. I literally never see mages run out of mana unless they are braindead spamming their spells.
