I don't like generalist supports
and I think that riot should shift them to being more individually unique
support tends to be a fairly limited role already so when you have the ones that just do everything asked of them and sometimes more they tend to crowd out anyone else, far worse than generalist solo laners IMO. we're seeing it right now with
probably being the traditional supports that stand over everyone else right now, occasionally cycling between
(Nami seems to be the one that's least complained about when she's top tier, though).
is definitely a specialist but she's so good at it that other peel-oriented supports like
can't really be justified picks most of the time, but tbh I think that's more a problem with Taric's rework even if Janna's kit is awful
riot if you ever get to doing a support rework you should take more care to have more supports specialize in something or do something that's completely unique to them. i feel like there's not really a team comp where the enchanter supports aren't all interchangeable based on whichever one is just a stronger champion at the time.
have most of the same strengths between poke, shielding/healing, MS boosts and hard CC. hell, Lulu and Nami both give you on-hit effects too. (i think Sona does with her Q aura?) right now the only other reason to pick one besides being the best is because you like them more.
I think
has much of the same generalist issues as above but he's also very unique between his E's mobility and his stasis, as well as shrine giving him some leeway to roam. riot's been working to play up his role as the best roaming support, with how they've been buffing his chime rewards last patch and now the current PBE cycle probably turning him into a secondary carry. he's the only enchanter i'd say actually deviates from what the others do, enough that he has unique cases where he's the best choice.
tank supports, I feel, differentiate themselves fairly well.
is best for aggressive team comps/kill lanes,
is the best cockblock for assassins and
has good resilience to poke + counter-engage.
tl;dr make these guys stand out more and we'd probably see more of them be played simultaneously
