Am i the only one that likes the "new" rune/mastery system?

I know this might catch some flak seeing how there were two posts reminiscing about the good old rune pages with 100+ up votes but i gotta say i can't remember the old rune system being so great as people make it out to be now.

I've been playing since S1 and i hardly remember the old runes and masteries which makes me realize that they weren't really that exciting to begin with.

First lets remember that you had Tier 1 to Tier 3 runes and they all costs IP points, meaning that new players had a clear disadvantage compared to someone who's been investing their IP or RP in runes, not that great in my opinion but what do i know.

Next let's talk about the DIVERSITY that the runes provided. People seem to forget that Red,Yellow and Blue were basically specialized runes

Red was things like AD Yellow was hp/armor Blue was MR/Mana Regen etc.

There were technically red armor runes or yellow damage runes but they would literally give 1/3 of the stats so the diminishing returns made it so that you more or less always had damage/armpen red, armor/hp yellow and mr blue, there was no point in going full armor for example since you'd be giving up like 10 AD and 10MR for extra 5 Armor or something, so i can't really remember the blissful diversity that some board members remember so clearly.

You had Quintessences which were essentially major runes that would add some diversity into the mix like adding some %MS or %crit chance instead of damage but that was mostly it.

Mastery pages had some similar issues i feel, i've been an ADC main since forever so i can't speak for other classes but your choices mostly came down to the last 3 keystones, everything before that was just +4% ARpen and +12% AS, nothing to write home about honestly.

The not so new mastery/rune system might not be perfect but i can't be the only one thinking that it actually provides more unique and interesting things than the old one, Lethal Tempo, Summon Aery, Arcane Comet, Hail of Blades, Glacial Augment, Unsealed Spellbook, Kleptomancy, Conqueror, biscuit delivery, magical footwear, gold lending, ghost poros, overheal, demolish, hextech flash, ultimate hunter etc. These are all things that didn't exist back then, as far as i remember every class had their main tree and dipped slightly in one of the other two and that was mostly just pure stats except for the last runes like Thunderlords which is the new Electrocute.

I mean i feel like i'm gonna get blasted to hell with downvotes just please explain to me first what exactly are you missing since i really can't see how the old rune/mastery system was so DIVERSE and fun (except for the 1% crit rune ofc)

You’re not the only ones. I prefer the new user-friendly ones compared to the old ones. The ease of access, the simplified keystones, the lack of unneeded complexity, and that they are FREE, makes it easily superior in my opinion.

You're not the only one The old runes and masteries were really confusing to me and i never bothered to learn what's the best to use on which champ etc The new runes are so much more simple so i love them

So you prefer the new masteries because they're more powerful, not because the system has a better design.

Also, the old runes were more customizable than the current runes.

The only people who don't like them are just blinded by nostalgia and refuse to actually think about them.

The new system basically removed runes meaning YOU SHOULD NOT COMPARE IT TO THE OLD RUNE SYSTEM but the mastery system. They also ignore facts like the old masteries HAD MORE DAMAGE in them.

The old system has not diverse at all. Like I remember I had one standard page since so many champions used basically the same ones.

5 more armor? I had an armor page with around 40 armor 34 mr page 400 hp at 18 page I had a 800+ mana at 18 page for ryze and kassadin Brand and malz had 20 mpen and some hp pure crit for the GP and mundo lulz None of that is counting my masteries And yes I would take 3 armor over damage in a bad matchup

The old runes and masteries let you do what you want

New ones not even close I had FUN PAGES. Remeber that, when this game was fun? I had pure tank pages, pure offense pages I had meta pages

Now its just heres some damage, heres more damage. Heres some damage over time Heres 5 hp

Oh crap, I got counter picked hard, Swap to sustain runes or defense runes to survive and come online. Now runes and masteries add nothing to helping cover a champion or your weaknesses

As someone who only owned like, AD/AP/AS Reds, Hp and scaling HP yellows, and MR blues, with MS, AD, and AP Quints, despite playing the game heavily since season 2 start, I vastly prefer the new runes over the old ones.

That said, I will not deny the advantages the old system has over the new system. And while the new system is more fun and cooler, it has without a doubt lend to a metric fuck ton of imbalance issues.

Nah you're not alone. The new system is much better, not to mention much fairer since it's not lock behind IP/Blue Essence anymore.

Old runes were boring, but also "balanced". Through last 2 years game is in this "one-hot fiesta" because of runes. If Riot wanted to update them more, then maybe I wouldn't have any problems with them. But somehow, they acting like everything is ok, that we don't need more defensive options, etc.
