I feel like Irelia's W should power up the more damage she reduced with it.

Instead of powering up with charge time.

I get that she should get more out of it by holding it, but the longer damage reduction and empowered through damage would do that already.

Just seems lame that it lets her keep the move going through hard cc with literally not interaction between her opponent's response and the move's effect.

i agree, when i saw the videos of her blocking kat and swain ult i was like "wow, she is taking all the damage they are doing to her and throwing it back at them. thats so cool". but now that i know that enemy interaction has no impact on the w its more like sion q, where you use it and just hope they dont mover out of range but better since unlike sion she becomes cc immune during her w.

i can see irelia using the same tactic sion does and just charging what should be a parry/reflect in a bush outside of vision for max damage on an unsuspecting target. i dont think that play style is very fun either, i would rather react to incoming damage an be rewarded for it instead of the reward being the same on every cast so long as i hold it and dont die.

Technically speaking she is more Ornn unstoppable (obviously not now but before) and not Olaf unstoppable. With Ornn W all the CC was applied to you with its full duration and if it was still present after the W ended you were still CCed. Irelia works the same way as shown in one of the clips. Olaf straight up doesn't get "debuffed" at all during Ragnarok. That being said if Irelia starts charging W and you throw a morg binding at her during the W she will STILL be rooted when it ends.

i think chargetime is far better. With your suggestion she could just reduces Veigar w or ult damage with a small click and instantly after chuncks your health. Like how it is now she has realy have to make a big breake between the whole bladedancing and with a longer break she comes with more energy out of it again. She is not a magical Colosus like Galio who absorbs damage.

Imo, this would reward smart use of the skill and precise timing. In it's current iteration the skill will always yield the same amount of utility and power regardless of what it's used against. i.e.: It'll be just as powerful against all sorts of dives, stuns, etc, rather than be used against key abilities for powerful reversals. I feel like the current iteration of the skill might be a little too consistent instead of having a "success condition" like Fiora's parry when hit with hard cc.

Not every Ability needs to have a huge success condition. And at Fiora it makes sense, she actualy parries an attack with her Riposte cause she is a Duelist. Irelia is basicly an Artist with her Bladedance and all she does during w is rest and chill down a bit. Similar to Master Yi w (but his is weaker according to his Mains cause CC has a stronger effect on him). The w should clearly be not a main focus on her kit, q, e and r are the important abilitys that define her. While Fiora gets defined more by w together with q and r and less by her e for exampel. Galios Kit is centered around all Abilitys basicly but less around e as it is slow and predictabel. Still HE WAS the one that soaks in Damage duringa taunt and returned the Damage with old Ult and now IS a champion that can move slowly during w but taunts after and not during it and also just for taunt duration and not damage. Riot proberbly thinkts it is not fair for a non Ultimate to return so strong and regularly heavy damage in short time rather than from long casts absed on the player who decides the outcome after all.

The problem is this would maker her way stronger in low elo than high, and potentially make her more difficult to balance.

"Grace bends, where strength breaks." -- her interaction with Darius.

The idea of absorbing an attack is the idea you're getting at, but Irelia doesnt absorb the attack, she dances around it and redirects it into your face. It fits thematically.

Häxel1 votes

no, she dances around like a katarina and ignoring damage, than throw her blades in one direction. Damage is increased with the momentum how long she dances with the blades, where is no redirecting as a whole cause Irelia just interacts with her blades and the blades with her and not she or the blades with an enemy. What comes between her and her blades is just unlucky dead meat but she uses her w as a shield - charge attack, not a counterattack.

why on earth would you want an ability that stops damage then throws back a bunch of it? aren't we trying to lessen the creep?

Cowgirl Ed1 votes

Yeah and maybe add on top of that a passive that gives her AD and AP every minion killed by her team mates

GrReaper961 votes

Agreed. Just remove the charging damage and make it so she dishes back a percentage of the damage she reduced

Wînter Fox1 votes

It's to make it versatile, so she can use it offensively or defensively. Her W would be useless if her opponent was running away or stunned, which would suck for a kit that's focusing around chasing running opponents and stunning.

Perhaps it's there to help her duel tanks (which if you look at a lot of top laners, there's a lot of things in there to help duel). A tank doesn't dish out a lot of damage so having part of her damage output be dependant on what here enemy dishes out makes it really bad against tanks.

And as far as other examples, we got camille true damage Q, Fiora %max health true damage passive, pretty much every tank (ornn, sion, poppy, gragas, maokai, galio) all having % max health damage sources in their kits, darius true damage (and innate armour pen), garen having natural armour shred, jax having hybrid damage (which makes him actually impossible to remove as a damage threat), bruisers like wukong and jarvan having % armour shreds. Even Yorick was given % health damage on his E (Yeah you probably forgot that one guy didn't you).

There are ones that don't have any tools to beat up tanks, like pantheon or kennen or jayce or kayle but they fill their own specific niches (early game bullying/range) and still have ways to scale offensively to beat up tanks (lethality builds)

My Waifu Vanilla1 votes

Not saying it is as strong as others, but both Kayle and Jayce also shred resists (Jayce with cannon form first auto and Kayle with passive).

flibitydoo1 votes

Ah I forgot about Jayce's passive first hit. Kayle also raises a good point

Pantheons going lethality is also just the universal way to play him now (and even back then going brutalizer->black cleaver armour pen build was a thing) and kennen has always built haunting guises just because his base values are too good.

Actually come to think about it there really aren't any. Going back to Camille she also has % health damage on tactical sweep. Renekton has Fury empowered Dice which shreds armour (and is also just a big old lane bully), nasus has spirit fire as well as infinitely scaling damage, yasuo has his ult (and crit steroid), trundles ult is the ultimate counter to a tank.

Aatrox is probably one of the few that doesn't have any tools to rip a tank apart, but he has amazing no-item sustain which is a counter. Same with vladimir.

Infernape1 votes

So Kayle's original W?

Malicious Metal1 votes

Not really, because a spell like that reads extremely poorly and will just make people stop attacking her altogether and THEN blow all their damage on her.

Bhagswag1 votes

Like Kayle ult?

I mean we all know how disgusting that can be if used well.

Jackin ur lawn1 votes

Because if they did that (which would be very cool) she would always be banned because it would be more or less op af and there's too many players who don't want to learn to work around it lol.

haaaaaaalp1 votes

That would make her more matchup dependent and less healthy overall.
