MMR Balance Issues

Is it me or is the matchmaking system flawed? Going into a ranked game, the match I was put in gave us an overall MMR of 1325, against our enemie's overall MMR of 1438. 100 MMR difference can be a big deal in the lower tiers. Their team consisted of a Gold 4 player, 2 Gold 5 players, and 2 Silver 1 players. Our's consisted of 2 Gold 5 players (one of which was me), a Silver 2, Silver 3, and a Bronze 1 player. Long story short the Bronze player was supposed to be a support, chose Tryndamere, went 3/13/2, screwed over everyone else, and went on to rage and curse everyone out on the team. So how does matchmaking let this happen? Is it a common flaw in the system where someone is in a place where they shouldn't be? Is it a duo queue?

i think its pretty shit right now. im smurfing in gold as a diamond player and get players that intentionally lose or just all feed tremendously or complete stomps.

I understand that it's inevitable to get players like these at lower tiers and it's almost unheard of in high tiers. My only conundrum is the question of a Bronze player getting into a high division silver and gold team.

They almost certainly duoed with one of the Silvers. You can look them up on a site like op.gg and see if they have repeatedly played with any of those players.

Also possible (though less likely) that their MMR is significantly than B1 and they've just had really shitty luck in promos.

Edit:

Also,

Third-party sites are estimating players' MMR. These estimates can be wildly inaccurate.

The third party site was in fact op.gg, but the divisions and tiers are enough evidence of the mismatch

What was your Diamond account again?

Rank doesn't mean much (if you are close in rank to someone else) because their mmr may be higher or they may be on a winstreak. Additionally, someone is probably duoing and/or trolling (and actually really good at the game aka pulling mmr up but staying in bronze). I dont know the specifics of the match in question, but i think the ranked system is very good if you play enough, so games like this become insignificant in the long scheme of things.

Edit: also ive played arams/normals with much higher differences and still win; its just an estimate so dont let it define you or others. use the estimates of mmr to try to notice improvement - nothing more, nothing less

While you do bring up a good argument that these matches are insignificant in the long run, they still do matter in the short run. I don't think it's fair that a player should have to hope he isn't in a disadvantaged situation with the type of team he gets. All-in-all this also brings up the argument of why duo queue should be eliminated. Reason being that duo queue ends upputting people in places where they really shouldn't be at in the first place.

To me ranked isnt about winning though. This means when i am disadvantaged I take it like a test to move up in mmr because all i am doing is trying to improve. Back when i really started playing this game i was at like 1000 mmr in arams. It took me more than 200 games to get to 1300ish even though I thought I was much better; in fact i knew i was better. Whenever i got into that 1500 match I felt so excited cuz i had finally made it and i was improving. Usually right after that 1500 match i would drop right back to 1300 and it was super annoying because i would win 2 out of 3 at 1500. After many games I now sit at 1700-1900 easily and cherish when i get to play with a diamond (even if they arent tryharding). I still think that the 1300 mmr games were the hardest games i had to play if I had to rise again from 1000. For the most part aram matchmaking is similar to ranked matchmaking and my main point is that ranked should be about trying to IMPROVE, not WIN. If you have this viewpoint then only the long term matters cuz it will take a long time to improve and, as a result, you will never get caught up with "disadvantaged" teams because you won't see them as disadvantaged. In some of my aram games my 1300 teams were better than the 1600 enemy team we played against. The higher in arams i got the less i cared about mmr differences since I started to realize that every game was winnable even when most of my arams, and the chances of winning them, were based on team comps and not as much on skill anymore. I started to not even pay attention to the kills ratio between teams either because, like the rift, the game can be decided in a moment and throwing happens every 2 minutes. Again, I started to not care about mmr because every game became winnable no matter how bad the game's start went. I am now applying this to normals and I have seen my mmr steadily rise.

In regards to your duo q point i actually think that duo-q makes ranked harder unless both of the players doing it are above (in mmr) where they are (in rank) since riot takes this into account in matchmaking and places them against tougher opponents or other duo q's.

One account I looked at that i found interesting was one with the name: future doctor. He started ranked not too long ago and started at 1270ish and in 4 days got to gold 1 100 lp when i last checked. In his first game he played with people around 1270 but his second game he played against high silvers, the next he played high silvers and some golds, his third and fourth games were against many low golds and this was all when he just got placed at around 1270 which is around silver 4. By the time he got to the next rank he was playing with people in gold. This is NOT imbalance in matchmaking for either team as noted by his continuous rise all the way to gold 1.

This is intentional. There is usually a difference between the teams. The red side (top side) has higher average mmr on their team because of a slight disadvantage. You will also face slightly higher mmr players if your team has a duo and the enemy team does not.

What's the point of it though? What is the point of a system that's initially supposed to place you against similar players to then intentionally place you against players or a team that's not similar and stronger than you?
