League of Legends Logic: Becoming A Better Player

Tip #1 : Learn As Many Champions As Possible

In order to make educated decisions in game, you first need to understand what the enemy does. Take the time to play a large variety (if not all) of the champions in the game. Common advice for climbing is to only play a few champions however this is actually a huge strangle hold. Learning how to itemize and mechanically play as many different champions not only gives you more options in champion select, it also helps you decide if and how you can outplay your enemies.

Tip #2: Don't Be Afraid To Fail

Practice is the first step to improving at anything and League of Legends is no different. If you are unsure whether or not you will be able to win against the opposing enemies JUST TRY IT. If you fail your team might be upset or even insult you, but now you have a sound judgement for future games. Failing also allows you to look back at how you can play differently. For example: "If I warded that bush maybe I would have won that fight", "If I used my abilities in another order maybe that fight would work differently", "If I wasn't pushed to the enemy tower perhaps I wouldn't have died to that gank and killed both of the enemies", or "I forgot to use my item active, that might have helped me a lot back there!". There are limitless possibilities and the only way to improve quickly is to take risks and analyze how you can fix your mistakes.

Tip #3: Maintain Your Map Vision

League of Legends is a team game and as such you have to constantly be thinking about ways that you can improve the odds for your teammates. If you see there's no vision around the map, it doesn't hurt to roam and give your teammates your trinket ward. A roam from Top to Mid lane might cost you a few minions, however that is a small price to pay when you prevent the enemy team from getting 300g off that Mid lane kill. As a Jungle player, securing the crabs when you believe the enemy might gank can also help restrict enemy movement. You should be purchasing pink wards at least 3 or 4 times a game. Currently they are an underestimated asset but the amount of information they provide yourself and your team is super valuable. Supports used to be the key role for providing vision however now it's EVERYONE'S JOB to help light up the map.

Tip #4: Never Be a Hero, Always Be a Savoir

There's that meme that's been around a while now with the Lee Sin who can't resist his urges to go in on every single Q he lands.. While this is hilarious, it's exactly the way you don't want to play. The vast majority of players in League of Legends (that I've played with and umm even myself xDDD) are super prone to aggressive play styles and tendencies. Everyone wants to be that hero who carries their team but this is a very bad and impulsive method of playing. Instead of being the hero, learn to be a savior for your team. Do your best farming instead of trying to constantly damage the enemy. Always be ready to help your team even if you don't believe it will end well. When Lee Sin's body is telling him yes and you see him go flying in.. be there to help him get out if needed. Put down your damage, CC, poke, and help contribute as much as you can to any fight even if it means you will miss minion kills. Things won't always work out but even the worst situation can be turned around with a little luck if you are there for your team.

Tip #5 Laugh At Your Team's Mistakes (To Yourself.. xDD)

Maintaining a positive attitude when you aren't having fun is a really difficult thing. Everyone on your team is feeding, you can't win your own lane, and the Jungler never ganks for you. Trust me, everyone has those feelings sometimes. Instead of dwelling on those things it's much better to instead chuckle to yourself at how badly things are going and consider what you can do NOW to help you improve for your next game. Learning while at a disadvantage ALWAYS HELPS YOU IMPROVE MASSIVELY. For example, let's say you are really struggling to kite. Learning to orb walk and kite against a champion who is fed and can kill you in two hits will put you miles up on the skill ladder. Next game the enemies won't be fed and you'll mow right down on them. This goes for just about every aspect of League including learning how to farm minions. Learning how to farm creeps in extremely difficult match ups makes it way easier to farm them in easier ones.

While learning a wide variety of champions is a good thing, it's also important to play a SMALL amount of champions VERY WELL.

Yes, you could try to play every top laner in the game, but you'd have to invest your time into each one of them when it could be spent mastering just 2 or 3.

With this in mind, try to either pick a few champions that can fill opposing roles,

such as 1 high damage carry Fiora and 1 heavy utility tank Maokai,

or a champion that is very versatile Ekko and cam fill multiple roles on his own,

so you can always suite what your team needs.

I'd argue that depending on which champions you pick, you can almost completely skip learning champions.

Just by playing champions who spend very little time in the fight, via high burst and mobility, you can seriously just play your champion very well, because champions with those two traits naturally dominate half of the champion pool, purely by design.

You are coming from the point of someone who has played for years... These tips are for people who want to learn the game, not for people who already understand the game. When someone starts playing this game they have no idea what the enemy does and that's the number one thing you need to understand. It doesn't matter if you are Talon or Zed, if you don't understand that Warwick's R locks you down and you walk into that, you are probably still going to die. lol

except to learn a champion is to play them. You don't need that much understanding of other champion's kits on some champions to beat them. Burst and mobility on some champions allows them to never lose the initiative in a fight. Which means simply knowing their move pool is enough to outplay them, because you force them into reactionary play, by virtue of the tools at your disposal.

Learn as many champions as possible? No. Learn everything you can about a handful of champions and master them specifically. Become a dedicated main and watch your win rate increase.

Don't be afraid to fail? No, you should always maintain a sense of caution, it keeps you alive. You win by staying alive.

Maintain your map vision? Close, but no cigar. Ward the areas near you, you are responsible for you. Missing out on a wave just because your mid lane doesn't know how to ward properly is dangerous and costly.

Always be a savior? No, no, no, a thousand times no!. You help your team by staying alive. Listen to your instincts that warns you when something people on your team is doing is a bad idea. Them dying is bad. You dying with them is worse.

  1. Learning more and more champions statistically lowers your chances of winning. Being familiar with a champion by facing them is a much more consistent way to learn them because you gain both experience with what they do and playing against them as your chosen champion.

  2. Its not so much "don't be afraid to fail" as it is "don't think you're required to get ahead". The first step of performing better than average is essentially 'showing up to your job'. Just do what you have to, which is farm and don't die. That's the one crucial step that so many players seem to miss. They over-emphasize aggression, and fall behind in farm even though they're zoning the enemy. **You should enter every match-up with the intention to out-farm the enemy, not kill them/force them out of lane. ** Trading-Stance is essential for this.

  3. Even more than 3-4 pinks per game, usually. Old wards used to last 3 minutes, didn't reveal stealth, and still cost 75g. New pink wards cost 75, reveal stealth, and last until someone destroys them. There's no reason not to buy them, really. You should always have one out on the map. All times.

  4. Almost only applies to dive champs/assassins. A better 'tip' would have been to describe what pressure is and how to safely apply it via the threat of CC/damage via zoning. Not going in because they entered range, but going in when they can be considered legitimately out of position. Waiting for someone else to make the play doesn't work out. Especially below Diamond 2.

5)You don't even need a positive attitude. You just need an objective one. This is harder to lean toward the winning side depending on the champ that you play, but if you yourself can farm effectively and not get shut down in that regard, your team actually has a decent chance of coming out of almost any situation unless they're feeding to the point where nothing would really change the outcome. Why? Because there's always one important glass-cannon champion in the game, and you can help take that person down if you aren't behind in gold; that's pivotal to success in League. Get your team fed off of them.
