Looking for pointers on laning against Riven top
This isn't a "Riven is OP" thread.
I just have a hard time reading the character, when I should go in, who I should play and what I should build.
Any tips are appreciated.

I like Mordekaiser against her personally, Renekton and Fiora can also be good.
Thing with Riven is that her third Q is the beginning of her combo normally. Keep an eye out for when she is going to do the third Q jump. That is also almost all of her mobility if she has to E shield dash in to get you with the jump knock Q..... You want to play someone who is fairly tanky or has good sustain. Preferably someone who can poke from a distance with low CD. Like Mordekaiser. He can also dish out some major damage to anyone who comes in close while gaining a lot of shield from his W, E, and Qs.
Fiora is good against her because if you time the W well you can turn the combo against Riven easily, throwing off their entire combo and throwing them off their game entirely if you capitalize on the almost assured stun.
Riven excells in short burst battles, with low cooldowns she is able to combo faster than most, playing a champion similar to Renekton who can force the fight to go on longer than she wants by coming after her and putting in their own damage will make her less likely to go in as often, and good sustain will ensure her poking is minimal.

I wanted to try out
as a top lane character. Would you recommend it if I have a hard time against Riven? If so, what should I watch out for and/or build.
Kled is not very strong against riven because she out damages him and destroys him if his passive gets popped. Also don't play fiora into riven unless you are very very comfortable on her. Riven does a shit ton more damage then her early. And good rivens won't use 3rd q in trades because of how telegraphed it is unless fiora already used riposte. Mord is good and so is renekton. Tanky champs like malph naut and Mao are good because offer your first back when you get some armor she loses a lot of kill pressure. Poppy just shits on riven unless the riven is a God tier riven main. Renekton is a skill matchup unless you go even where after 3 he outscales until around level 13 and riven has a few items. Then she passes gets stronger then him again. Ranged champs mess her up until six but then she just jumps on them and kills them.
is a classic counter to her.
Don't build the full-damage build though. Classic tanky garen.
(situational item)
If you do go one damage item in additon to sunfire, I would say Black Cleaver for it's mixing pot of desirable stats.
Please stop telling people this. It's flat out not true. Unless the riven player is shit at riven garen just loses lane against her. I can't even count the amount of people who pick garen into riven just to feed because they think it's a counter. Pick poppy or naut or someone equally tanky. Don't try to hardcore trade with her on low damage tanks until you get your first armor item. Start either cloth 4 or dorans shield and get tabis early and then health. It makes trading early for her very dificult because of the amount of damage is based on her aa. Riven has a very hard time killing tanks until she has black cleaver and last whisper. The most important thing about playing against her is pinging Mia's and not dying. An even riven is a behind riven. She has to snowball to do the shit that she can do.
If you want you can add me in game and I will run some practice lanes with you and give you tips.

this is a misconception. since garens rework, riven is a skill matchup.
if the riven is halfway decent, youre not going to get any damage at all on her. she alone decides if a trade happens or not.
main reason is, that she can either dash out of his q animation and absorb the damage with her shield, or she can interrupt it with the stun on her w.
so she has two tools to counter the attempt to open a trade on her. you cant get a spin on her if you dont silence her, and you cant reliably silence her since decisive strikes animation is so slow that it gives her enough time to react to it and disengage before you get it off.
