Y'know.... Smite has a Sandbox mode....

Here's a list of things you can do:

  • You can choose what level you level up to.
  • You can fight an AI enemy that levels as you do.
  • You can test your mettle against jungle camps.
  • You can test champions/Gods before you actually buy them.
  • You can test your CSing and wave clearing skills.
  • You can buy items with nearly unlimited gold.

And this is bad because.....?

Because you feel like you have to play it for weeks before you go into a real match.

Well, some people may.

Actually, I don't think I've ever met someone who thought they had to spend even an hour in a training mode/introduction in a video game outside of hardcore fighter/RTS players. I think most people I've ever met when I ask them if they want to practice just ask or me to describe the controls at most, if not that they just jump into a game and figure it out.

As a Smite player it was nice testing the new god I hadn't played yet before ruining a game for 4 other players. I usually spent like 10 minutes just seeing how I can interact with creeps and such. And people when they rage don't actually use the "GO BACK TO SANDBOX" phrase they think exists, they just tell you to uninstall or to kill yourself like in every other game. Honestly that'd be more of a constructive criticism than most insults you see, but nope every piece of toxicity in smite is due to the sandbox and having it would destroy League.

Smite also has a real Mastery system that unlocks rewards for playing the character you like. As does Heroes of the Storm.

But far be it from us to expect Riot to do things that make sense just because other games do.

Upvoted to keep the Sandbox discussion alive. Upvote all sandbox threads everyone! Even if they disagree with it. Let it still be noticed. >:-D

Riot doesn't want new/casual players to feel forced to "practice"/grind in the mode.

I personally don't think we need a sandbox mode, but the reason Riot is using is weak. You could literally put up a screen when the mode is selected stating that you don't have to do this. It's a tool for you to use if you want to, just like if you want to learn how to draw. You can go on and do your own thing and self-teach, or you can go take some classes, read some books on perspective, etc. Not every new artist feels pressured to take drawing classes just because others did. Just my 2 cents.

It's bad because they can't make money of it.

Case closed.

It would take effort, and Rito can't do something that makes no money, now can they? Better make more useless chroma skins and rp-costing-icons of Gromp.

unskilledplayer18/8/2015, 8:57:24 AM3 votes

Holy crap.

Goddamn Riot has a lot of problems right now.

Old Man Teeto8/8/2015, 1:43:24 PM2 votes

HotS has one. You can even test any champion and skin in it.

Mad love for Candy King Muradin.

Jolly Rogered8/8/2015, 4:16:32 PM2 votes

That is very nice, I will have to try Smite out. I'm getting bored with LoL.

Demonic Khan8/8/2015, 3:40:32 PM2 votes

If they really think it's going to make noobs spend all of their time there, why not have it available to, say, level 7+ summoners? Yeah, it's kind of pointless, but that's because their argument is invalid. So many other games have sandboxes that people only spend time in when they want to try something new. And if someone wants to spend 10 hours in the sandbox and is having fun doing it, why not leave them be?

Smite is also known as one of the most new-player friendly mobas out there, according to some friends who've played it and other games in the genre.

VITEV0098/8/2015, 7:38:38 PM2 votes

Don't forget DOTA 2 has console commands in private matches. So a sandbox mode as well.

Puri Puri Taric8/9/2015, 12:00:33 AM2 votes

smite has a sandbox mode strife has a sandbox mode dota 2 has a sandbox mode and even hon when im not mistaken 4 less popular games got the most important mode since their beta times gg rito gg.

Doctor Dyment8/9/2015, 2:55:40 AM2 votes

I really wonder why Riot didn't just say "We really don't WANT to do it. So stop asking." I just feel like it would have been... a bit more truthful. People would be angry, but it would be truthful.

Kaipop8/8/2015, 5:15:54 AM2 votes

Heroes of the Storm also has a mode that lets you try heroes/skins in the shop. You can control your level and reset your cooldowns to easily try lots of things.

kaveman898/8/2015, 12:46:39 PM2 votes

yea the only thing riot is gonna keep doing is make new skins champs and balance balance re balance balance the re balance then make more skins....

ImPretty8/10/2015, 11:49:23 AM1 votes

Dota's 'sandbox mode' is just even more fun with the fact that you can spawn everything using commands, even the event bosses and enemies that are gone. Or you can remove cooldowns from everything. It's just stupid fun sometimes creating an army and fighting my friend's army. Dota also now supports custom gamemodes and maps from the workshop. They even made a program for Dota players to create their own maps and weapons to be put into the workshop.

Narasimha8/8/2015, 1:51:15 AM1 votes

Wait... seriously? There is? Seriously, I've gotten to high gold and I've NEVER tried or even heard of it. I think most people just jump into Arena or Siege. They're shorter, and they let you practice against real people.

For Carthage8/8/2015, 4:42:53 AM1 votes

HoTS has that to try out champs and get a feel for what they do.

Then again, they also give you the option to evolve particular skills rather than buy items to increase ratios.

Biff Manly8/8/2015, 5:04:22 AM1 votes

Yup, DotA is adding in a comprehensive sandbox mode in their new beta, wheer you start in just mid lane with waves spawning and pushing back and forth. You can spawn as many enemy champs as you want, give yourself any items and just try things out.

Cerbearus8/8/2015, 11:41:08 AM1 votes

So does Heroes of the Storm

Light Show8/9/2015, 12:07:06 PM1 votes

This kinda shitty excuse like "We want players to learn how to play via normal mm games" is exactly why Dota 2 will always be the master race of MOBAS, why their TI will always be better in every way than our LCS, why their players always come with something new to the table and make everything more spectacular and why they don't have their games ruined by a guy who joins in saying "first time trying out this hero". Cause they have a sandbox mode for all the above.

ParaBellam8/9/2015, 3:41:42 PM1 votes

Because then Riot won't have any profit margins off of people buying champs blindly.

Because you shouldn't be able to dedicate a full day of playing all the champs in the game to know their strengths and weaknesses, so when you play a game you actually know what the hell you're getting into.

Blade of Justic8/10/2015, 1:05:41 AM1 votes

Wow, this thread really exploded.

Well done, everyone

Dr Easter8/8/2015, 12:24:10 AM1 votes

ArcheBlade also has a training mode that is pretty cool. You can start and stop the AI. Makes it nice to learn the game or a specific hero. I may install that game again.
