There may be something wrong with Jhin's crit chance

ADC is my least favorite role, but when I do play ADC I barely ever play anything but Jhin. Currently building crit is the only viable build on him (not really, Jhin is sitting on 47% win rate...), and I started suspecting that there's an inherent issue with Jhin's crit chance that makes even the currently-only-viable crit builds not work properly on him. I usually rush IE first item as Jhin... and I've always felt like my crit chance is far lower relative to having 20% on other ADCs. It may be just my imagination though. Here's what I realized; Firstly, it's important to note this - there's an "anti-luck" system in place: (quote from wiki)

Critical strike chance will adjust dynamically based on the number of basic attack that didn't critically strike. At 30% critical strike chance, if you basic attack without critically striking, your critical strike chance will temporarily be increased to 60%, and if you fail again, it will be increased to 90%, then to 100% if you fail again. The critical strike chance increase will reset whenever you critically strike.

It's possible, again I'm not sure and I may be entirely wrong about this, but if Jhin's fourth shot is regarded as a critical hit, thus resetting his effective crit chance, he gets far less value out of crit chance than other ADCs. He may be cumulating effective crit chance as he's missing his first three shots, then resetting it on his guaranteed fourth shot, and starting from 0 on his next round of four shots. This makes any crit chance below 100% less effective on Jhin, especially on the lower numbers.

Can this get looked into? Again, I may be wrong, but I just don't know anymore.

I don't think so, actually. Let's take your example with 30% chance.

So the worst case for his 4 shots is

  1. Didn't crit -> 60% chance
  2. Didn't crit -> 90% chance
  3. Didn't crit -> 100% chance
  4. Will always crit

This pattern would be exactly the same for every other ADC, since both reach 100% crit every 4. Shot in the worst case.

Now another pattern.

  1. Didn't crit -> 60% chance
  2. Crit -> 30% chance
  3. Didn't crit -> 60% chance
  4. Will always crit

Jhin has a guaranteed crit in this case, while every other ADC would just have a 60% crit chance here and therefore it would be possible that the other ADC just got 1 crit in these 4 shots, while Jhin got 2.

See it that way: the system is just there to guarantee you a crit if you are unlucky and don't crit at all. Getting a crit is the reward here. And Jhin has a guaranteed reward on every 4th shot. Having one crit guaranteed is always a benefit, it doesn't punish you in any way.

Surely it doesn't punish, nor did I argue that it does. I may have needed to put more emphasize on this, but my point here is that building crit chance on Jhin is simply less effective on him relatively to other ADCs (because the fourth guaranteed shot is built into his kit - he doesn't need to build crit in order to get it), granted the system works how I suspect it to, as I explained. He used to work with Lethality until it was gutted. Currently the best build for him is crit, and even with it he's in a very bad spot.

Obviously the argument "crit is less effective" is hard to measure considering Jhin's extra AD% passive (which also comes at the value of AS and so on), but it's a fact that Jhin is currently weak and apparently he's getting buffed soon - all I ask for is to perhaps take a look at a fundamental problem that may fix the issue before jumping to buff his numbers.

Crit adjustment works both ways, so both jhin and not-jhins will settle at the expected number of crits for their crit chance regardless of jhins 4th shot one.

Jhin gets extra scaling for his crit chance built into his passive though, so jhin has >100% effectiveness (he gets the full effect of the crit chance, and also 40% of that additionally converted to AD) from buying crit chance rather than less.

Firstly, thanks for the link it adds some helpful insight I didn't know. But unless I'm missing something, my argument still holds just as true. Considering Jhin's fourth shot is guaranteed to crit without having to build any crit chance, if the system works as I suspect it to, building any further crit that is above 0% and below 100% results in a less effective crit chance compared to other ADCs.

Jhin gets extra scaling for his crit chance built into his passive though, so jhin has >100% effectiveness (he gets the full effect of the crit chance, and also 40% of that additionally converted to AD) from buying crit chance rather than less.

(a copypaste from my other comment) Obviously the argument "crit is less/more effective" is hard to measure considering Jhin's extra AD% passive (which also comes at the value of AS and so on), but it's a fact that Jhin is currently weak and apparently he's getting buffed soon - all I ask for is to perhaps take a look at a fundamental problem that may fix the issue before jumping to buff his numbers.
