Why purchase Mejai's Soulstealer on supports?

On mid laners, this item is acceptable because they can afford to take risks, and since they can farm, it isn't as much of a problem if they are purchasing cost-inneficient items (Mejai is cost-efficient with the initial 5 stacks, but if you can't stack it, then it loses efficiency). They are, after all, one of the main damage sources from the team, and as such, they need to get as much damage as possible and Mejai is extremely good on that regard if you manage to fully stack it.

What I can't understand, however, is why there are people who purchase this on supports. Mejai is one of the worst items to buy on a support, even if he/she has abilities scaling with AP, for a couple of reasons.

The first; it's risky. As a support, you can't afford to waste gold at all; support is the role who has the lowest gold flow. If you can't manage to get stacks and/or you lose them, you just threw away a lot of gold that you could have used to purchase other, better items.

The second; to be able to mantain stacks, Mejai requires that you don't die. This contradicts with one of the support's main goals, which is to die for the team, if necessary, to protect the damage sources (ADC, mid laner, etc) so that they can win the fights. Of course you should try to stay alive if possible, but most of time a dead support is preferable over a dead ADC/mid laner/etc.

The third; Stacking Mejai on a support takes longer, assuming that you don't get any kills, due to the fact that assists only grant 1 stack.

The fourth: there are other, much better AP items, to buy if you plan to build AP on a support. For example, item 3001. Not only it is much more cost-efficient, it also helps the team, due to the magic resistance reduction. You are also guaranteed to mantain the 70 AP no matter how much you die, and the magic resistance is useful if the enemy AP is fed.

The fifth; Even when fully stacked, Mejai's Soulstealer isn't always as benefical as it seems. Most "AP supports" actually have low AP ratios on both their offensive and their defensive spells, so it's likely that the you aren't fully taking advantage of the enormous amounts of AP granted by a fully-stacked Mejai. And if you plan to use it for the cooldown reduction, there are other better items for that purpose.

I go mad when I see someone that says they are going support, then they purchase Mejai and don't even purchase a item 2049. Yes, everyone should be warding, but this by no means is an excuse to not ward if you are going sup.

I say that because on my original server (BR) most people do not understand this. I just created a thread explaining how item 3041 is a bad purchase for supports outside of a few, specific situations. People didn't understood that and I received insults and I was humiliated.

Typically it's purchased on AP supports who can play very safely and have good AP ratios such as Janna and Lulu. The idea is that it can provide a lot of AP for a low cost, provided that you know how to avoid dying.

Obviously, you shouldn't buy it if you are dying a lot, but is can be a very cost-efficient purchase if you can stack it up.

I primarily play tank supports though, so I'm not really sure when and on who it's worth buying.

Stopped reading at "Supports die for the team"

Supports are supposed to peel for and protect their carries

If to protect their carries, it's required that the support die, so be it.

For example, sometimes the enemy Morgana throws a Q trying to kill your ADC. You as a support should try to protect them, and if you are low enough, this means that you have to sacrifice yourself for the ADC.

Or, if my adc is getting in a position to where they will die from a morg binding and cant just walk to one side, I leave them because Morg is either at point blank range or my adc is mentally afk. Committing suicide on the off chance my adc doesn't die a second or so later from their stupid decisions isn't a good idea.

Yes late game you might take that Morg Q. MIGHT. There's just as high a chance if you are playing a meijais support you have the disengage to keep them alive anyways (try to dive through janna QR, or get past Lulu RWE).

If your ADC is being hit by morg bindings, he/she is out of position. If your ADC can't dodge a morg binding, sucks to be them and I doubt they're coming out of Gold elo.

item 3041 is a great item on Janna if you're ahead. She can help her team from a safe distance and has so much disengage (and movement speed) it is hard to kill her. Supports have their AP ratios lowered, but they now have AP ratios in a lot more ways than just damage and heals/shield.

"dying for your team" isn't really what you should be doing. You shouldn't sacrifice yourself for the greater good. You should make sure no one has to die. Suiciding with a squishy support isn't going to help. If you do it with Leona, it might help because she's beefy and will tkae a lot of hits. With squishies you should stay far away, so if they do want to get to you, they must burn some gapclosers/cc (which they won't be able to use on the ADC).

I don't suggest it on other supports, but on Janna it's extremely easy to stack the soulstealer. You get assists on almost any kill made when you're nearby (you just need to shield an ally before they deal the last blow) and if you play well you rarely die. Having high AP makes your shield big, makes your ADC deal tons of damage while shielded, makes you move like the wind and heal like soraka.

But don't buy this item unless you're ahead in lane AND in team score. Even if you're 3/0 in botlane, if midlane is 0/5 you'll still get killed by enemy mid by their ganks.

AFAIK, there are only two supports who regularly build item 3041 : Janna and Lux . They have a few things in common.

  1. Decent AP ratios. Lux 's Q and R are over 70%. Janna 's E is 70% and her R is 180% for the full channel.

  2. Shields. Though they are squishy champions, they can shield quite a bit of incoming damage.

  3. Peeling and disengage. Aside from their shields, almost all of their skills are disengage/peel related (the only exception being Lux's R).

  4. Positioning/kiting/enemy focus. Unless you messed up badly, you should be positioned at the back of the team close to your carries, where you will proceed to try and peel off any enemies that dive your carry. Notice how I said your carry. That means that you, the support, are not likely to be focused, and if you are, see 3) and use your skills to get away.

No one's arguing that item 3041 isn't a niche pick-- it totally is. And no one is saying it's not a gamble-- again, it totally is. But if you're in the right situation with the right champ, it's a measured gamble, and one that can certainly pay off.

As for item 3001 ... it only works in close proximity, which means it mostly benefits frontline supports... champs like Nautilus Leona Thresh and Braum . Who typically have low AP ratios and prioritize health over other stats.
