Question about One-tricking

I read on reddit that a main component to one-tricking is playing into absolutely any matchup, especially your counters. So my question is in 2 parts. Is one-tricking an efficient way to climb, and what do you do as a one-trick when your champion comes into meta and is banned on the regular?

One trickers almost always play an off meta champ, or one that has super low ban rates. One tricking is efficient, as you know your champ better than anyone who goes against you knows theirs, excluding other 1 tricks. I can personally say that one tricking is very helpful to my climb. I play Nasus, who will never become Meta because he receives no LCS play.

So whenever you wake up in the morning, do you look forward to ignoring your entire team as it crumbles beneath you as you farm until 20?

When i was thinking about one tricking AURELION sol, I chose him because he is hard, and I can learn a lot from him. But with any champion, my matchup would be bad sometimes, and I couldn't swap. That, and if my champ was banned, I couldn't play him, so I would be dodging a LOT! So no, I don't think it's an efficient way to climb.

I see. I heard that some guy in Korea one-tricked ASol all the way from Silver into Masters but maybe he just really found his groove. That kind of rise is almost unfathomable.

I know what guy your talking about. Saw one game of his sol and thought, I wanna do that! Now look at my match history.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think most one tricks play literally only one champion. Rather, they play that champion whenever they can, but also prepare a simple backup* or two in case they're banned out or picked.

And yes, it is an efficient way to climb.

(* e.g. Annie Bot mains Annie, but tends to fall back on Veigar when Annie is banned.)

I'm a Talon one-trick (well not fully one-trick, I play lots of Zed too, but still). As such I can tell you that one-tricking a champion is a rather effective way to climb provided that you can play said champion at a higher level than you are currently at.

There are a few advantages to playing one champ for most of your games. First off, you quickly learn all the matchups. Secondly, you learn the ins and outs of the champion in basically any scenario you can find yourself in. These can help you carry even the toughest of games, or win even the worst of your lane matchups just by pure skill/experience difference.

The problems are rather straightforward: if your champ is banned you're kinda screwed and if it gets nerfed and becomes very weak you might not be able to effectively climb with it anymore. This is why nearly all one-trick players pick off meta champs that they enjoy, so that they have no risk of the champ getting banned/nerfed and they don't grow tired of playing said champion either.

Honestly one tricking is pretty good if you're able to make it work. In other words, if you're gonna be a one trick with champion X, you'd better be the best champion X player any soloq player might meet at that elo, so that you can outplay them and crush them and their team without troubles. If you can do that with a champion you like, you can surely climb as a one tricker yourself :P

Is one-tricking an efficient way to climb...

Oh hell yes!

If you put me in B5 on Kayle, I'd climb out of Bronze like nothing...ok maybe i'll get a little trouble from B2 but I'll get out no doubt. I play any other champion, I'd probably end up stuck in B3 or something.

One tricking is by far the best way to climb. It puts you at such a huge advantage as everyone thinks they're Faker than can play a million champs well.

Brother was a GP one trick. He went from gold II to diamond 5. I'd say it works.

One-tricking isn't actually viable or strong. That is an illusion many run into while studying people's tactics

Rather one tricking makes YOU viable and strong

What one-tricking does is removes your champion from the equation. You do the same thing over and over and the only variance becomes simple. You learn to play the game instead of learning to play the champion. In any given meta, knowing the game or knowing the champion could be the key to victory. When the former is stronger 1 tricking will benefit you the most. You may think this would be the case with the latter but this is only true in a particularly complicated system. Don't kid yourself, league wouldn't be that fun or even really playable if each champ was so complicated.
