Why is ZZ'rot almost never used?

It gives as much armor as Randuin's omen and as much magic resistance as Spirit Visage. I feel that during the cinderhulk era, all defensive items without health were neglected but now that cinderhulk has been nerfed you would think ZZ'rot would be popular again. Plus it is incredibly fun setting up the portals.

Unforntunately as far as defenses go, a combination of both HP and armor/mr is more effective in protecting against their respecitive damage. Thats not to say that you can't get ZZ'rot and a Warmogs and be any less tanky, but specializing in 1 defense and then the other is more effeicent than evenly building both at the same time.

Imagine it like if instead of maxing a single skill first, you leveled all your skills at the same time. It's the same for building tankyness. And unfortunately people either never get enough gold to build ZZ'rots later on in the game, or they just don't need it.

Leveling your skills like that isn't a bad thing at all, just like the stats are zzrots are really good. The item just has a tough time fitting into player builds because the active isn't oriented towards fighting champions. To be honest after thinking about it I'm definitely going to try and use it in more of my builds.

I get that as a 5th or 6th item on nearly all tanks or supports I play. Late-game singed with a zz'rot can knock towers so fast.

Its IMO good on soraka. Soraka's build revolves around having solid defense stats if your team doesn't have a tank. Soraka's tank is unqiue because you shouldnt build HP on her. Only flat defense like frozen heart. This item gives a solid amount of armor AND magic resist which is hard to find in a Soraka build.

Maybe if it prioritized structures above all else it'd be decent. I didn't buy it to last hit minions

It's also a ward if you put it somewhere sneaky. You can also stop a slow push by just putting it next to your tower.

Towers aren't that hard to take down anyway and the Banner of command pushes waves better.

I mean, nobody buys Ohmwrecker either, because towers dont really warrant it.

ZZ'rot is alot of fun but it is very gimmicky. Like the Blitzcrank of Items it has one trick and it is heavily dependent on the champ and situation.

If you are building it for the armor and MR than there are definitely better items with more beneficial passives and actives for the tank on the go. In fact i wouldnt even consider ZZ'rot for a tank build seeing as the stats are negligible and the active (void Gate) at best can just distract an opposing team for a few seconds. Largely due to the fact voidlings feel the need to fight everything in their way.

So unless you have a champ who can sit there on lane and babysit the portal (which is asking for salt if you are the team tank) it really is a useless active for the high cost.

ENTER TROLL PICK!

that being said I've found ZZ'Rot is best used on one and only one champion... A champion that screams troll from the select menu. A champion that has the time and ability to baby sit a lane with ease. And can passively clear the waves of minions so the little zerg spawns can direct their void fury on the turrets they hate so much.

I find that if you grab ZZ'rot portal as his second pick after zhonya's Heimy can camp a lane like a boyscout troop. drop his turrets in the overlapping triune pattern then drop that zzrot in the middle. Hiemy becomes a lane pushing monster.

No one else has the ability to baby sit the portal to maximize its full potential. Likewise the ZZ'rot gives Hiemy added defenses before he starts building deep AP.

Note: This build only works in soloque lower ELOs hiemy as a champ doesn't really bring much cohesion to a team fight which is the bread and butter of higher elos. However it is really fun to play and will bring alot of hate from the other team.

Everyone wants to leave zz'rot in an abandoned lane but I find it best when seiging a tower with a group. It provides a steady push and can chip away at the tower slowly while your team can keep it safe by everybody sitting on top of it.

Because it's a Niche item.
