A list of things Shaco needs help with

Issue(s): Shaco is considered a poor pick by many players, and either snowballs out of control and makes the enemy team hate their lives, or Shaco's own team. He consistently hovers around a 49-50% win rate because the low amount of players that can play him effectively, and those that do are usually in the higher elo, where players actually work with shaco's ganks instead of against. In low ELO, where players attempt to all-in prior to Shaco even getting close to melee range and then rage in chat when all you could do was throw an E out. /ff noob shaco. In low ELO, it doesn't matter if you fed your mid laner, top laner, your bot lane, or essentially removed the opposing jungler, if your team loses it's because you picked Shaco. Not because your ADC got caught out roaming alone in their jungle, it wasn't that your support dc'd 3 minutes in, and it wasn't because your top laner didn't roam outside their lane until the 30 minute mark, you picked Shaco, your fault.

From what I've seen since season 2, nothing of his kit has been changed considerably other than nonsensical nerfs like his Deceive distance, and a reduction in the slow from his E. His kit alone hovers around a grey area of inconsistencies, and a fear of if something is buffed he will go to #1 ban, while newer champs like Ekko, get to be tanky, do a lot of burst and sustained damage, and get to escape. Where a champion like Rengar hits 6 after 5 minutes of game time and proceeds to instagib your carry. Where an ADC like Graves, can be good at top, jungle, or adc because you're going to give him 120 of free defensive stats, simply by playing the game.

Problems:

  • Strong early game, can force players to play excessively passive
  • Uncatchable split pusher
  • Assassin who can’t team fight
  • Permanent slow
  • Poor mid game
  • Can’t carry, even if Fed
  • Steroid is built into positioning of enemy player to Shaco

Positives:

  • Early game pressure
  • Lots of outplay potential
  • Somewhat Mobile
  • Advanced interactions (invulnerable with R, block skillshots with W, etc.)
  • Can work as AP or AD, with unique gameplay for either

So what does Shaco then need?

Rework? Sure, we've seen several champions recently that have been done very well not only design and kitwise, but thematically too. But as Riot has tried several times, the latest actual verbal confirmation of a rework was almost two years ago. Apart from that, they had the surprising change of adding relic buffs to the clone, a welcomed change that has been requested for ages. If they're going to rework him, I would much rather it be done now with the people that are in place for it, as the recent reworks have looked really good, and could potentially keep a lot of what makes Shaco fun, without removing a lot of what doesn't.

If they're not reworking, here's what still remains:

  • Boxes are the only AP damage that do not proc magical procs, like Liandry, Rylai, etc.

  • Clone suffers much from auto attacking and control wonkyness because of it being a pet(possibly being fixed with Annie's fixes)

  • Shaco gets unstealthed by start of auto instead of a hit of an auto, allowing cancellations to break his stealth, and his only escape

  • Clone spawn and pathing inconsistencies can allow enemies to easily escape while the cast time of clone, and that it can't be cast on the move.

  • Boxes have an extremely short duration, which lowers the ability to actually control objectives and zones given the new trinkets directly counter things like traps.

  • Boxes are also one shot by jungler monsters rather early in the game, where Shaco's ability to farm the jungle is pretty awful pre-Tiamat(Him needing Tiamat to actually clear things quickly is a problem in itself)

A few things: -Shaco's midgame is where he's supposed to shine. In the early game you can cheese the enemy jungler, sure, but you actually don't deal tons of damage just by ganking. You need a way better setup than later on in the game and these early ganks are supposed to give you your midgame power.

-Building Shaco super squishy throughout the whole game will cripple him at some point, because he starts to be one of those assassins that'll go in and always die, even if he's still taking the adc with him. Shaco is superflexible in his builds, he can adapt to almost any kind of game because of how well he works with many different items.

-Shaco can carry games. Easily. His splitpushing power allows you to have early control over the map and turrets. He's a nightmare to fight vor most squishier champs and is able to outplay and kill any champion in the game just through players skill. You just need to be more proactive than other champs, because you aren't scary enough like other fed champs to just get stuff done by being present.

I'm going to disagree with a lot of this, Shaco falls off very hard mid game, so if you're not super effective early game you're going to have a miserable time in the midgame. In fact, with the jungle and vision changes the last couple of seasons, even if you cheese the jungler, they can just afk farm and come back still strong. Killing the jungler and owning a good portion of the jungle doesn't stop them from coming back like it used to.

Shaco can carry games, however, it's on a far harder level than any other champion in the game. He's the only assassin without a real escape since Q is being used to engage. In addition, Shaco is one of the only champions in the game you actually have to build full adc to reach his full potential, which is hard considering his inability to farm quickly or at a high level of sustain. Sure, you can build a little bruiser, but then his capability of instagibbing a carry falls off, and isn't that desirable compared to just playing something that is designed to be a bruiser.
