Can we talk about Chalice and Unholy Grail?

Let's start with the two "super" mana options: item 3070 - for a big pool of mana, good for large and frequent expenditures of mana, but not so great at replenishing it. Allows for multiple, successive, heavy bursts of spellcasting. item 3028 - for a quickly refilling pool of mana, good for low cost or infrequent expenditures of mana. Heavy spellcasting will drain your mana pool, but moderate spellcasting will keep you at decent levels to where you can still keep casting, not in heavy bursts.

With the preseason patch, I believe item 3028 and its upgrades got gutted with the removal of its previous Unique Passive. As a reminder: >UNIQUE PASSIVE: Grants 100% base health regen per 5 seconds if your current health percentage is lower than your current mana percentage. Grants 100% base mana regen per 5 seconds if your current mana percentage is lower than your current health percentage.

That was the old passive on item 3028 . The new passive on it after the preseason patch is: >UNIQUE: Gain +25% base health regeneration for every +25% base mana regeneration.

Now here's the point of contention. BEFORE the preseason changes to Chalice (and consequently, Unholy Grail)...

  • If your %current mana was lower than your %current hp, you would have +150% mana regeneration.
  • For Unholy Grail, with those same circumstances, you would have +175% mana regeneration.

AFTER the preseason changes, here's what Chalice does now (and consequently, Unholy Grail)...

  • +50% mana regeneration, +50% health regeneration
  • For Unholy Grail, +75% mana regeneration, +75% health regeneration

In summation, garbage. Chalice and Unholy Grail users don't necessarily need or even want health regeneration. They want the mana regeneration. The preseason changes have resulted in...

  • item 3028 is now 33% effective at regenerating mana, as compared to before preseason
  • item 3174 is now 50% effective at regenerating mana, as compared to before preseason

These are horrid changes to Chalice and Unholy Grail. All the champions I build Chalice and Unholy Grail on are sitting at abyssmal levels of mana during games, when they should be at, at least, moderate levels of mana, with regular spellcasting.

Champs who make use of Chalice and Unholy Grail aren't looking for good health regen, they are looking for great mana regen.

Balance team, please remedy this injustice our premier mana regeneration items.

Yeah, I agree. Since they first changed this item set, it has suffered from Nashor's Tooth syndrome, in that it was literally only good on ap Kog'maw and Kayle. Athene's is only good on Sona and maybe Soraka now. Maybe it should be an alternate build path out of Tear of the Goddess?
