Why isn't Master Yi part of the assassin update?
If you look at his champion spotlight video from several years ago, Phreak even says he's an assassin. So it seems odd not to include him.

Old categorization vs new one.
The Old Category of an Assassin is now called "Slayer", the melee carries of the game that primarily bring damage, mobility, and conditional defenses to the game in trade for being squishy melees.
The Slayer Class is then divided into two Sub Classes, "Skirmishers" and "Assassins".
Skirmishers are champions with conditionally powerful active defenses and mobility, and can DPS down any foe.
Assassins are champions with massive mobility and flexibility to pick out a target, kill/disable/threaten them, then get out of the fight.
In the old categorization, Yi is an Assassin because he's a Melee Carry that runs in, picks a target, and tries to kill them into a snowball.
In the new categorization, Yi would instead be recognized as a Skirmisher due to his limited mobility, potentially powerful defensive tools, and his primary form of damage being DPS.
He ain't an assassin tho
He's a melee carry. A Skirmisher, if you want to go by Riot's fancy shmancy new subclasses. Very definitively not an assassin.
Because he's not really an assassin and doesn't fit the classification. Nothing about his kit is about killing off a specific target and getting out alive like most assassins do. I do think Master Yi needs a rework though due to how his kit works compared to modern standards.
Because he's a skirmisher.
