Assassin Design

My verdict on the assassin patch following this is down below.

Sigh I'm long overdue on wanting to say this, had a lot of issues so I couldn't post it. No, i'm noone famous just feels bad when you can post your thoughts on something coming until it's around the corner.

I personally gave thoughts to what an assassin should contain in their kits not completely 100% but most of it. Started thinking about it cause of the assassin patch but it was pretty difficult to narrow down so I just did a checklist:

Burst duelist- An assassin should be able to do CD reliant exchanges(Not necessarily CD on skills but "Gated" when it comes to doing damage, basically not sustained damage and having a "moment of power".)

Kill window not being too unreasonable to use or to face- Not saying you shouldn't die if you're surprised something was trying to kill you.... Just wanna say it shouldn't be <0.1-0.25 seconds

Outplay potential which can be relevant late game- Now this is something we'll argue about, I consider Ekko, Fizz, Kass, and Zed to be outplay assassins. LB is not outplay that's escape potential, she wants to do as much damage in a trade then run instead of trying to go in maybe avoid something while still trying to stay in. I will not agree with LB being considered as outplay potential.

As someone facing them can you avoid damage to an extent when surprised- This is more of a yes you should die if you didn't expect someone wants to kill you but can you at least not die in <0.1-0.25 seconds from their damage. This is the reason I don't agree that one-shots are the core of assassins being able to unload and kill someone surprised yes, but direct one-shots no. Because balancing a one-shot is much harder than balancing "so you can still get off an immediate kill when successfully surprising someone".

While being used, can you still do something even when not possible to conceal yourself- An issue of assassins in general, Ekko(Not including broken W), Evelyn(Gimped atm but possible when not gimped), Fizz, Kass, Kat(can do more than others when not concealed), Zed can do something with no element of surprised, and while it's not a requirement if needed to teamfight they can still do something in the plain of sight. (I am excluding stealth and camo champs)

Roaming power- I don't think any assassin fails at this? Maybe Kass early game? Idk don't really feel like it's an issue.

Pseudo Wave Clear-Check(I say pseudo cause they shouldn't be clearing faster than a pusher-type/mage/adc champion but can still somewhat waveclear if needed)

Splitpushing- I think more assassins should be able to splitpush, it gives so much to a duelist(skirmisher) or assassin when they can splitpush because it breaks up a team where their playstyle shines or gives teams power to go for something else while they distract. Pseudo Waveclear plays heavily into this.

A way to get in/get out- Now I know it is annoying when they get out but I think on assassins it should still stay a thing. Making it a bit more skill required to get out is fine.

If given a CC skill is it a fight-able CC(Like slows/roots where you can fight back not all soft CC cause silences, disarm, entangle should never be on assassins) or at least single target/inconsistent hard CC(Everything that isn't Ekko's W, even fizz's is at least an ulti so it's not consistent and shaco's is destructable so it's not reliable)

Low zoning power in 5on5 teamfights unless via ulti-(Every assassin except Ekko's W)

Yes I am salty about ekko's W, but aside from the saltiness I do think those are some decent guidelines assassins could follow for the update/future. Would love to hear feedback!

There is always outplay potential. If someone gets one-shotted by an assassin, that is almost always entirely their fault.

Tbh I don't see outplay potential on some "all-in" assassins. Like let's say talon, he goes in when he gets a chance->blow someone up then prays he contributed enough or is ahead enough to get another target/ignore retaliation.

There shouldn't be an excessive amount of it of course but I do think smoother kill potential for a better outplay for some assassins is better.

I mean people shouldn't be wandering out alone if there's a Talon MIA in the first place. If they do, that's their fault if they get killed.

Talon can't do crap if his target is with a team unless he wants to go for a suicide dive. And once all his CDs are down to kill a single target, he's essentially useless after.

I feel assassins should have more or less these tools: A reliable way to get to their target High reliable instantaneous burst damage A way to kill their foe without the targets awareness or reprisal A reasonable chance of escape

I tie reliable to get to the target as outplay. Outplay isn't really escaping (Hence why prior I felt LB was just escape potential not outplay) it's more of outmaneuvering your opponents to reach.

The other 3 I included just worded differently, However high, reliable, instantaneous burst I don't fully agree with, 2 out of 3 of them at once yes, but all 3 at once gets a bit out of hand fast.

High reliable burst I feel is where most of them are, but as long as it's not killing <0.3 seconds without warning it's working so far.

Otherwise if it is instantaneous there's more counterplay meaning you feel rewarded for doing it and less likely for nerfs. (Altho rengar's bonetooth and kha's isolated Q are a bit of an issue atm funny the 2 rivals are problematic just as in most forms of entertainment xD)

Assassins are not warriors. Plays and outplays should have nothing to do with it - assassins should have next to no counterplay because they're strategic threats, not tactical ones.

You don't send your assassin to fight on the battlefield, you send him in to kill the enemy general in his sleep.

However, I concede that I may be falling victim to "how assassins should operate thematically" over "what feels the most 'fair' within the game".

Oh yea that does tend to be a problem with any game, theme vs balance. I sometimes forget that myself since I try focusing more on balance ever since I stopped reading lore cause I wrapped into theme too much.

Not saying it's wrong or you're wrong just it's kinda of those morally gray areas in terms of gaming(holy shxt assassins might be a gamer's controversal topic, no wonder I have an issue fully defining theme until I made this checklist post lol)

I really hope ekko's W gets addressed in the assassin patch...

My verdict on the assassin patch of what wasn't followed:

Akali- She's only having placeholder changes until her rework comes so I'll skip her.

Ekko- His W does give immense zoning and hard CC, however albeit to my dismay I'm willing to see where he goes after the changes.

Evelyn- Surprisingly didn't get any placeholder changes but her big relaunch will come anyways.

Fizz- Follows all listed

Kassadin- Surprisingly wasn't even touched, feelsbadman really wanted to see if they'd change something

Kat- Follows all listed

Kha'Zix- I kinda feel vs isolated his Q's free CDR makes him near unbeatable in a proper 1v1(no summons etc.) but you'd have to be isolated to actually taste his fearful (Sigh failed at making an innuendo joke QQ). Jokes aside against isolated he's kinda close to sustain dmg, HOWEVER keyword is isolated. He does feel like the strongest assassin so far, but I do think once players get use to him he does have all of the following. If any nerfs were to happen I would just wish E interacted with isolated (Maybe E makes units you land on isolated for a few seconds that way they can move a lot of power off Q).

LeBlanc- Follows all listed.

Nocturne- Surprisingly riot didn't even give him a placeholder change.... Even after admitting they feel he's more of a bruiser and they wanted to move him to assassin.

Rengar- Follows all listed, however feels more bruiser than ever but not a tank ekko/fizz balance issue since his sustain isn't free, still have to all in, and has a single target skill for cc which has to be empowered. not to mention his Q is dodgeable/counter playable now I feel him being the "tankiest" assassin is fine compared to the more toxic ones his works better.

Shaco AP- Follows all listed

Shaco AD- Follows all listed

Talon- Follows all listed

Zed- Follows all listed

I'm pretty surprised Evelyn, Kassadin, and Nocturne weren't even touched Albeit Evelynn and Akali have planned reworked, I assumed Eve would have placeholder changes. While Noc I'm just really confused cause riot said they didn't see him as a bruiser and wanted to move him towards assassin. Unless I'm missing an explanation on those 3 champs.
