Nerf Akali and Irelia the same way you nerfed Zoe

Make them nearly unplayable, then buff them up slowly until they're good, but not OP.

So why would we nerf Akali?

You don't think she's hard to play against?

Not any more than any other assassin.

You don't think her shroud makes trading against her near impossible? You think that she's as easy to gank as other assassins? Okay.

Depends on who you are and it depends on how good you are, but personally? No.

Fair enough. In my opinion, her shroud makes trading against her so hard because she goes invis before I can attack her again, but you're probably better than me.

Three options I've found so far:

  1. AOE. champions like Diana, Galio, Ziggs, Syndra, Darius, Aatrox etc etc etc (I mean theres LOADS of them)
  2. DoT. Any damage (like those AOE's from 1)) reveal her position in shroud. This means you can continue to beat on her/avoid her. Malzahar is a good example of this, with Malefic Visions showing where she is and Call of the Void continuously refreshing it. Ignite works as well....
  3. Walk away. I mean it has a 17 second cooldown level 1 (which means most of laning phase) and lasts 5 seconds. You walk away from Galio W, Diana W, Veigar E/W and a host of other abilities like it. Just walk away, let her CS, then clear the wave/bully her while it's on CD if you can't play around 1) and 2)

Irelia I understand a little better: In the hands of an idiot she's ok, in the hands of someone who's good with her she seems amazing... until you realise she's good at level 2, 3, and 6. After that, if you've not snowballed her, you can basically beat her with most champions. But as an idiot (seriously I'm BAD at irelia and yet have about an 80% winrate with her) I can say people are just so afraid of what she can do in the right hands that they LET you win, and she is pretty damn easy to play. She might need a little balancing, but I wouldn't say shes OP, just meta.

You should try to play her. Most players brush off the benefits of actually being in the skin of their nemesis. It's funny how it's expected from Akali players to train hard to be good when in the meanwhile people want to be able to play against without much practice. It goes both ways, the champion is quite difficult to handle, you'll get a clear view of her struggles when playing her directly.

[By "difficult to handle", I mean there's a world between a good and a casual Akali; doesn't mean a beginner can't plow down opponents lacking knowledge, making him look like he knows what he's doing]

Basically, if enemy Akali can use her smoke to casually farm and trade, you're not applying enough pressure. Think of her Q as an ammo system: she can use it a couple times in a row but if she does, she's up for 10 seconds of Cd. The most important thing is: you MUST position in a way Akali can't proc her passive without using either W or E. If she can walk up to you and Q you directly, you'll take a lot of unnecessary damage. Akali doesn't see you as a champion, not even as a prey, but as a mobile energy restoration station: the whole purpose of the champion is to abuse her energy mechanics to break standard limitations (and if your opponent dies from giving energy too often, that's a nice addition). Every spell she's using not restoring her energy (smoke while full energy, or not procing/using her passive) grounds her to basic, almost low level of threat for a few seconds.

That said, I think she could be a tiny bit nerfed, but not the Obscured effect nor the duration, she needs that to combo properly. But I find her movespeed while in smoke too deceiving, 10-20% bonus should be enough, 20-40% makes her fly around you like distance is nothing and flat mobility like that is a bit hard to counter since she can use that speed to dodge effectively most non-targeted spells.
