Can we commend Riot for a second?

Disembark··85 votes·4,026 views

I don't come to boards often but I saw the front page and it looks like people are bashing riot left and right for stuff.

Can we commend riot for some things they've done from season 6/early season 7 though??

1) SOLO QUEUE Yeah, they brought it back boys. I know, autofill is annoying but honestly I get autofilled like less than 5% of my games. I also enjoy support so theres that. Loving SoloQ.

2) Hextech Crafting Ok, I for one LOVE hextech crafting. Legit I had 0 skins before and didn't care for them. But through hextech crafting I got skins I would NEVER get in my life (like blood moon thresh, spirit guard udyr) and it makes the game SO much more enjoyable and lets broke people have some skins too :). I look forward to playing champs i have skins for, and sometimes I only play a champ cuz i got a badass skin for it.

3) Rotating Game Modes

Not ALWAYS the best, but they're actually enjoyable a lot of the time. Its the perfect way to keep URF and All-For-One keep coming without them getting stale. There are improvements to be made but the idea is spectacular

4) PRETTY GOOD BALANCE People say Lucian is OP, Graves is OP... ok maybe they're strong but nothing is as OP as the shit you saw last season (for LONG periods of time)

Tank Ekko: Build sunfire then just go dive every lane you please. Late game just split push and chase any squishy down to their nexus if they dare to even look at you from a mile away. Oh, you wanna gank him or 5 man him? Nvm hes gonna slow you all and get a movespeed buff. Oh yeah and hes super tanky too haha. Oh and teamfights you just stun people for 2.25 secs and half life everyone while taking 0 damage. Bad engage? Press R man! 59-60% w/r

Lucian: You built ghostblade? Ok, you can now 1v2 bot lane. Not even kidding. I used to build ghostblade, hide in a bush and just 1 shot the adc, and then kill support too. JG shows up? Lul kill his ass too. 56-57% w/r

Jungle s6: Oh guys we're 27-0 this should be an easy game. Yi whos been power farming for 35 mins shows up. Oh shit guys he has 3.5K hp with devourer and rageblade run before he 1shots our whole team. (Enemy Pentakill).

Jungle s7: Oh shit guys lee sin is level 7 while bot lane is level 4. (Dove). Well guess i got outplayed there :) (fixed XP in jg)

Honorable mentions: Zed (after QSS), Kog'Maw (reverted), Malz (after mage rework, now gutted), Yasuo (triforce build).

I know a lot of these fk ups are riot-created, but these shit plagued all of Season 6. Like there wasn't a week where something wasn't busted a shit.

Right now some champions are in the gutter, sure, BUT I'd rather have 10 champs in the gutter than 10 champs broken as shit while other champs are balanced

Honorable Mentions: Replays Sandbox mode (could be improved, ofc) New skins are super cool and make me excited (project ashe, dark star thresh, god fist lee sin)

Well now its "you built Bork? Ok, you can now 1v2 bot lane." xd

Schàdenfreude2 votes

The funny thing is that the OP is seeing it as a good thing that Lucian with ghostblade was corrected, when in reality, it was just a mistake fixed. It would've been better if Riot simply didn't make that mistake in the first place. In fact, if the community didn't criticise Lucian for being OP then Riot probably would've never fixed it.

TurquoiseYoshi5 votes

Here's the thing: Nobody really knew how powerful it was for a long time. Remember when Flat Arpen Lucian was called Korean Build Lucian, because it was a build that was found mostly in Korean Solo Queue? There were no immediate buffs or changes to either champ/item bringing in that build, it was random discovery. You're expecting Riot to have the foresight to know that a side abuse build completely ignored for about a year will be crazy OP without anyone knowing, and that's a little much.

Morgan le Fey5 votes

This, basically. There's an effectively infinite possible combinations of champions and builds for any one player. A given game has 10 players, but even that's not all of it. Every build is affected by what else is popular and what's expected, which all in turn effect each other, meaning something that has fairly reasonable numbers overall can be extremely broken simply because none of its counters work well with/against everything else that's popular atm. That's all a meta is: expectations and the play around those expectations.

By way of example, in a heavy tank/armor meta, the lethality meta would never've happened. When the other side has three 300 armor tanks, your 20 armor pen isn't nearly as effective as it is vs. a team of squishies with 40 armor.

Melledoneus2 votes

Lucian is just a fucking pain to balance with that passive of his.

Krys Star5 votes

You really think it's his passive? I think it's his dash, personally. He's an extremely mobile marksman, a role that's supposed to be a powerhouse carry yet also fragile. In Lucian's case, his dash (how easily and often it comes up) mitigates and reduces his weaknesses, sometimes even negating them. He doesn't need to depend on his team due to his mobility compared to other carries.

He already has pretty low range as it is. It's just his dash that nulls it.

Disembark3 votes

Ok thats memey but its not true at all. Like yes once I get Bork I can almost 1v1 almost any ADC at THAT point exactly. Like if your support roams then yeah you're dead (dash into bork active - but you shouldn't disrespect a lucian like that when you're supports gone and he's got bork).

Ghostblade was another beasty. 20 flat armour pen, 65 AD, 40% attack speed & move speed.

Let that sink in. Ghostblade in season 7 was 20 LETHALITY, 60 AD, and JUST move speed. And it was STILL busted.

Like you LEGIT 1v2'd the lane not by being smart or landing poke - just walk into lane, press active, run them both down. It was the most braindead shit ever (and I loved it xd)

Problem with Bork RN is that it doesn't sacrifice late game like GB did. However it was so ridiculously OP that late game didn't matter when you could 1v9 once you got GB + cleaver.

I'll commend them when their skin team starts realizing that there are more than 15 champions in the game.

Almighty9 votes

It's funny how all the "Riot bashers" stil play the game they just bashed.

Almighty.

Skins Project3 votes

It's funny how all the Almighty bashers still reply to almighty....

oh wait

;-;

Seriously though? People just like to complain... Not much more to say, not advocating for it. It's just that simple though.

Dextix LT2 votes

Yes of course, just ignore the playerbase, they never have anything to say, they just complain.......

Skins Project1 votes

Well your comment is entirely irrelevant.

This is only discussing the people who DO insult riot.

Beyond that is it worth diving into a pile of trash to get a single fresh apple?

Is it worth taking gunshot after gunshot for a medi kit?

Please.

Dextix LT1 votes

I mean, this might be a controversial idea, but what if people who insult Riot have a point? But wait, that is impposible, Riot cannot do anything wrong.

Skins Project2 votes

Then quit.

Nobody is keeping you here.

If you don't like it, well guess what, nobody gives a shit, feel free to leave, I'll enjoy it until I dislike it.

Dextix LT2 votes

I mean, this might be another controversial idea to a fanboy, but what if people want the game to become better and that is why they critisize it? But wait, that is impposible, every critisism of Riot is a personal unfounded attack by haters who do not want to play the game. Riot cannot do anything wrong.

Sqkerg1 votes

Let me introduce YOU to an idea sir, what if theirs a difference between providing criticism and bashing?

Telling Riot what they think in a considerate and non-emotional way is a good thing, I don't think that mr. Skins Project is arguing against that.

This however, is not to be confused with bashing. Bashing is more akin to yelling than discussing. You just got out of a game where you got stomped by X champion, so you go onto the boards and make a thread telling Riot all the ways they've screwed up and how they are the worst company in existence, etc. This sort of post is not focused on providing feedback, its focused on the OP blaming their in-game problems on Riot because it makes them feel better about themselves. Riot not only shouldn't, but CAN'T take anything meaningful away from that post.

(also as a side note, personally attacking the person you're trying to talk to is really disrespectful and is also a concession of the argument itself, as you're effectively saying "I can't think of a way to counter your point so I'll just call you names instead", along those lines, it's also somewhat childish to show such hostility towards a person you don't even know just because they disagree with you)

Dextix LT2 votes

There is a difference between both, the problem is that fanboys of products lump those in together, in LOL included. I have seen far too much fully detailed critisism called bashing.

Also, like i said in the threads when ppl asked for SQ when DQ was the only available que.

You know what happened then? After a time people stopped making arguments and just started asking more and more vehemently. That was also called bashing and called "having no arguments". By that point people were tired of restating the same arguments over and over and over again. There is a breaking point when people are simply too tired of silence and ignoring everyone.

THAT is the problem. RIOT ignoring everything. And people are now at the breaking point where thy simply want Riot to listen no matter what.

Also its hard to be polite when i am basically told to fuck off if i dont like something, i have seen this bullshit in Runescape when they fucked it up, it does not end well, and such people ARE fanboys. When you are this invested in the game that you say that everyone who does not like it should leave, you ARE a fanboy, simple as that.

Skins Project1 votes

Apologies if that came out wrong.

As I mentioned I was referring to the OG comment which stated.

"People who bash riot" I don't refer bashing as spamming about XXX champion or writing long heart thought essays as to what you think should happen (I'm personally a fan of Mira)

When I refer to bashing I mean the people who say things like "I don't play the game anymore I just stay on boards to point out every mistake"

Or those who complain about an upcoming change just to realize that it wasn't as bad as they assumed.

Think about the Mao bug even. People complained day & night to find out, oh wait Riot isn't doing that it's a bug.

When I say leave if you don't like I wasn't referencing changes. I was referencing if you don't like the company and you don't want to support them then just don't support them. Nobody is forcing you to use YOUR credit card.

Well I in particular have spent somewhere around $1000 on my account, I don't want my money back, but when a champ I own $75 in skins for is remade into a completely different champ altogether, I think there should be some kind of system that would allow me to pick a skin of equal value (not a refund of rp, just an exchange) for a champion that hasn't been completely destroyed. I mean after all I'm only wanting what I purchased, and after they destroy the champion I bought the skin for, that item is no longer what I purchased.

The game is in its worst state of balance its ever been in and ive played since season 1. I don't know what you are on.

Disembark21 votes

Worst state of balance? Seriously? Did you play during the devourer meta? Or right after triforce was changed when hecarim, irelia, and vi were 1v9ing because the item was too good on them.

Or season 4 with feral flare? There's a lot of shit champs right now but there are no "ridiculously busted" champs like there have been in the past. The only champ thats even arguably pick/ban right now is Lulu. Thats for both competitive and soloq.

Foh if you're gonna say "worst state of balance" and not even back it up.

MalrothDragonia12 votes

ALSO, pro play has some of the highest champ diversity we've seen in like, two seasons. Adding ten bans, making Dragon interesting at all stages of the game, making vision an interesting strategic component for the entire team instead of sticking support with all of it. Updating champs that just didn't work and now are awesome (WW, Poppy, Sion, not a huge fan of Galio direction but he's fun in his own right) People need to stop the hate. With almost 150 champs we're never going to get a perfectly balanced game, but damnit if Riot isn't doing the best they can to make sure the game remains interesting in fun.

Succubús GF2 votes

They arent doing the best they can. They have admitted theyll never hurt their poster boy lee sin. Orianna has seen pro play since release. Urgot has been missing from the game doe how many seasons now? Sion's update was hardly an update, it was a joke and they migh as well make him an actual champion. Are we going to ignore the other reworks that have flopped so god damn hard? Ryze how many reworks should we give him? 3 more? They knew what they were doing when they completely changed leblanc and then gutted her for being too strong. They keep Azir AurelionSol Kalista weak for how long ? How much longer should we wait? Oh but syndra got popular in pro play and suddenly the nerf hammer. It was almost instant. Cut the shit

MalrothDragonia11 votes

The fact that at low-elo people can abuse certain champions doesn't mean the champion is inherently broken. Lee Sin has some solid counterplay and his numbers aren't insane. There's a reason you don't see him in literally every game. He's popular, yes, but he's in a solid place.

Urgot is getting his much needed rework, and he even saw pro play last season to some success. One of the reasons they didn't act sooner is that his play rates were so low there were higher priorities.

Aurelion Sol is fuckin strong right now, I don't know what you're seeing, he just has one of the highest learning curves in the game.

Kalista was straight up broken until they made her more reliant on her linked champion, and she still sees some solid play. Azir has little counterplay when he's strong, and yeah, he's pretty weak right now. As I said, balancing a roster of 150 champions is near-impossible.

I think that for a game of this size, and the scope of the work they do, people do not appreciate the programming, art, and testing manpower required to do some of the things people expect. IT TAKES A TON OF TIME. I see a ton of "Boohoo, my main isn't good right now", get fucking over it. Diversify, play other champs. These are the same people who only play one dude, q up for ranked and then feed or rage because it gets picked/banned or they got autofilled into something else. Jeebus. Learn the whole game. If you want to just play a single dude all day go play Heroes of the Storm.

ShadowParker4 votes

No. They didn't rework Urgot sooner because they couldn't find a direction that was healthy and kept him to his character.

MalrothDragonia3 votes

Also true

GayFluffyUnicorn1 votes

How can this even get upvoted. Low elo? Lee sin has a 45-49% winrate from bronze to gold. Diamond to masters 51-55% not taking challenger into account since many winrates are flawed due to the lack of games like rammus with 70% winrate in challenger. (still 54 in 600 games) So no low elo does certainly not abuse lee sin. Well literally every single game is a race for graves or lee sin and since both have a pretty decent banrate, 15 and 20%, you don't see them every game. He is not in a solid place he is straight up broken especially higher on the ladder his numbers show it, the fact that he is oh so mechanical intensive and falls off and what not. I just loosely quote riot on this about leblanc and zed with 10% playrate and barely 50-51% winrate: blabla mechanical champs with these numbers are way too strong. Zed and leblanc (old btw) at 45-47% winrate are balanced. But lee sin is okay with 35% pickrate and 51-55% winrate in higher-high elo?

People have all the right to complain when meta champs are just SO MUCH stronger than non meta champs. Jungle is a race for graves/lee all the time. Botlane is pick lucian and win. or dont pick him and lose if you don't permagank him into oblivion. Thing is riot in the meantime became a multi billion dollar company with only ONE game to take care of. The bigger they get the more shit they fuck up and just let it running. This is what people upsets. A lot of shit is broken in soloQ? Nah we are not nerfing it now, you know LCS MSI BIGPLAYS HURR DURR. Shit like lucian should be hotfixed immediately. Graves is cancer since his rework and slips in and out of meta immediately becoming uncontested god tier. But riot is way too proud of their rework and his "exciting" gameplay in proplay to actually nerf him and it is not like riot doesn't have the guts to butcher champs. Hello olaf, sejuani, s6 zed, shen, malz. But they have a problem with actually nerfing lee, graves, riven, ahri and the likes. If azir wouldn't have been such an obvious problem he would still rampage from soloQ to lcs because he is entertaining and bla. Look at leblanc. How long do we have to wait till this shit get fixed. Half a year now she remains absolutely bullshit. Kata? Still 31% banrate across all elos in the last 7 days and 40% in the last month. She has this banrate since her rework so clearly people do not enjoy playing with or against her. For a company of this size and budget riot is very slow and opens up one front after the other without solving the problems they created MONTHS ago.

Here, learn some things about the state of the game. Lee Sin isn't even in the top 5 overall junglers across the game. Yeah, he has a high pick rate because people like the champ, but come on man. Ivern is more of a problem than he is. Calm your tits.

Commader Kiwi1 votes

considering 70% of the players are low elo - you should meet the needs of the general community not the 0.1 %

MalrothDragonia1 votes

Part of the game is learning, hopefully with the idea to get better to the point where you don't care about Lee Sin. Also, I would say more than .1% of players know how to deal with Lee Sin. I've also seen so many Lee Sins just die, over and over, because he isn't a simple faceroll champ like many people think. He's a great learning champ. So yeah, no, they have to balance period, with over 100 champions, some are higher skill cap, some lower, I think for his power Lee Sin is in a fine place.

Wow, Graves is considered a pick ban. Shocker. Didn't see that coming from pro play.

No one bans Lucian because it's usually on their team in that elo. Or better bans, like Fiora and Camille.

YoungSirJ0ey2 votes

Reading isn't hard. Camille has a banrate under 10% with a pickrate under 5%, Fiora under 15% for both. Graves' banrate is only around 35%, with a 15% pickrate. None of them are pick/ban, even in competitive.

AirKingNeo1 votes

Every competitive game in major regions right now happen to consist of Graves and Camille being picked or banned.

Only thing I agree on is hextech. Bringing back solo queue? They got rid of it in the first place before. They also made queue times longer. Technically. Now we have two queue's instead of one. Guess how the supports are divided? It's not 50/50.

Everything they've added over the years has always come at the cost of something else. If you're not part of the majority (the herd) Riot does not care about you. They will throw you under the bus, without a second thought, in order to please new players and people that don't even play this game.
