System of Counters

I do not object to this games system of champions countering other champions or anything. But sometime's I'd like to play a game like this where every character is always equally viable, due to counters not being a factor. LoL is fine as it is; but does anybody know of a game like LoL where nobody counters anybody?

Unless champions are literally identical, there will be situational counters. And if champions are literally identical, snowballing will be a major issue since theres no room for outscaling or different power spikes.

Various flash games and some indie games and so forth operate on single mechanics wherein characters can be functionally identical, but full on MOBAs get a lot of their depth from having functionally different champions, and hence it's unlikely we'll see a MOBA with everyone equally viable at all times.

One for all mode is probably the closest you'd get to what the experience would be like, and I doubt you think that's as good as you imagine a counter-less MOBA would be.

starcraft2

Isn't that a real-time strategy game? That's quite different.

MOBA is a sub-genre of real-time strategy. It's not different at all.

In fact, the game that started the MOBA thing (DotA) was a mod for Warcraft, which is basically Starcraft's cousin game. They're all very related.

Sub-genres can be very different indeed, and I was aware of where Moba's came from. Still have Warcraft III on my computer.

Moba's are PvP arena's where you control a single character. RTS's are PvE or PvP warzones/battlegrounds where you worry about resources, building, and you can control everybody in your group. They are controlled similarly, but they are very different games.

If characters are different then some characters will always naturally counter others. It's just the way it is in games. Unique aspects counter each other.

Darius does not intentionally counter Nasus. He wasn't released to do that. But Nasus happens to be a scaling (weak early), slow, melee champion with only an attack speed slow, which makes him the perfect prey for Darius, because Nasus can't kite, trade, escape, or fight him. Darius, however, would lose lane to Quinn, because the nature of her kit allows her to kite him, poke him, and vault away when he uses his only engage.

It's just the way it is in any game with significantly different characters. Even card games have counters. Fighting games have counters. Even shooters (at least more complex ones) have counters. And so on.

I do understand what people are saying, and like I said I'm not against counters (soft or hard) or anything, I would just like to play without them sometimes. I just can't help but think it must be possible to have characters with differences but not in ways that create a system of counters.

On the other side of this coin, there are other times where I'm playing games having thoughts like "What is the point of this guy being a tank if he can't survive this assassin despite their assassinyness" or "What is the point of this guy being an assassin if he can't damage out this tank despite their tankyness"

I see what you're saying. You can try other MOBAs if you wanna try and keep it in this genre.

I would try SMITE, to be honest. It's very mechanically involved. You have to skillshot-aim, like, ALL of your spells, even your auto-attacks. I've seen people get outplayed so hard that their autos were literally getting side-stepped. A more mechanical game probably makes counters less relevant, because being able to outplay your opponents on micro means the macro (like counterpicks) is not as relevant.

I do play Smite, as well as the upcoming game Paragon.

What you said about it is true, but those games control very differently. As I seem to be getting back into these style games lately I'm sure I'll be playing more of those as well as this.

It was good thought though, I imagine I'd be grateful for it if Smite was new to me.
