The Reasons Runes Aren't Getting Completely Refunded

Meep Man··10 votes·1,759 views
  1. The runes which aren't getting completely refunded you have likely already gotten extensive use out of if you play League of Legends even remotely regularly. Basically, it's not like you just bought them and are getting ripped off. You got to start many games with +9 AD, +9 Armor, +4.5% Movement Speed, and +12 Magic Resist, for example.
  2. The replacement system for Runes is FREE, meaning you won't have to spend the Blue Essence/IP refunded from your old runes to purchase the new runes. If the new runes actually costed Blue Essence/IP, I would 100% be with you guys and say that ALL runes, no matter the date of purchase, deserve a full refund. However, since the new system that provides an equivalent amount of power as current runes (if not more) is free, I can't agree.
  3. IP is an in-game currency. You never spent real money to get runes so I find it hard to say Riot is "ripping me off" for not giving a full IP refund. Furthermore, rune pages, which are also being "refunded" despite not actually being taken away, didn't need to be refunded for the mentioned reason. Any change to in-game currency and things solely purchased with in-game currency will always have at least a decent amount of people irritated, no matter what, unless Riot just gives it out for free. Any changes to the economy of IP will always upset someone, so it's pointless to try and please everyone.

EDIT: Down vote if you like, but I both expected as much and know that the above is the truth. I myself have invested a ton of IP and time into the current Rune system, so it's not like I'm some new dude spouting nonsense because he is hardly being affected by this "refund sweep".

you forgot to mention that some people bought ip boosts to the runes, and now feel ripped off about that. My rebuttal to that arguement is that nobody made them buy the ip boosts, the same way nobody is made to buy exp boosts (although they may become more relevant now)

Meep Man2 votes

I would agree with the IP Boost argument if Runes were the only things you could spend IP on, but that isn't the case. There are many other things that you can spend IP on. In fact, if you subtract the actual amount being refunded from someone's total IP purchases, unless someone literally has every single rune, I think you could make a solid argument that majority of the IP someone spends on League is likely not towards runes, and more towards champions and the select cosmetics that you can get from IP.

Shadòw4 votes

the problem is that the grinding for the old Runes was for nothing.

i mean, the problem was that you needed Runes to play if you didn't want to get shit on, so you had to get them even if you would have liked to spend it on sth else.

Meep Man3 votes

The grinding for the old runes allowed you to play League on an even level with others before the new runes system came out. So unless you are saying that you would have rather played with no runes if the announcement had been made when you first started playing, then I don't agree with that argument.

So unless you are saying

Ok, good, you aren't saying that, which is why I phrased it that way. Then I can't agree with you. The whole idea of being forced to buy anything is a lie in itself. You were never forced to do anything. You were forced to buy runes if you wanted to play League at top level and climb the almost purposeless ranking system in the competitive mode, yes. But to simply enjoy League and do the same thing as everyone else? No. You didn't HAVE TO buy runes. Very few strategies require runes to be able to be played at the minimum efficiency level.

"there was no need to buy runes"

Brother..listen, maybe you understand.. it does not matter what i spent my IP on,(runes, champs, icons etc.)..i bought those things, with ip, which translates with my time. Now, for them taking away those things, and not refunding me..it's disrespectfull towards older players, not caring about our time, about our investment:)..basicly, its not fair

And, they give 100 ip/rune, regardless of the different price they had..basicly, the number of runes matter, not how much ip you invested

Meep Man2 votes

Except they aren't entirely "taking those things away". The new runes are replacements. It's not like Riot is taking them away and saying, "Now go. You get nothing". That would be unfair. But that's not happening. You are getting better, more well designed (I hope) runes, plus a small refund in IP as an extra thank you for your time spent.

Plus, that "time you spent" was time playing League. Now, don't call me a liar if this is false, but did you not enjoy that time?

Shadòw2 votes

No, I'm saying that that was exactly the problem. That you had to get them. But there was nothing exciting in buying these Runes. Nobody got into the shop and said "OMG i can't wait untill I finally unlocked these new Runes". Runes were just needed if you wanted to compete, and nobody enjoyed spending IP on them. You just were forced to grind for them to be able to play.

Every old player knows what it felt like when you had to use your IP you got from endless grinding sessions for Runes instead of some cool new Champions you would have liked to play. I would at least expect to get those IP I needed to force myself to grind for back so I can do with it what I couldn't do back then: Spend it on Champions and other stuff I want.

New players will never know what it feels like to not be able to unlock the stuff you actually want because you had to spend 10000+ IP just to get 2 basic Rune pages. And now we basically don't get anything for having to grind like shit back in the days apart from crappy refund prices.

Meep Man2 votes

You were forced to grind to get them to compete, not play. I played for an entire Season without runes and had fun because a.) I didn't have the IP and b.) I honestly didn't know exactly what they were. This was my first Season playing. I still enjoyed the game. So, if League is for enjoyment, then is something unnecessary for enjoyment needed? Did you really HAVE to get them? No. You got them to compete in the competitive League Ranked Seasons where they were relevant. And, you did compete and make use of the runes you grinded for and, if you did in fact make use of them and play the game well, you were rewarded for purchasing said runes with the end of Ranked Season in-game rewards, which is stuff usually only offered with RP (free skins, ward skins, and the like).

Shadòw2 votes

Well I don't know about you, but I, and pretty much everyone of the community, play this competitive game to compete.

And I don't really get the feeling of enjoyment when I'm getting my ass handed to me just because I lack simple stats.

Runes are necessary, maybe there are some casuals out there who purely play this game for fun, but a competitive is there so players can compete. That's the whole point of the game. For the majority playing League means competing in League.

So there is no denying in that you'll need T3 Runes if you want to play the game right.

Everybody purchased the Runes because they thought the system will never get changed and they are permanent, and new players will have to go through the same struggle.

But this new system is just favoring new players, making it way easier for them to get champions, and never forces them to go through the struggle. And the old players who had to go through the struggle? Well fuck them.

I wouldn't have said anything if it would be a feature of the game I purchased sometime ago which would actually give me enjoyment, like a Champion. Because then you can say that Veterans could enjoy the feature for the years and all. But Runes are just nothing what gave any enjoyment, it was just a necessary thing you had to buy to be able to play/compete in the game at all. So I at least want something more for the hours and hours of grinding back then than not even a 50% refund.

Meep Man2 votes

Wait, stop!

Well I don't know about you, but I, and pretty much everyone of the community, play this competitive game to compete.

If that were true, then everything should be balanced around top tier play because if everyone solely played this game to compete, they wouldn't care if Mastery Yi rampaged through lower games because they would know that it was simply a "skill" thing. No, that's not the case. Furthermore, to compete usually means you are competing FOR something. What are you competing for? The rank? The symbol that comes with it? Because, I can tell you now, most people don't care if you are Bronze or Diamond unless they themselves want some kind of coach to help them become an ESport player. If you want to become an E-Sport player, by the way, ignore everything I just said. However, chances are you aren't wanting that. Maybe it's a dream, but it's not what you are competing for and thinking about when you go into Ranked. No. You play this game to have fun. The thrill of it!

Alright, now that I have that off my chest...

So there is no denying in that you'll need T3 Runes if you want to play the game right.

I think I can go in runeless and be able to have fun in Draft. If you mean compete, yes. You need runes to compete. Similar to how if you want to have a good business that competes, you need money. What I am saying now is this illusion many, not just you, but many have that you need to actively win every single game, crushing everyone and climbing from Bronze to Diamond to enjoy League is false. You don't need that.

Everybody purchased the Runes because they thought the system will never get changed and they are permanent, and new players will have to go through the same struggle.

You see, this is foolish. Where did Riot ever say Runes would never be changed? This game gets changed every patch. Every couple patches an entire system in the game gets changed? Masteries have been reworked like five times or so, and you are going to tell me with a straight face that you believe that Runes would NEVER be changed? They would never be reworked like every other system in the entire game has been? Heck, Riot changes stuff that people buy with ACTUAL MONEY (champions and their skins) and they don't even give ANY refunds for those. Everything in League is subject to change. Riot has stated this multiple times.

This is arguing against what you said. If Runes never gave you enjoyment and you play the game to compete, then why buy them because the only enjoyment you are getting from this game is by winning, and runes make you win more. So if you are playing this game to compete, runes have given you enjoyment because they have enabled you to win.

Because, I can tell you now, most people don't care if you are Bronze or Diamond

Oh boy, you don't know this community. xD The game wouldn't be full of flamers and toxic people if nobody would care about their Rank.

But this is not true at all. Many players are just competing for the sake of competition, including me. Maybe we are not the best and will never be, but already achieving a League we wanted to achieve is something nice too. You don't have to aim for the highest possible skill level.

For many players the real enjoyment of the game comes from actually achieving a "worthless" Rank. When the work you've put into getting better finally pays off and you make it to the next League.

Ofc everybody plays the game for different reasons, but many just play for the sake to compete, no matter what Rank they are. Competing doesn't mean that you'll have to compete for the highest Level.

You don't need that.

Ofc I play games where I just chill and don't tryhard too, but the main part of the game is the one where you actively try to win and climb as high as you can. Well I know it's just a game and it won't get my anything but the satisfication to have reached something in this game, but for me, that's why I play this game. Now ofc there are players like you who purely play for the enjoyment of playing, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that, but for me, the real enjoyment comes with the wins and with getting better. And many players have the same mentality. This can be seen when you just hop into a Ranked and just see how many players actually want to climb, and completely tilt when the game isn't going their way. And that are only the loud players who begin to flame their team when something is not going their way. There are also many players in the games who are silent but also want to climb.

But back to my point, calling it an illusion is wrong I think. I think (or hope at least) that the vast majority knows that they won't get anything from climbing Ranks. It's simply that many players just enjoy the game differently.

You see, this is foolish. Where did Riot ever say Runes would never be changed? This game gets changed every patch. Every couple patches an entire system in the game gets changed? Well but Runes were such an old system of the game that nobody would have thought that they would completely change it. It's different for masteries cause they are actually gameplay related, but Runes were basically just flat stats that were added to champion. There wasn't much variety in there, every champion just took more or less the same Runes every game that were the best for him and the game was balanced around each champion having these extra stats.

The system was broken and not very good, but essential to the games balance so that's why I wouldn't have thought they would change it.

But what basically happens now is that every champion will get extra stats equivalent to the Runes he would have taken, which basically means that the stats you needed to buy runes for are now on every champion for free. And the actual Runes system is more of a revamped and more impactful mastery system. (less stat oriented, and more gameplay/decision/playstyle oriented)

I think they are just removing the rune system now and adding the stats to each champion because now it would be a good time for it because they are already changing a lot of the pregame system, but the new "Rune" system is actually just a new Mastery system and could also have coexisted with the old stat runes.

Well I don't oppose the new system, I like it actually a lot tbh, but I think they still could have given the veteran players who had to deal with this overpriced rune system for years a little bit more.

It won't be worlds end for me if it stays that way, I "just" have 6 Rune pages and not that much Runes compared to other players, but I also think about players who invested a lot in the system.

Especially think of all the players who came to the conclusion last year that they wanted to invest a lot into Runes to have one page for every situation. Players who have bought many pages and the differentest kinds of Runes. Players that spend ten, maybe hundred-thousands of IP on Runes in Season 6 only to find out now that it was all basically useless. I think that especially such kind of players should get more than just a crappy refund. Everything else just isn't fair imo.

The game wouldn't be full of flamers and toxic people if nobody would care about their Rank.

Yeah it's really weird how it is isn't it? People love to boast their rank and care a lot about getting it, but if I was, say, Diamond and I went up to anyone and said "Hey, I'm Diamond Rank in League of Legends", almost no one would care. However, the exact same person that doesn't care about someone's else's rank is probably someone who would curse out someone for doing poorly in their promotion games.

But this is not true at all. Many players are just competing for the sake of competition, including me. Maybe we are not the best and will never be, but already achieving a League we wanted to achieve is something nice too. You don't have to aim for the highest possible skill level.

Admirable. We have different view points on this matter however. I don't think I have ever "competed to simply compete". Especially if it means getting angry over something like, say, the rune refunds. It just doesn't seem worth it if that's what it causes me to do.

I still think it is an illusion. I don't think it's worth the emotional investment. However, if you believe it is, I can't stop you. I just wish I could change people's minds that the whole Runes Refund thing is as unfair as they say. Is it a little unfair? Eh, maybe. But it's not worth all the commotion people are making over it.

Everything is subject to change. It's important to know that in this game. Never think anything else. Also, while the old rune system could work with the new rune system, it would defeat the purpose of merging Runes with Masteries in the first place and that is to simplify the pre-game systems. There's no point in having two pre-game systems when you could simplify the matter and just make it all one system.

Well I don't oppose the new system, I like it actually a lot tbh, but I think they still could have given the veteran players who had to deal with this overpriced rune system for years a little bit more.

I too feel bad for those that invested a ton into runes near the end of Season 6, but it's just something that is a bit of a can of worms there. Unless they just completely refund the entire Rune system (which they can't do with the new Runes being free since then everyone would use the IP they gained to purchase tons of champions and make Riot lose a ton of money and a business's aim is to make money, sorry to many who seem to think otherwise), SOMEONE is going to get screwed in the end. It's the luck of the draw and luck can be unfair. Riot could do a huge elaborate system to make it so people who did X during X time get more of a refund, but people who did X get a certain X refund, but it would be pointless and a waste of resources. In the end, someone is going to complain anyways. We can pity those who got dealt a bad hand, but in the end it's just that. A bad hand in a video game for a currency that is almost entirely unconnected from real life, actual cash. It's just not worth the anger people are having over it.

Yes, that's what I think too, but it's actually not really merging 2 systems in one, it's more like that the old Rune system gets removed, and every champion will get flat stats instead, while the current Mastery system gets renamed "Runes". They just are removing classic "stat Runes" now, because with these huge changes coming to the Mastery system, it's the optimal time to do what should have been done long ago.

I too feel bad for those that invested a ton into runes near the end of Season 6, but it's just something that is a bit of a can of worms there. But would Riot really make losses if they would refund all Runes? I mean, it's still only Ingame money, as you said. Especially veteran players, the ones who would profit from that, usually don't even think of buying champions with RP. Riots main source of money is and will always be skins. And that would be completely unaffected.

I just think that the runes should be completely refunded, so in the end everybody has the amount of IP which he should have depending on the amount of time invested in the game. It should simply be handled as if the old Rune system never existed, and as no player ever needed to purchase a Rune. So if a player invested a lot of time in the game, he should be able to spend the IP he earned in all those games to his enjoyment.

Especially because Riot has often said that they don't want their customers regret what they bought. But I think that many players, especially those who just bought a lot of Runes last year, are at exactly that point now.

It might just be ingame money, but, as with real money, you still need to invest time to make it. Grinding for ingame money in a game might not be nearly as tiring as real work (you still should have had your fun in this games), but it still was your time that you decided to invest into Riot's game. And this time should be equally for everyone rewarded with the ingame money.

But many of the people now are going to lose a big part of those rewards because they decided to invest it in Runes.

I just think that Riot should give a full refund, among other things to thank their veteran players, and celebrate the new system and the new season with the upcoming preseason essence-shop with their players who have been here for quite a while, or maybe even since the start. Because of the Blue Essence and IP merge, and the Rune refunds on top of that, everybody who didn't just start will have more than usual ingame money anyway. The shop is supposed to be a one in the lifetime event for the game where you can buy many exclusive and non-exclusive things from a variety of things with the big amount of ingame money everybody would have. But everyone should have the amount he is supposed to have, without some players getting punished more than others, and be able to spend his well-earned IP in this shop how he wants. This would basically be my opinion on the topic.

Meep Man1 votes

Oh well, we have differing opinions on the matter. I can agree with most you said, except that it's as big a deal as it is. I personally think once the new season comes and the refunds happen, people will slowly stop complaining because they will get a ton of IP anyways, especially since your current Blue Essence is essentially getting multiplied by 6.5 and then added in as IP.

In the end, it's Riot's decision and it's not as big a deal as people think in my opinion. I'm starting to think pointing this out isn't worth the effort anyways. People will just naturally realize it once it occurs and only the really sour part of the community will care. It's been nice having an actual conversation.

Shadòw1 votes

All in all I'm hyped for preseason anyway. It's not that much of a big deal for me personally, because, like I said, I don't own that much runes and it's been a while since I bought them. It's just somewhere sad for the players who get screwed over completely I think. Especially the Warwick mains who might end up not having enough Essence in the end for the URFwick skins because of that.

But yes, it will end up that people will be silent after some weeks if Riot decides they want to keep it like this anyway. It has been like that with basically everything, the only exception I can think of is the DynamicQ disaster from Season 6.

Even if we have different opinions, that still way a nice conversation! I'm having that far too rarely on this boards xD

Ok sure but why3 votes

we spent RP on the IP boosts and rune pages, though

Linna Excel1 votes

While I think that this is a fair argument, spending real money on IP was a questionable action. Still, maybe riot could consider refunding RP that's separate from refunding IP.

Cloud2732 votes

Riot has been more than fair to old players. You guys have skins that newer players will NEVER be able to get (Pax skins, black alistar, king rammus, etc). You should be thankful for that.

GamblerOfLives1 votes

you are wrong..people who invested in runes, should get properly compensated for their hard work..it was mandatory to buy runes, in order to play on an optimal level. we were forced to buy runes, in order to get the most out of the game. still, regardless of why people bought runes (collections, requirements for the game etc.)..it's not ok to not refund them..we spent time, ip, to grind those runes.. and 100ip/rune..not only that it's not fair, but, it makes no sense, considering runes have different prices..we should not get refunded base on the number of runes we have, but, on the amount of ip invested;)

Secondly, i hear this alot..that we used them. But, we purchased the runes, not for a limited time, but permanent..this was the deal.

Also, the new reforged runes, is more for the new players..older players don;t benefit at all..we all had to work for runes, in order to play the game at an optimal level..they changed that, and made runes free for everybody. new players , won''t have to grind like old players. It comes at the expense of old players.

which is ok, i am completely fine with the game moving forward..they had to change the rune system:)..but, don't disregard the players who invested time and ip into runes..it's not fair towards us..

Meep Man3 votes

I am once of those players and still don't see the issue. We invested time, but that was to be able to play League during all of those seasons before this new system. So, as I said below, unless you are saying you wouldn't have purchased runes if you knew everything you knew today back when you first started purchasing runes, then I can't agree with you. Also...

I think it's for every player. New runes benefits new players by opening up new strategies and refreshing the game. It benefits new players by removing the IP grind. That's both crowds benefiting unless you hate the idea of news strategies and a refreshed game, which is strange to me.

We dont need full crit pages, energy runes, gold per 5 runes etc. They were IP sinks and we enjoyed using them but due to depreciation the buyback value of each runes decays because of our time spent using them. I dont see why it would make a point of giving back full value. You spent IP on luxury runes.

We dont need full crit pages, energy runes, gold per 5 runes etc. They were IP sinks and we enjoyed using them but due to depreciation the buyback value of each runes decays because of our time spent using them. I dont see why it would make a point of giving back full value. You spent IP on luxury runes.

Season 4 player here..you actually needed back than lifesteal in runes:)

If you play ADC, you need AS If you play Assassin , you need lethality

If you are vs full ad team, you need CDR (more optimal)

etc.

Runes are part of the game..not a luxury item

Look, now it's just funny to me. A business? Really. Cause a business is made to make a profit? What is your profit? And yes, I am calling EVERYONE, not just you, childish for such thinking.

Look, never mind. This is a waste of my attention. You can consider this a win if you want. There is no purpose or meaningful resolution to be had here.

"It's my bussiness why i play the game" --this means, that nobody should care why i play the game:)

And you thought i literally meant bussiness:O ..WOW

Consider what a win?? i just stated facts, and you were trying to argue them:)..it's like me telling you the sky is blue, and you wanna argue with me about it:)

Fact?

you are wrong..people who invested in runes, should get properly compensated for their hard work..it was mandatory to buy runes, in order to play on an optimal level. we were forced to buy runes, in order to get the most out of the game. still, regardless of why people bought runes (collections, requirements for the game etc.)..it's not ok to not refund them..we spent time, ip, to grind those runes.. and 100ip/rune..not only that it's not fair, but, it makes no sense, considering runes have different prices..we should not get refunded base on the number of runes we have, but, on the amount of ip invested;)

This is all an opinion you believe is fact. That's why I call you a wall. You believe your opinion is fact. Hence, no reason to further argue. Also, your use of autism as an insult only seems to further prove that you are childish.

It's not a fact if you can disagree with it. And it's childish to use retarted/autistic as an insult because there are those that do in fact have autism and have to deal with it for the rest of their lives. It's not a joke or an insult. It's something serious.

you dissagree with math:). -fact

Meep Man1 votes

I disagree that your math actually matters since you saying it's unfair someone gets slightly more IP than you is childish. 1000 IP is not a lot. That's the difference for the example you provided.

so, it's fair for him to get more than me? like 2 times more..not slightly more;)

Meep Man1 votes

In the example you gave:

if you have 20 runes (410ip each) and i have 10 runes (820ip each)

It is 1000 more IP. 1000 IP is not a lot. I can get that much in maybe 2-3 days of playing, which isn't a lot in LoL. A LOT of IP is maybe 4500+. That's a couple weeks. However, that is a ginormous difference in runes that, heck, they probably deserve it and probably spent more IP than you. Twice as much isn't a lot if it's only a little to begin with.

No, I'm not "actually retarded". What a silly question to be asking seriously.

I don't think there are 200 Runes in this game by the way?

let me put this in a real scenario

i have 9 runes(820 each) that means that i invested 7380 ip you have 9 runes(410each) that means you invested 3690 ip

we bot receive 900 ip for them:)

is this fair?

Meep Man1 votes

Well, let's make this more clear then. Why did you purchase the 820 IP runes instead of the 410 IP runes? Was it because they were better? Was it because you simply wanted to do a silly strategy and have fun (Energy Runes and the like)? Either way, you knew you were making either an inefficient purchase or were purchasing runes you knew were better than the 410 IP runes when you bought them. If the latter, this gave you an advantage over the 410 IP person (in this case me I guess) while the old system was in place, meaning your purchase and therefore the refund is fair, because in the end you traded IP for having an advantage more often than the person with 410 IP.

Here is a list of rune prices: http://leagueoflegends.wikia.com/wiki/List_of_runes#Armor_Penetration

As you can see, most 820 IP runes are more "luxury" runes by the way, outside of Health related Seals.

Look closer.

I did.

And you are one of the most ignorant people I've encountered on this forum, completely ignoring what I say even if it answers your very questions, just not exactly how you wanted it to be answered.

And I don't understand your P.S.. The pricing of runes doesn't determine their value, they do different things? Doesn't that statement contradict itself? If they do different things, then doesn't pricing determine their value? Also, did you completely ignore my link? That statement is either wrong or needs further explanation.

Good luck in life dude. Don't get into a job that requires any form of debate.

Meep Man1 votes

Can you blame me not understanding you? You explain opinions like they are fact or just don't entirely explain what you are saying when you say it, expecting me to think exactly like you do when it's clear I don't since we are arguing about it.

Meep Man1 votes

No, I understand this. You're likely just continuing to apply that I have some mental disease for not agreeing with you, which is honestly just a revelation of the kind of person I've been foolishly trying to talk to all this time or at least convince that saying it's unfair for somebody to get more IP than them is meaningless to get worked up over in the long run. I gotta go drink some coffee or something, the headache I'm getting from this might just give me some mental illness.

We are talking about IP, a fantasy currency in a video game not related to real life purchases. Not cash. There is a huge difference there.

When I was ready to play and had all my runes finally set up, my PC crashed and i haven't had the money since to buy a new one. Now after years i get back with a new PC hoping to enjoy this game without the hardware problems of the past, just to see that all my struggel in the past to get those runes was for naugt just FYI ...
