You must own the champion in order to earn its mastery chest or key fragments

...WHY?!

Why even have the mastery system in ARAM if you can't earn rewards for that champ simply because it was free week? If you performed well enough to get the rewards on a champ you don't own, doesn't that show more proficiency? Why lock it to ownership at all, what's the point?

Because they want you to either A) Burn your BE to prevent it from accumulating or B) Burn real $$$ to own the champion.

So that players have to play to get chests. Play to get IP, more IP = More Champions, More Champions = More Chests

There's no difference between playing a champ on free week and playing a champ you own. You're obviously still playing the game.

There is. Free week champions can be abused in a way where you can constantly get free chests without buying champions. Key fragments I get, but I don't think you should be able to get chests.

You can only get one chest per champ per season, and you still have to perform at a level that earns you chests... on a champ you have to learn to play while it's on free week. Like, who the fuck is abusing the free week rotation, nailing down the S ranks? Come on.

Like, I don't understand what your argument is here. You're playing the champ. You're playing the champ at a level that would be rewarded if you owned the champ. That seems to imply that you're playing a lot. The only difference is that you didn't spend the X amount of imaginary, virtually useless currency to acquire that champion.

You have to own something to master it. End of story lol.

"Mastery" is a neat name, but let's be real-- it has very little to do with mastering a champ.

Yeah, this drives me crazy. I got Master Yi in an All for One once and went something like 15/2 on my first time playing him and got an S- even though we lost. I can't help they picked a champion I didn't own. Why can't I get points for it?

Do you get it if you buy the champion after?

You can still get mastery points and level up mastery (to a max of 4 on unowned champs I believe), so thats a reason to have the mastery system in other modes, plus some people just like getting grades for the sake of grades.

The key fragment part of that message is kinda a leftover from the old honour fragment system, you'll still get key frags even if you play exlcusively free week stuff these days.
