Why Riot? You've done NOTHING major to nautilus in years, why nerf him now?

Please Note: I am aware that the nerfs on nautilus are merely PBE changes, however this is to address the issue that they chose to nerf, somone who hasn't been buffed in eons over buffing someone/something else.

And obviously, I'm a naut jg main, but I'll try to be as unbiased as possible.

Most people are likely aware of Nautilus' recent spike in popularity as a top lane pick in the pro scene, and the success the champion is bringing with his time in the spotlight. However instead of choosing to buff certain items/champions to better deal with him, riot has decided to long shot Naut with a nerf gun.

BUT WHY? Why nerf a champion, who has only received minor tweaks and NO! buffs whatsoever in 2 years. Nautilus' current strength is a product of other champions being nerfed/banned (looking at you fiora and morgana). As he's remained, pretty much the same champion since I started playing him serially like 2.5-->3 years ago. So what exactly, is so strong about Naut top? NOTHING! Recent item changes haven't made him a more viable top laner, the sunfire cape buff was only to minions/monsters so that didn't increase his strength, whatsoever and it certainly wasn't the addition of expose weakness.

Nautilus isn't strong, everyone else is simply weak as rat piss.

To emphasize, on the absence of any buffs naut has received over the last few years, here are the 3 most recent patches which contained naut changes;

5.13 = A flat out nerf to his E, if I recall correctly it was to address his strength as a support. Which only came to be because of constant morgana nerfs over several patches, as nautilus lacked the damage to pop her black shield. DAMAGE ON FIRST WAVE: 60/100/140/180/220 ⇒ 60/95/130/165/200 MAX DAMAGE: 90/150/210/270/330 ⇒ 90/142.5/195/247.5/300

5.5 = Merely a stat reassignment in order to shift some of the strength in his W to his E. Aimed at making him a less binary champion in terms of damage output. W Titans Wrath
DAMAGE: 40/55/70/85/100 magic damage ⇒ 30/40/50/60/70 damage RATIO: 7/9.5/12/14.5/17% max health ⇒ 9/11/13/15/17% max health E Rip Tide
COOLDOWN: 10 seconds at all ranks ⇒ 7/6.5/6/5.5/5 seconds COST: 60/70/80/90/100 mana ⇒ 40/50/60/70/80 mana RATIO: 0.5 ability power ⇒ 0.3 ability power SLOW DURATION: 2 seconds ⇒ 1.5 seconds

5.1 = Yet another stat reassignment however I personally viewed this as a decent nerf to his early game. W BASE SHIELD STRENGTH: 100/150/200/250/300 ⇒ 65/70/75/80/85 SHIELD SCALING: 15% bonus health ⇒ 7/9.5/12/14.5/17% maximum health

Now then, patch 5.13 was released on the 8th of july last year. Naut hasn't received any changes since then. And the only Drastic change was way back in 2014 patch 4.17 where his hook was changed so that it could interact with champion made terrain while his last buffs were way back in patch 4.4, march 18th 2014.

So why riot, would you even consider nerfing a champion who has received nothing but tweaks or nerfs for nearly 2 years? Why not buff champions with %max HP of enemy champion based spells? or maybe a slight BOTRK buff?

As I said in another thread:

http://boards.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/c/gameplay-balance/qIv9fXBH-so-after-rammus-and-malphite-nautilus-has-become-one-of-the-best-top-laners

"In the Meta's current state, there is absolutely no reason to touch naut unless they are desperately trying to maintain this 'ADC Meta'.

Rammus is in a similar boat, he's a niche champ you pick against heavy AD comps, while naut is picked when your team lacks beef/CC/Peel. And look at this meta we have here? Potentially 4 ADC/1 support compositions are perfectly viable along with most hard-to-peel assassins useful in most compositions. As a champion he INITIALLY only ever saw pro play as support, after morg was nerfed out of the meta (as his spells lacked the dmg to pop her black shield and he is CC reliant) and he has received rather small tweaks over the last few years to help him adjust to the new, more powerful jungle monsters, which has left him in a pretty balanced jungle state. Only reason I can see him dominating top lane is fiora being banned nearly every-game (I know I do it) and champs with tank shred spells like vayne, gnar, mundo, trundle, varus and zac, not really fitting into the current champion pool as well as the %hp dmg spells feeling rather lacklustre.

If they have to touch anything in relation to naut TOP I'd rather see them maybe give a small buff to botrk or small buffs to %hp dmg spells on some of the top laners like the ones above. As this would make it allot harder for him to thrive in the top lane, as he is a HP based tank(his core spell, W scales with HP) while not affecting his jungle clear/ganks at all.

Hopefully they can find a healthy solution and get him out of the spotlight before Challenger wannabes start insta-locking my bae. "

Nautilus' current top strength is not the product of any buffs or item changes. It is the product of tank shredding champions, bruisers and lane bullies being nerfed to the point at which naut, a relatively weak solo lane champion, can safely lane and duel lane bullies like poppy. There is only one champion, in this entire game, that has managed to shred my HP down to zero in no time at all recently, and that's anivia, a DOT mage and potentially the next Brand. I would count fiora, but she's become less common recently and is banned nearly every ranked game I play. [zombie-brand-mindblown]

The proposed E nerf on the PBE will not only cut naut down to size in every lane, making it much harder for those who wish to 'break the meta' to do so, it will also have a rather hefty cost on the titans' already slow, early jungle clear times. So again I ask, why not buff some of the %hp based champions above? I mean, they clearly need the buffs as they aren't used in pro play, isn't that how we balance this game? sarcasm over :P

But there wouldn't be much point to this without some form of constructive solution suggestions, so it's party time;

Buff Zac: As another utility tank, a buff to Zac's W %hp damage would not only allow him to duel and out-class naut and other top lane tanks (yeah, that's right fiora) , but it wouldn't have nearly as big an impact on squishy champs simply strengthening him as a lane bully/utility tank.

Buff BOTRK: Even in it's prime, very few champs out of the entire champion pool actually used this item effectively. Some include kog, vayne, yi, trundle, volibear, gnar, warwick, udyr, yasuo and zed. Would you look at that? 5 champs with spells that allowed/allow ( in yi's case) them to shred tanks. Both vayne and gnar received nerfs to their %hp based damage as well as indirect nerfs from the BOTRK nerf. With no compensation buffs in response. Trundle, udyr and volibear, the Icy ones in particular made a better use of tri force than BOTRK and haven't received much attention while udyr, also a more efficient tri force than BOTRK user, saw pro play when combined with devourer, and then came the nerfs.

Buff vayne; That's right, I went there, buff the true damage, tank shredding turd of a marksman. I will admit I was happy to see her destroyed amidst the tank meta, however riot did to her, what they did to sejuani, an unforgivable offence. Nerfed her core item, and the champion herself without any compensation post nerf to keep her viable (Yes I am aware she is viable atm with a crit based/atk speed build) . If there's one champ, anyone can count on, to ruin a nautilus top, jg, support, what ever positions' day. It's vayne.

Buff rumble: We've seen the intended rumble nerfs to his ult, which make absolutely no logical sense. However I feel this DOT based bruiser mage is 100% capable of putting a naut through hell with constant lane shoving to match nautilus' splash dmg, high early game base damages to shred his shield and then his build naturally containing the AP tank shred item. A minor buff to flame spitter or to his shield would allow him to trade aggressively, but it would have to be small/cautious as the last thing I want is rumble tipped into broken mode.

I would say buff liandries, however with the current state of anivia any stat buff would tip her well over the broken wall. Perhaps a cost reduction would be more appropriate?

And lastly varus, I honestly have no bloody clue as to what could be changed on varus without damaging his stable status as a marksman.

So what are your thoughts? Got some more interesting ideas that I've missed? are my ideas retarded? I don't mind KrakenKnight out [slayer-pantheon-thumbs]

Nautilus strength at toplane is not recent, it started after change from a year ago, only now grasp made him completely out of hand.

The real cause of problem is as always Riot's special love to certain champs - if we want Naut to be barely able to survive enemy Lee Sin's in jungle, he needs to be buffed so hard he wrecks as top or support.

Topnaut needs nerf right now, but current PBE nerf seems very harsh, it's 50 damage on good lvl5 Riptide, a spell that he spams. I doubt that he will be able to stay viable in any lane, and if, he will be only playable at top, as average or below-average pick.

I might be wrong though, he might still be OK at top(definitely no more jungle nauts), right now when I play topnaut I often top my carries damage dealt with ease, so cuts are surely justified, I'm just not sure that with such a severe cut he will be able to lane successfully vs most toplaners.

TheSingularity2 votes

How would you nerf him then? As his passive+W are core. Mana cost increase on E perhaps instead of dmg nerf?

Zero Skill Tank2 votes

I'm really not sure, if we cut damage to Riptide we might put some more on Dredge Line to compensate, so he is more reliant on landing that and it gives enemies opportunity to outplay it. But it still is bad as he needs his shield 2nd.

TheSingularity1 votes

Yeah. I can understand the E spam on a low CD/mana cost being to stronk top, and putting some damage onto q from E would work perfectly in the top lane balance situation, however any damage decrease on the E is gonna be such a public boner to deal with in the jungle.

maybe make it so it does slightly increased damage to monsters like maybe 10% that would almost fully compensate

What if Naut shield made him receive only 50% damage from jungle mobs?

That wouldn't touch his laning power at all.

Billy VoHagen1 votes

That's fucking insane. Let's say 75%.

.>Naut has a 55% winrate .>Lee Sin has a 46% winrate .>omg the real problem is that riot is unwilling to nerf Lee Sin

lol, taking the circlejerk to the next level. lets all keep pretending that Lee Sin is a good champion guys. Freelo like naut, shyv, janna, etc. only has a 55% winrate because riot won't gut Lee Sin. it has nothing to do with those champs or their itemization or roles in the meta being too effective. it's totally Lee Sin's fault and riot's for not gutting him.

It's not what is NOW, it's what happened a year ago when Riot buffed Naut so hard he instantly became top-tier support, because he no longer needed any gold to function. Sole reason for that were champions with absurdly powerful early game, mainly Lee Sin.

Lee was bad in soloq throughout Season 5 as well. For the longest time he's only ever been a good pick when pros are picking him. Lee hasn't been winning not even 50% of the time with experienced players for a very long time now. Sure Lee is very annoying and his kit has a lot, but you and others are giving him too much power indirectly by having a mindset that he's unstoppable.

Damage is the correct thing to hit, though. He's never been about doing damage at any stage of the game. He's always been the tank you pick when you want to lock people down. And he does this between the constant slows, the three forms of cc and any items he buys to compound that.

I LOVE Nautilus. But when I see he's getting a damage nerf, I'm just thankful it wasn't them targeting his CC instead.

JSTIN82 votes

While you are right about not being about damage, it should be noted that his jungle clear is weak enough as it stands. To simply nerf his E damage and offer nothing for his jungle is to practically remove him from the game if they arent careful.

Nanuk Pihoqahiak3 votes

This can be easily corrected by making any of his abilities, probably his E, do bonus damage to monsters as a compensation to his jungle. Heck, it could even be used to outright buff his jungle since he's fallen out of favor there.

WadeWilson13376 votes

Toplane Nautilis is a problem. Its not something that should be allowed to happen. His kit has too much cc and hes far too tanky for him to be this unkillable blob that can 1v3 with how insanely tanky he gets and the sheer amounts of damage he can do in a teamfight along with him having the most peel in the entire game, arguably even more than Janna. Nautilus has been problematic due to his kit for ages, and quite frankly, if you kill top lane naut, you kill jungle naut. I wish jungle nautilus was viable, but i understand in order for that to happen he would be broken as support and toplane. You cant really nerf his cc because then you ruin the entire reason to play him. If you nerf his shield, well that blows for support Nautilus quite a bit. Nerfing his damage is probably the best solution to keep Support Nautilus in an okay spot, but quite frankly, as he is my 3rd most played champion, i will be dropping him from my champion pool once the nerf goes live. There just wont be much reason to play him at that point.

TheSingularity2 votes

Slight botrk buff, pick olaf and irelia into it or buy merc treads first B. Soz, I'm bein arrogant, but there just seems to be so many ways around it, if they took the time to balance a whole lot of champions around an item buff as opposed to taking the 3 seconds to go 'he won a few games in the pro scene, well f*ck that turn him into sejuani'

JSTIN81 votes

"Unkillable blob" Once late game rolls around I suppose but there are a lot of tanks with that under their belt "Can 1v3" You dont play naut, like, at all, do you? "Sheer amounts of damage" If you ignore him and give him a couple of years than he just starts to do damage that can be described as "good enough" 3rd most played champion and I can only assume you havent played him since season 2 with all these comments. Having trouble in lane? Pick Darius and dunk him. Difficulty late game? A good flank on his back line instead of ramming full speed into his welcoming embrace does wonders. Early game his damage is nonexistent and he falls off hard if you make him fall behind because he lacks the durablility to continuously pump out his cc and damage. You are spot on about his state of balance between jung support and top though, I'll give you that.

WadeWilson13371 votes

3rd most played champion actually. In a sustained teamfight, as the unkillable blob and high cdr, his e can do pretty insane amounts of damage if it hits multiple people. I would say 1 in 4 or 5 games on him i get 1st or second in damage as support. He has the highest winrate in the entire game and is a contested top lane pick in higher elo at the moment. Hes a problem whether you acknowledge that or not.

JSTIN82 votes

Yes, his E does great damage in teamfights, WITH HIGH CDR AND WHEN HE HAS REACHED HIS LATEGAME TANK STATUS. And again, there are many with these same titles under their belt as well. In order to reach this, you need CDR items, Mana items, and still your key hp and tank items, all of which take a while to get, escpecially on a supports average gold income. This still does not explain how naut still gets crushed by lane bullies. (I mean REAL lane bullies, graves top does not count). Literally every juggernaut riot has made thus far can take a big ol shit on him at any stage in the game, with special mention for the Dunkmaster Darius.

WadeWilson13371 votes

E is the first ability you max. If "Late game tank status" means level 9 doing 200 aoe damage, then sure, late game tank status. Nautilus can build frozen heart or iceborn to fix his mana, give him 20% cdr (how convenient), while also obviously giving him either alot of damage or an attack speed debuff to benefit his team. HP isnt exactly hard to come by on a tank...not sure why you think saying a tank needs item is even necessary.

Funny you mention Darius considering Nautilus has a 52.51% winrate against him. The main "lane bully" right now is Quinn and to an extent Teemo. Nautilus dumpsters Quinn due to her squishiness and he actually sits at a flat 50% winrate against Teemo. So this lane bully philsophy is quite flawed, especially when Renekton is weak at the moment and awaiting pbe buffs. His lowest winrate matchup is Kayle, and thats only at 48% which isnt exactly dumpstered. But yes, big ol shits upon Nautilus. I think youre tilted and defending a champion just because you dont want him to be nerfed. Its unfortunate he abuses top lane as i like him in support, but he needs to be dealt with one way or another, and damage is the best way to fix him as a solo laner.

CoolKnightST4 votes

I actualy would hate riot if these changes go live. His support position was already in danger. If this goes live we will never see a nautilus support ever again... I honnestly can agrea his damage output will rather high but add least they could compensate it by buffing something else what would make it harder for him to maintain the same damage output like:

  • Buff the damage on his W:
    • This would helps him with his jungle clears
    • This will have little to no impact on his support role since an adc would kit out most of the damage anyway
    • In toplane it's still strong but since his burst does down range, matchups will be stronger against him

Alternatively why not simply increase the mana cost of his E? If the spam was so a problem why not punish him harder to use it...

The pbe changes don't make sence add all...

Fair enough, but I think Blitzcrank is still an exception that should have his primary role changed to support.

Blitzcrank isn't the only exception, though, there are lots of champions that are played in a role that doesn't match with their champion classification. For example, RekSai as a tank, Annie as a support, Gragas as a tank, Nunu as a tank, etc.

Penns1 votes

I actually didnt see Nautilus is played as support in 1/3 of his games so Ill kinda take that back. But I still think 5-25 damage less wont matter that much and was definitely justified considering his damage as full tank.

SpecterVonBaren1 votes

I don't think this would change much. I actually max W first when I play Naut top just because I don't like the large mana consumption from maxing E and I still do fine with him. I think this is entirely a situation that's only the way it is because of the meta and how Naut works in it.

Aaravos4 votes

The nerfs are deserved for lane Nautilus, however they should help his early jungle clear to compensate with an incrased damage against monsters. But we all know it won't happen because it's riot.

EcchiOtakuTM4 votes

It's called meta shift, Naut is overbearingly strong in this meta >55% win rate with >10% play rate. He needs a nerf.

He does need a compensation buff to jungle/supp though. And I can't propose how, unless they made W or E do bonus damage to monsters, while for support that's up in the air.

JSTIN82 votes

He doesnt need a nerf, Riot needs to sit on their hands while we sort out having 3-4 ADCs a game. If you honestly expect me to belive that NAUT is the most pressing matter, then dump your head in a bucket of cold water so you can think clearly. Naut is only viable because teams need someone to bring the CC all these ADCs lack, and Naut is fitting his niche as he should be. Just like the surge in rammus. Just like the surge in Malphite.

EcchiOtakuTM3 votes

I am thinking clearly, naut is a highly popular top laner over 55% win rate and useful for most team comps and unlike malph/rammus isn't mostly anti-ad. The meta highly favors him atm and he needs a nerf cause of it.

JSTIN81 votes

He is useful because in a team with graves jung corki mid and luc bot lane you need someone to sit up front and dish out CC, and Naut is the exact champ with that role in mind. To nerf Naut right now would be like nerfing Veigar for doing well against Squishy APs late, or Rammus for his strength against Aforementioned ADCs. YOU said it yourself, its a meta shift, and one that is currently bent over backwords and horrifically broken. IF we need to give naut a lovetap, we should wait until this mess sorts itself out, especially when people havent even had the light of day to figure out how to play against him toplane. (hint, the juggernauts shit all over him). And, as has always been pointed out by people with much more experience than me, WINRATE OFTENTIMES MEANS JACK SHIT.

EcchiOtakuTM1 votes

Yea win rates mean jack shxt but high win rate+play rate(high play rates should have a lower win rate) mean something needs nerfing if you didn't know, not only that but his win rate is over 55%, the most a win rate should be is 52%, while 53% needs to be monitored but to go all the way to 55%+ is an issue.

(Only exception is our janna who's secret OP but never feels oppressive but more of an "of course" type of thing xD, don't think she'll ever be nerfed even if it's obvious why she's god tier.)

blfUvZ8Ybu4 votes

No.Buff ap carries. (except Lux, Ahri, Lulu, Liss)

JSTIN83 votes

I feel like this is a pick we need to give time for the meta to adapt to. He has been popular top for less than a patch before riot already has nerfs out on the PBE (meanwhile graves...) And the pros havent even had enough time to change their playstyles accordingly. Remember how anivia became really popular because she birdhandles juggernauts? 5 dollars says the pros start picking darius into top lane naut and just demolish him. Or any other typical lane bully like panth or riven. Give it time before you nerf one of the best balanced champs in game.

ZT Xperimentor3 votes

'How would I handle nautilus' popularity'? By doing nothing; he's not nearly as oppressive as other frequently seen champions like; graves, fiora, zed, quin, lucian, vayne, ext. As usual riot is deliberately stalling and skewing the game away from the gaming community, in favor of esports which is a huge mistake.

NineTailedMystic3 votes

Why not just reduce E base damage but give it bonus damage to monsters? You don't pick him support for his damage you pick for his CC. This would only really hurt top Naut while potentially buffing jungle Naut if the bonus damage is high enough.

Malicious Metal3 votes

I'd say nerfing his E damage while BUFFING his Titan's wrath damage would do the trick.

A shift from "burst" to sustained damage.

Well you see Riot hates mega tanks and will do anything in there power to defeat them in nerf combat.

However its still 100% better then seeing Fiora/Quinn/Graves top lane. At least they freaking team fight.

I don't really see these nerfs as necessary when i have faced a toplane naut he really hasn't been a problem. Sure he has CC, but i just dodged it because it is not all that hard to see him doing it in a solo lane where you can focus all your attention on him. I have beaten him in lane as sion who also is not the strongest toplane. All you have to do is be more carefull when you face a toplane naut.

Nautilus Hello darkness, my old friend

PapaGreg212 votes

Actually Nautilus was nerfed quite a bit a year ago. They nerfed the damage on his w back in 5.5 and hurt his offense pretty bad so that you couldn't build much AP on him anymore. His e damage was also nerfed when they lowered the cooldown on it, which helps to clear camps but is worse for ganks.

xSleepy2 votes

the 5.5 change you listed with the reduced cooldown on his e is specifically what put him into pro play. I remember because I was so excited to see it happen, LemonNation played him on support and ended up with more kills than Sneaky. He's past due for a nerf, he has been too strong for too long. He's able to put out inordinate amounts of cc with high base damage and medium cooldowns, and his tank scaling is immense. i'm not saying he's entirely broken, but there's some room for balance

SpecterVonBaren2 votes

The reason he's so good top is because he's good at dealing with hyper mobility while also being too tanky to be burst down. Since so many people are playing squishy ADC's or Assassins, Naut is a good pick for top since he can get on top of these champs and CC lock them while he smacks them around, and if he has his Jungler with him then it can be a guaranteed kill too.

Apocyliptic1 votes

So Buff every other top laner instead of nerfing one? That's not how it works... Your asking Riot to completely re balance the game because ONE champion is a problem.

Nobody was asking for Every other champion to be buffed instead of nerfing Udyr, and for good reason. It makes no logical sense.

Now, I know these boards have a hard on for tanks, but let's be real here, the fact that such a post didn't get downvoted, other than the work you put into it, is embarassing.

TheSingularity1 votes

Actually I am asking that either 2-3 top laners have their %hp based spell buffed a tad (eg zac, gnar, trundle), or buff BOTRK and tweak champs post buff to keep them in line (yi for example)

Sasogwa1 votes

It's extremely simple. Increase E cooldown.

Xeynid1 votes

You make some valid points, and I'm not saying you don't. But "You haven't directly buffed Nautilus in a long time" is one of the stupidest reasons as to why a champion shouldn't be nerfed. League of legends isn't a single player game. All champions power levels only matter in terms of how powerful they are relative to each other, not how powerful they are singularly.

If other champions have been nerfed or reworked or the meta has shifted or new items/masteries have been released, it's entirely plausible that a champion like Nautilus could end up relatively overpowered without he himself being touched.
