If Thresh having a 48% winrate means he is "not that good" then why is his pickrate 40%

AND WHY HAS IT BEEN 40% FOR THE PAST 2+YEARS

Because he's really fun. People want to pretend they're Madlife. And he's the go to support for everyone who doesn't play support. One of the supports has to be the most popular, and I would rather it be Thresh over someone like Janna.

Gorgannan3 votes

But wouldn't we rather have anyone, including annoying Nami and Lulu, before Janna?

Slamurai Jack2 votes

Thank god they finally nerfed Janna and made her a not every game pick. Anyone with such a defined niche shouldn't be such a good generalist pick too.

Ratbert10 votes

Doesn't that mean you should hate thresh even harder?

Higher pick rate Only lacks sustain(unless you grab relic shield) and huge range poke The go to support for nearly all newer players.

Gorgannan3 votes

Massive scaling on her bubble. Oh and it gives AD. Oh and she's ranged.

And has 500 MS.

Thresh invests a lot to do what he does. If he's winning, sure it's annoying, but a Thresh who is behind suicides more than Karthus.

Ratbert6 votes

Which totally invalidates my argument that thresh is just as, if not more stacked! Oh wait.

0.7 is "massive scaling" on a support, who will most likely end the game with ~100-200 ap. Meanwhile thresh has a somewhat lower scaling, but it comes with a huge range dash and shields two people (which reliably happens!). So, in terms of total damage mitigation, thresh has a 0.8 ratio + 200 more base than janna.

Janna's shield has to give ad because otherwise janna contributes nothing offensively while her closest counterpart lulu exists(whose bonus damage persists after the shield breaks) and janna essentially makes the lane 1.5v2 in terms of damage and pressure. Heck, soraka will deal more damage than janna will.

Janna has literally 25 more range than thresh + no random bonus chunking on aas, so i have no idea what this is about.

Her 500 ms is temporary, not to mention grabbing mobis gives anyone 450.

Even if thresh is behind, he can still make incredible plays with his stun, aoe knockback, 2 aoe slows and mobility for ANYONE. Janna can make defensive plays too, but can't make offensive ones behind at all.

In addtion, janna's ratios have been recently nerfed, but thresh hasn't.

DokiDokiTodoroki3 votes

It's good that Janna can't make offensive plays because she's the poster child for niche support roles, but also has the kit to basically make her adc untouchable. Granted they should probably know basic kiting/positioning and she shouldn't fuck up her skills but that goes for anyone.

Thresh's shield exists less as her shield and more for the lantern and the utility it provides. Sure it can make some pretty close plays and may provide a nice (see: tiny) shield for a 2v2 all in, but Janna's shield is leagues better. You're conveniently ignoring that Janna's basic AD is a free BF sword at max rank not even counting AP, and also shields for 270 damage plus ratios. Whereas Thresh's shields for 220 at max rank, which is not going to be until late game because you're an idiot if you max w first, and gives zero offensive stats. Janna's cooldown is 10 seconds all ranks. Thresh's cooldown goes from 22 seconds down to 16. I don't know where you get the plus 200+ base than Janna, unless you're saying that it shields two people so you count both values. In that case, it's more like total 160 in shielding for both people, which incidentally Janna matches with rank 2 of her shield.

Janna's entire identity is the disengage/peel queen. Her counterpart isn't Lulu, they fill different roles. Lulu is an aggressive poke support; Janna can spend the entire laning phase standing behind her adc and still fulfill her role completely. If a Janna and a Thresh have a random aa trade in the middle of a vacuum, Janna wins hands down. At level 3 (a point in each skill) with basic runes and masteries, Janna shields the entirety of Thresh's auto and her shield still persists. Her first aa breaks through Thresh's shield if he chooses to use lantern (which again, very few cases when you use it as a shield), and then suddenly she's left with 14 bonus AD and he's used up his damage boost. In a vacuum she wins. Also her disengage matches Thresh's cc , so it's very possible to force small aa trades without dying for your sins (Sona, anyone?). And we're not even talking about how it's a better idea for a Janna to put the shield on her ADC, who is likely running either attack speed or even more ad, and now you instantly win trades by pressing a button on an ally. Amazing, isn't it?

On to Thresh and the totally comprehensive not exaggerated list you brought up. -"Stun" which is a grab that stuns, not a point and click, which also happens to immobilize him for the entire duration. Following up with the rest of his kit involves him flying into melee range of his target and hoping that his team follows up. -Aoe knock back flay, which is a point blank line area of effect. You know what else is line area of affect knockup but can be cast from up to 1700 range? Oh right, Janna. -2 Aoe slows which are flay and ultimate. One of them is an ult, and it's impossible to deny the disengage of The Box because that slow is brutal. Flay has a one second slow. Both require Thresh to be in near melee range that he's not necessarily getting out of himself. Maybe it would be easier if he could ignore unit collision in lane, like a certain champion... -Mobility for anyone. But again, not a shield. And while it's essentially a get out of jail free card, it can also get you into some deep shit if used improperly or too early. Also 22 second cooldown. The utility is high but the price isn't cheap.

Janna's nerfed ratio was her ultimate by .3's healing. It has nothing to do with the essential components of her kit (disengage/peel), but prevented her from also being the kind of support that resets an entire team during the middle of a team fight. We don't need to be giving a free Ekko ultimate for picking a disengage support.

Janna can always play from behind because literally as long as she doesn't suck, she exists to keep her carries alive far better than Thresh can. You can say that Thresh can make more offensive plays, but chances are that if he's behind, he's going to die for it without much else getting done. Janna doesn't make offensive plays in general. She just makes her carries basically untouchable while they go full gosu. Thresh is a generalist, Janna is fully specialized and should stay that way because of the disgusting amount of power in her role. Thresh will not do Janna's job better than her, but he exists to do everyone's job all at once. He's designed as a generalist.

Just realized that maybe I went a tad overboard with the analysis and response, but I'm also sitting here with 4 tabs open- 3 wiki pages and 1 patch notes. Amazing what you can learn if you actually do your research instead of pulling stats and abilities out of nowhere or based solely on what you think you see during a game.

Voluug139 votes

Nah you were fine.

What people dont understand is that Janna's stats are meaningless. She will always have high pick/win because she is basically the counter to the most dominant support type in the last 2 years, namely engage/CC supports liek Leona/Thresh/Braum/Alistar/Nautilus.

Same happened with Morgana.

If poke supports (like Lulu or Sona) werent gutted at every chance and were in a competitive place then Janna could be much much less aggravating.

implying that Thresh isn't a generalist? LOL

He is, which was the point. Janna is not, but her secondary strengths were strong enough to make her a solid generalist pick to go along with having the best peel in the game. She was the best in the game at 1 thing and pretty solid at everything else; Thresh is merely slightly above average at everything he does.

Aheadatime5 votes

Lol @ "bc he's fun". I agree that he's fun, but that isn't why his pick rate is so incredibly high. Just being real. It's because he has more tools in his kit and can fit in with more team comps than any other support available atm.

"One of the supports has to be the most popular"

Sure, I guess. Technically, you could have the top 2 or 3 supports in the same ~1% pick rate range, but let's assume that's not the case. Why is blitz, the 2nd most popular support, 10% behind him in popularity? Wouldn't something normal look like this

1st support - 32% 2nd support - 27% 3rd support - 25% 4th support - 20% 5th support - 19%

I think the huge gap between thresh and the other supports is pretty telling, especially given that this is the same across all regions and all rank tiers. He's a generalist support, and the best one in the game. Thus, by playing him, you have a higher chance at winning than if you played any other support.

I personally would just remove the random passive on his E and fix his Q hitbox. Imo, that'd be perfect.

Troll for Trump1 votes

They basically made thresh just to sht on bltz players. On release he was blitzcrank on steroids(he did damage, could go to any lane, had more range, more overall damage etc.) Still is.

Slamurai Jack4 votes

If you don't understand why Blitz is so much better than Thresh in Solo Q, I can't help you. Just know that comparing the 2 because they both have hooks doesn't make them similar champions in any respect. Thresh and Nautilus is a far better comparison.

Madra2 votes

He's not wrong though. Blitzcrank was a terror that was in every game back when Thresh was released. Thresh's release was the one thing that curbed Blitzcrank's ungodly high pick rate, combined with the mana nerfs that meant that Blitzcrank had like two chances to grab you before he went OOM. You can't invalidate his statement by comparing it to League of Legends 2015. Nautilus support wasn't even a thing until his recent buffs. Back when he was released, you didn't see Nautilus anywhere except for jungle (and rarely, even at that.) and it certainly didn't put a damper on Blitzcrank's pick rate. Picking Nautilus jungle practically guaranteed they'd pick Blitzcrank support, too.

Madra4 votes

The other issue that some players don't remember is that if you weren't playing Blitzcrank, and you were stuck with support, you were probably playing some chick character, and some people didn't like that. Releasing a support that would feel "bad ass" was a big deal so they took this support and overloaded him with chains and souls and skulls and all the kiddies were like "Yes! This is the guy who I am inside!". And because CertainlyT and Riot would feel bad if this new bad ass support would lose to Janna or Soraka or Nami, they overloaded his kit to the Nth degree. They basically gave him everything but a heal, because heals were for girls and that's how they would justify the rest of his bloated kit.

Then they released Braum and the world was good.

Both.

LOL,his cooldowns are hilariously short actually, his e is on a stupidly short cooldown for hard cc,no other support has that short of a cooldown on hard cc,at least not in the early levels,I would absolutely love to see it increased to a proper 13 seconds, like all other abilities of the sort. His hook is on a standard cd for a hook, and his mana costs all around are low.

His aoe cc is top tier, actually stronger than that of alistar, alistar can only w->q,if enemies are grouped up,sure, that's a lot, otherwise thresh's ult+flay+q provides overall more cc. His gank safety is top tier, and is probably one of the safest supports in lane. His synergy with junglers, once again, top tier, lantern ganks are pure bullshit. His roam, top tier. His laning phase, very safe, very versatile, can deal with anything, most of his matchups are in his favor.

How exactly is this nonsense not op again?

"Because he's so fun to play!

Uhh...no. We have a meta enforced by a rabid mob. That would not and could not exist if players just picked what was fun. Every patch we see changes in playrate that coincide with nerfs and buffs. Lots of fun champs have play rates near 0%. Stop pretending fun has any major impact on ranked picks.

"Somebody will always be the most picked, so it doesn't matter!"

Technically true, but having a pick rate equal to the 16 least-picked supports combined is a problem. 16 out of 26. A single support champ sees as many games as 61% of the entire support roster combined.

And not only is he number one, he's picked for double the games of second place (Janna) and third place (Braum). Of course somebody will always be the most picked, but the gap between Thresh and everyone else is colossal.

YCitizenSnipsY3 votes

You first point is wrong, Zed, Yasou, Lee Sin, and Ekko all have moderately high pick rates and mediocre win rates. Whats the point in playing those champions especially in mass numbers if they statistically don't improve your chance to win, maybe because people enjoy them.

"Lots of fun champs have near 0% play rates..." must not be too fun of a champ if they can only get a meaningful play rate by being the strongest choice.

Vekkna1 votes

My first point isn't wrong just because it's not absolute. Fun is definitely a factor for many people, but it's probably not the most important for very many. Evelynn is my favorite champ to play, but I fucking suck with her beyond all explanation, so I play Zyra. I like Zyra less, but my win rate is nearly double, so I play Zyra.

Take Lux for example. Her kit has had zero changes to its core mechanics in season 5. She's had 1 buff and 2 QoL changes to make her easier to play. Her play rate has nearly doubled since June. "Fun" is not a factor here.

Your examples may be related to fun, but I think they're also tied to a few other things. First, each of those champs is viewed as having a toxic, frustrating, and/or overloaded kit. People hate playing against them, and I think some players like playing champs for the tilt factor.

But the most important thing about all of these champs (and others like Ahri) is that they're flashy as fuck. You can be horrible at playing them and still feel like you're a great player because you were able to hit the R button. If you want to feel like a playmaker but still suck, pick one of these guys. That said, they're aspirational champs; if you put in the time and hone your skill with them, you can control games.

Maybe all of that combined is what you call "fun." I think it's more that they have the illusion of skill without requiring much skill and turn into wrecking balls once skill is actually there. In other words, players like them for the same reason Riot likes seeing them in LCS - fast pace and high impact.

YCitizenSnipsY3 votes

I pretty clearly defined fun champions as champions that people will still play despite their poor performance in solo q. Ahri and Ekko's play rates are very close, but the gap in win rate is huge, and you said "Stop pretending fun has any major impact on ranked picks." So then tell me why are people picking Ekko just as often as Ahri.

People play certain champions to make people tilt? Well I guess since the objective of the game is to kill your opponents and destroy their nexus you could limit that too...oh i don't know... all 126 champions. Loosing is the least fun thing about this game and loosing to a Veigar isn't any different to loosing to a "flashy" champion like Zed. Its just an excuse you make up to justify your biased hatred of certain champs.

Also that "flashy" and "playmaker" circlejerk is the most played out thing on these boards. Just another one of those bias of yours to hate any champion that can consistently stay popular. If flashy was the only reason a champion was popular Azir wouldn't be trash tier and unpicked right now since he has been an LCS main pick all season.

Szunray8 votes

Who cares of 40% of people pick him? If you're in a game against a Thresh, statistically speaking, you are more likely to win that game.

Those are just the numbers. You can bring your anecdotal evidence, you can point out some streamer who agrees with you, or you can do the as these forums are known to, and list out everything in thresh's kit individually (He's got a hook, a slow, infinitely scaling armor...) and try to prove he is op.

But over a bajillion games, thresh's win rate is below 50%. Meaning that most of the time, none of that matters.

And to those of you who say high pick rate lowers win rate by too much, Look at Jinx. She has nearly as high a pick rate as thresh, and an above 50% win rate. Does that make her OP? When she FIRST came out, she had the highest pick rate and one of the highest win rates in the game at the same time.

Edit: I guess you could argue that thresh is "hard to play," which would lower his win rate... But I would disagree.

I am Madlife2 votes

Yea, I agree with you, and i'm not just saying this because I don't want thresh to be nerfed. I'm a diamond thresh main, and I have come to realize that thresh can be beat by a lot of supports, but what most people don't realize is how to do so. Here's a couple tips:

  1. If he starts hook, then harass him level 1, he wont have much damage to auto you back, plus his range is quite small compared to adc's.
  2. If he starts flay, and reaches level 2, try to stay with minions and use them to your advantage. Kite him around while he tries to find a spot to hook you, and by the time he does, he's be chunked.
  3. Once his hook is on cooldown, GO IN on him, like hard. He will only have his flay up, which yea, is still pretty strong, but you should be able to give him quite a bit of damage if he continues to play aggressive without hook.
  4. A common tip, and it says on his "counters". Thresh players like to go for souls, and they don't get punished enough for it.. so do so!
  5. Most thresh players (at higher elo) will try to predict your sidestep. Depending on how good the thresh is, or what elo, after a couple hook's you'll see how he throws them, and then try to either stand still, go a way you dont normally go, or just go in, they usually don't expect that.
  6. For champions to beat him with, you can go Blitzcrank, Janna, Braum, Alistar. All work if you know what you're doing. As well as a pretty good sona. She's a pain for me in lane xD

There's more, but if you really want a detailed list I guess just msg me, but all in all, thresh isn't that amazing and super op as people make him out to be. It's usually just players that don't get how to lane against him, and don't want to take the time to learn, which is just plain stupid if you hate him.

Yea, I agree with you, and i'm not just saying this because I don't want thresh to be nerfed. I'm a diamond thresh main, and I have come to realize that thresh can be beat by a lot of supports, but what most people don't realize is how to do so. Here's a couple tips:

Let's face it,everything can be beaten, the question is: is the matchup fair,or is it in favor of thresh? Because if it's the latter(and it generally is) then thresh should be nerfed.

  1. If he starts hook, then harass him level 1, he wont have much damage to auto you back, plus his range is quite small compared to adc's.

He generally will start with flay unless he sees kill potential.

  1. If he starts flay, and reaches level 2, try to stay with minions and use them to your advantage. Kite him around while he tries to find a spot to hook you, and by the time he does, he's be chunked.

I'm guessing you are talking about this from a ranged matchup point, here's the thing, flay+aa+follow up from both adcs and he outtrades the vast majority of ranged supports,it's the worst part about him,he doesn't need his hook to trade favorably.

  1. Once his hook is on cooldown, GO IN on him, like hard. He will only have his flay up, which yea, is still pretty strong, but you should be able to give him quite a bit of damage if he continues to play aggressive without hook.

This works for certain tanks supports, specifically naut/braum(and don't get me started on how braum is retarded sack of moronic garbage,he is only allowed to exist to offset thresh),unfortunately for ranged support...flay+empowered aas will outtrade them.

  1. A common tip, and it says on his "counters". Thresh players like to go for souls, and they don't get punished enough for it.. so do so!

Again, you need to realize this: thresh is a scary motherfucker(the same holds for all tank supports),getting near him as a ranged support is very risky, hence why janna is so good against him,she has no intention to get near him in most cases.

  1. Most thresh players (at higher elo) will try to predict your sidestep. Depending on how good the thresh is, or what elo, after a couple hook's you'll see how he throws them, and then try to either stand still, go a way you dont normally go, or just go in, they usually don't expect that.

This is the standard skillshot mind game,he can also expect you to do that and aim for that, his hook can be dodge, but you will eventually get hit.

  1. For champions to beat him with, you can go Blitzcrank, Janna, Braum, Alistar. All work if you know what you're doing. As well as a pretty good sona. She's a pain for me in lane xD

Yes,but here's the thing: all of these can be beaten by thresh as well, and for most of them, the matchup is in thresh's favor if he is good at thresh(unless it's braum, fuck braum).

As to sona, people who don't play her don't notice it,but yes,she can lane vs thresh...sort of,it's pretty even, maybe a bit in her favor...and then junglers get involved, you may think "oh look I threw lantern to jungler,me so gud",but the sona player just gets nauseated from this bullshit, her pickrate is low for a reason.

There's more, but if you really want a detailed list I guess just msg me, but all in all, thresh isn't that amazing and super op as people make him out to be. It's usually just players that don't get how to lane against him, and don't want to take the time to learn, which is just plain stupid if you hate him.

Except that he is: Pretty fucking strong in all matchups, most of them are in his favor. Excellent roam(that's how you easily beat janna). Excellent synergy with jungers(a VERY big strength). Excellent safety from ganks, due to tankiness+insane peel+lantern for carry, which is honestly critical in this meta,as bot lane gets a lot of focus.

Thresh is amazing at many things, and weak at nothing, yes,he's op. And fuck braum.

No, that was Sivir's boomerang. Thresh's hitbox for grabbing champions is either different than it is for minions, hence the magnetizing shots we always see after he misses by a mile but gets it anyway, or some champs like Sivir must have enormous hitboxes.

Based on the hundreds of examples of this happening it seems to be both. A very forgiving hitbox on the skillshot itself that prioritizes champs and teleports to them combined with large hitboxes on some champs.

It's the same hitbox for minions and champions. This is completely intended.

The thing about Thresh is I just find his kit so disgustingly overloaded..

As a Leona main, it infuriates me. Thresh can engage just as hard as Leona, with his Hook, displacement, and Box. But not only can he do that, he's ranged, and can harass very well with his buffed autos...

First off Why is he ranged?

Not only that, but on top of ALL of that, he has a shield that doubles as a free choo-choo train lane gank for his jungler, or a get out of jail free card for his ADC

Yes Thresh is squishier than Leona, but his arsenal of seemingly everything (bar a heal) well make up for it.

Leona is supposed to be the epitome of an all-in champion. Her kit is designed to literally do nothing but that. Thresh's kit can engage just as hard as she can, but at the same time, he has way, WAY more toys to play with... why?
