Please, for the love, restrict the use of new champs in ranked play for the first two weeks

awdaf··122 votes·4,154 views

Make a restriction on new champions, for at least the first two weeks after the release of them, to not be able to be taken into ranked, I am so sick of getting a new first time champion on my team that is 90% of the reason why I lose that game. Absolutely no reason should Riot allow a new champion to be taken directly into ranked play, it just doesn't make sense, how is anyone suppose to be any bit of mechanically effeicient with that champion if they never played him before? In my opinion, if you added a restriction of that sort, it would increase popularity of that champion in ranked play for the sole reason that whoever falls in love with the champion when playing normals with him, now has mechanical knowledge of the champion, and the extent of the skills he has, instead of just taking him in and winging it. Letting this happen is like telling a 13 year old to wing a presentation on calculus by just looking at one word slides to try and elaborate on that slide.

I was going to upvote this, until I saw two weeks. Like, a few days yes. Two weeks is too long.

-Goes into ranked, sees a Kled Jungle.-

"Please change from Kled." "Why? I tried him in norms, and I did well with him." "He was released TODAY. This is Ranked. Please change from Kled." "But I DID WELL WITH HIM IN NORMS."

-Bans Kled.-

"WTF GG REPORT THIS PERSON!"

well he has a viable point, no one gets good at a champ , after one game =p but yeah sums up most situations , i can relate though , when taliyah was released, some people had no idea what they were doing in ranked, and killed me a couple of times with the wall ;x

Keepe3 votes

And what was his point?

He did well with the champion in norms?

I don't give a furious flying Teemo if he did well a few games in norms. I will bloody well ban him if I see you trying to play him ON THE DAY OF RELEASE.

This same idiot, by the way, went Yi Jungle. In low Silver.

Do I REALLY need to say more?

Should I elaborate on how he offered no jungle control whatsoever?

Should I mention how "LOL WELL I AM A SMURF SO F**K YOU"?

... Yi is considered a Jungler that works best at lower ranks. Low Silver sounds like the perfect place for a Yi.

It may be the perfect place for him. If you have common sense. Running up to an enemy team with that much control, snares, knock-ups, charms, and a stun, is only going to show that if you were playing Kled you would have been just as brain dead.

A GOOD Yi could probably handle it. I would know, I've played with and against them.

Actually that sounds more like he was trolling. Because you banned him out.

There is a lot of people myself included who literally only play ranked and refuse to play other game modes or normal's as I deem it a waste of 40 minutes, people like myself would just wait 2 weeks and then play it for the first time and it would be the same experience, should just request him to be banned if you don't like it.

Blåbæret4 votes

That's okay if you have no problem screwing over your teammates by first timing a champ in ranked. Pretty selfish. You're most likely going to lose that game anyway. I'd say you're wasting 4 other people's time as well as your own when you know you' ll lose.

Nightstick242 votes

Don't know you'll lose, they're released on PBE, by the time a champion is released in live I usually have 30 games on them at least. More if they're fun.

Dr Poro5 votes

They ban new champions from LCS and worlds if they aren't out long enough because of balance issues and preventing surprise tactics that totally screw the game. The fact that they don't do this for ranked shows that they don't take ranked as serious as the players do.

RANKED IS NOT A CASUAL MODE TO HANG OUT WITH YOUR FRIENDS! That's what normals are for. Riot is trying to push everyone into the ranked, making Normals some kind of trollfest for people below casual. (Btw I prefer playing normals over ranked, but when I play ranked, I try my f*cking best)

I just hate how they're degenerating normals by making ranked the go-to casual mode.

Last I checked neither did any single pro so what's your point ??

Excuse me, I thought we were talking about competitive league of legends. The kind with million dollar prize pools.

He has a point though.

Lets make EVERY ranked game worth 1 million dollars so riot cares about us more!

Their is NOTHING that could be bad about this plan...

Gary B Enkelis1 votes

I guess I'm just saying try to lighten up about the ranked stuff. I don't even know why I made my original comment now.

Nightstick243 votes

LCS is extremely high level play, very visible and publicly broadcast across the globe. They have massive pots on the line. It's not a bronze 5 game of idiots screaming at each other until someone somehow wins.

redfeenix4 votes

That's what your bans are for.

And fuck no I've been spamming kled in ranked he's a fkn beast

falldown0101 votes

still lacks a couple spots though ? escpially vs a certain comp , that excals at cc , and stopping you

redfeenix1 votes

shh we dont talk about those

Gary B Enkelis3 votes

That's how you get good. You play. And preferable you play at your rank because that's where the challenge is.

Jbels3 votes

Smite actually does this, and for the life of me I can't figure out why Riot doesn't

DeathBot6666 votes

Because then what would the boards get to post every time a champ is released/reworked?

They would demand a revert. :D

ProfDrDeath2 votes

I'd be in favor of not totally banning new champs in ranked, but requiring mastery 3 to play them there during the first (two) week(s).

Gary B Enkelis2 votes

No way! If I want to test my ability in ranked with a new champion then I can! The point of ranked is testing my ability!

Preseason was one of the most fun times I've had in ranked because it was new and people with balls played it.

The Yetii Rider2 votes

We don't ban new champions from ranked because it disincentivizes people from buying them on release, when the IP cost is higher, to encourage more RP consumption.

It's good business sense, simple as that.

The Deckowner2 votes

Rito would never restrict people from playing new champs bevause they want those people to buy the new champ with high price and also the skin bundled with it.

that is why i ban kled everygame.

balbraaksel2 votes

I played him in an ARAM and didn't know how to play him, I assumed I would be able to read his abilities during loading screen. I was mistaken, what a load of text on the wiki page, lol. However I did manage to grasp how to play him half way through the match, losing with 10/10/21. I learned how his double dash exactly worked, how to get Skaarl back, his funny passive being sometimes really agressive dealing %max health damage, and his ult after a few uses how to use that exactly.

Not that I know him completely yet as others might can understand from what I typed here, but a decent Kled is good enough probably in Gold tier and below because nobody knows how to play against him yet either. So 2 weeks is nonsense.

I understand you don't trust others that they would do the same you do and/or fully understand his kit. I'm confident to say that if you knew someone else did the same you did and understood his kit you'd trust the person too to play that new champion on ranked.

If I'm wrong, YOU HYPOCRITE! :p

Agreed, but I think 1 week would be enough.

Nightstick241 votes

Why bother? If someone wants to take a new champ out for a ride in Ranked and they lose that's their punishment, as for the rest of you just ban the new champ.

Some of us have been mastering the new champions in PBE, shouldn't have to wait two weeks to wreck people.

Playing a new champion right away is tons of fun, if you're losing that many games that it bothers you just ban him/her/it.

Reck3rDragon1 votes

Keep in mind though, that some of the players might have played new champs on the pbe for a very long time. Asking that in champ select could be useful.

BurstYouJay1 votes

You act as if people don't have PBE accounts to try new things.

DrCyanide1 votes

Most people don't. Those that do can play another 2-weeks of normal games before taking them ranked.

That idiot feeding with the new champ is very likely to do the same with another random champion he doesn't use, tis' not I would support. Plus, Riot seems to be getting pretty good at guessing the most sucessful builds for many champions, as the recommended items often are what the highest win ratio players end up using... Chances are he/she will pick the new thing and do well or feed... Which is as likely to happen with any other champion.

Kairya1 votes

The thing is... this doesn't stop people from picking champions new to them in ranked. It doesn't actually matter how long the champ has been released, if the person has never played it.

It would make much more sense for restrictions like "player has to earn a certain amount of Mastery-points first" or reach Grade A in five games.

ABSINTHEged1 votes

Generally I'd suggest just banning new champions.

I had a bit of the opposite experience with Kled though. First day out someone played him and hard carried one of my ranked games. He's SUPER strong right now. Id actually be more worried about the enemy having him.

Dengeden1 votes

I think it'd be better for a champ to require X amount of games in norms before they can be played in ranked (shortly after release or in general, idk).

People have the disgusting tendency to ban new champions in normals, which makes X days an unreliable restriction.

Fegone1 votes

How about you either

  1. Ban the champion - problem solved
  2. Don't play for 2 weeks upon champ release, and everybody wins. You don't have to deal with people playing a new champ, and those who do, still can. Everybody wins.
CIit Yeastwood1 votes

Really wish people would stop posting this after every single champion.

It's not necessary. Some of the best practice you will get is in Ranked, where you are playing against equally matched opponents. If I play Kled in norms, I might completely destroy the silver and gold people I'm matched with. When I play Ranked in Diamond, I might get absolutely shit on playing Kled, since it's practically a different game at that point.

YOU also need experience playing WITH Kled. Banning him for two weeks doesn't help anyone. Not playing with him for two weeks doesn't help you.

Everyone just needs to shut up, let people play him if they want, and not care so much about the 20 LP you might lose or the 17 you might gain. It's really not a big fucking deal. The big deal is getting EXPERIENCE playing with and against a Kled.
