Auto-fill needs to be removed from ranked or it's reason for existing needs to be justified

Yenn··9 votes·968 views

On a 6 win streak in ranked in Gold because I've decayed from Diamond, and then suddenly auto-fill strikes.

Both my top and jungle get auto-filled. Both cannot play their roles, choose bad champions for the composition, and just feed all game. The enemy had such a huge gold advantage from them that I couldn't do anything to counter them.

This needs to be removed. This 'feature' single handedly loses games in ranked, and I'm not sure who thinks that's okay.

Someone fucked up by allowing this to stay in the game this long. Please disable it or explain why it's enabled in ranked and what value it's bringing, because I'm really not seeing it.

EDIT: I've just had three consecutive games with a minimum of TWO auto-filled players, my third having THREE auto-filled players. One of them left mid-game because they didn't feel like playing support. I just lost 70 LP to this and that's not okay.

EDIT: Four games in a row; jungle, ADC, and support all auto-filled. I cannot get back to Diamond because of this system; these games are essentially 3v5 or 2v5.

EDIT: I'm now at five games in a row, all losses due to auto-filled players not being able to function in their role.

Wait 4 minutes in queue . Autofilled twitch main goes mid orianna . Goes 0-11 15 minutes in and the game is over

4 min queue 15 minute game

Yea I think shorter queue times makes the game more fun :)

Except you're 100% wrong. If that's actually a problem (which it's not), make an option to allow people to opt out of being auto-filled in exchange for shorter queue times.

They tried that last season. Very few people opted in to 'fill' and queue times went crazy. Those that still picked 'fill' were filled into Support as often as possible, making 'fill' even less desirable. The number of people willing to 'fill' dropped. Queue times got even worse, match quality dropped a lot.

Riot tried it even though it was stupid to expect it to work. It didn't work. We went back to the system that worked for 5 seasons where people have to sometimes take turns like they learned how to do in kindergarten. Get over it.

That's not how fill worked, and you could only select one role, not two. That was a completely different system.

You clearly have absolutely no idea what you're talking about and likely don't even play ranked, invalidating your entire post.

Sirrkas3 votes

That is how fill worked. If you choose the "fill" option, you did not need to choose another one. You could choose mid/fill or just fill. In both cases, you were most likely the support in the next match. Same for mid/sup. Because people didn't want to play in 90 % of their games support, if they choose XY and second fill or sup, they switched to mid/top for example, to get more often their primary role.

The only time you could only select one role, was in the teambuilder queue, but there you also picked a champion and were stuck to it. Choosing Sona for support and got into a team with 4 ad-squishies, you couldn't switch to a tank, because you had to play Sona now.

i wanted the autofill to be adresed since january xD the only thing i get is hate. and my point that the games under diamond start for 3 mins average and autofill is absolutely useless . above diamond the wait time is much longer i suppose cant say for sure cuz im gold but whatever. the real deal is that riot "wanted the wait time for a game to be as low as possible" even if it costs ppl's LP when someone gets auto filled at supp and trolls because didnt get swapped. i prefer a better quallity of gameplay over decreased wait time by about 1 minute under diamond. and i get downvoted by saying this like im completely wrong or something. :/

Enjutsu1 votes

So you think because you have to wait that specific time for a game it means autofill is useless? you don't assume if it was removed things would get worse?

also:

and it has to let choose whether or not u want to get autofilled

we had this option since start it's called picking fill, but not enough people use it.

Either idiots who cant even think of reasons not to remove autofill except for queue time, or high mmr players who already have to go through long queue times as is.

Autofill is worse then that master yi/tahm and zilean/anivia duo, it will win you some games, it will lose you some games, but it effects everyone in multiple games at multiple elos.

imagine the highest mmr on your team be a jungle or top laner main but autofilled as a support....will it be their fault for not being able to carry when every other lane fails?

Also imma drop a few likes here there and everywhere to counter them....lol Everyone like the thread , we will get through this <3

i really dont get it the autofill causes problems to literally anyone, there is no player that can tell they didnt experience "oh shit i got autofilled support swap me or ill troll" phrase and still there are ppl disliking the idea of changing one unhealthy system.

It decreases queue times. Another thing that people don't realise about long Qs means that the longer you have the more it has to stretch its "search range", meaning worse mathcmaking.

Worse matchmaking is slightly preferable to players being put into roles they literally do not know how to play. This isn't a remotely good reason.

People were too greedy, they wanted all: good matchmaking, to pick a role they want and low Queues, if at least one isnt met someone makes a thread.

Your playing first and for all...to have fun! In my opinion, and as I think, In general, If you play with a role/champion you don't like, your having no fun, thus removing the core and foremost important thing you can have while playing this game.
And here comes the question, before you ask "So why you play this game" you should ask "why Riot make such lame and out of the question decisions???????" and the answer is Now its the time for a Rioter to step in and answer wtf their doing

Enjutsu2 votes

"why Riot make such lame and out of the question decisions???????"

Because Riot had to respond to the feedback. And im gonna add this: there's still less shitstorm regarding autofill than what we had because of bad mathcmaking and long Qs.

Riot has to choose one that gives less bad feedback.

That's what I dislikes, It doesn't matter what feedback they get, you don't eliminate threat by making an unhealthy substance. that's just wrong

I'm suggesting to do the right thing. If a humongous group of people are protesting to burn down a city because they have problems with it, doesn't mean it should go through like that, as burning a city is out of the question as with forcing you to play what you dislikes concerning the gaming industry

Enjutsu1 votes

What you're suggesting is rather ambiguous and your example is way too extreme.

Let's stick with something more direct.

Riot has an issue: Because of new champion select they have too long Qs, which also worsens matchmaking.

Riot went with autofill and tackling the source issue.

What would be your solution then?

That is a good question, there are several approaches, but I will go with one of them for now

A pop-up message: You choose your two preferred roles and hitting "play". When the system finds fewer selection in a specific role, the client pops-up a screen which asks all those searching If they want to play one of those required roles, the screen stays until you accept/decline or after 20 seconds of a countdown have passed.

Why this is healthier? its simple, most times someone will choose that role, as he knows he can play it, and If he will decline, there is a chance that it will take longer then usual to get into a game, so why the hell not

But, of course Riot will not even think about it, because making an AI that can actually do that job, costs money. Money they have and can afford to spend, but still a money wasted on something else then whatever they think is more important.

Enjutsu1 votes

Umm, i don't really see much of a difference between the current system and yours. It looks like you're doing exaclty the same only in a slightly different form.

You get to choose before the game even starts, that's a big difference there.

It is even better that its almost the same, as in my suggested way, people get to choose If their going to play in a role they do not desire, as I said your not forcing anyone with it while still having a productive way of reducing Queue times

Enjutsu1 votes

Yes, but now you can enter the game and dodge if you don't like it. Still the same, still see the role, it's more like you just removed the the consequences of a dodge.

MujinTengu1 votes

Its not the same, as you cannot know which person can play what roles while your inside the game and no one (most times) will agree to play a role you where the chosen (this time) to fill-in. But, on the other hand, while outside and while that pop-up asks you nicely If you can play that or this role instead (which it is being sent to all those searching in that time of need) makes most people to consider and to be "on their good side" this time as If they wont, they know very well that it will take more time then usual to start a game properly. The bottom line is, everyone will play champions and roles they at least know how to play.

Enjutsu1 votes

Im gonna be honest here. My question was practically a rethorical one, because the core issue is lack of supports, nothing you suggested adressed that or can adress it.

Your suggestion would be worth considering for the sake of improving the existing system if it worked perfectly( i mean if the current system worked perfectly as in we already had enough supports) and auto-fill wasnt necessary anymore.

Nothing can work perfectly, not for a long time anyway...Supports are needed, I get that, but I don't get how you came to the conclusion that autofill is better then what I purposed.

Enjutsu1 votes

From the way i see it, it's a more sophisticated fill option, which we already have, but it's never been enough. Even your option would become autofill too.

The lack of supports isnt really something you can adress by making changes to champion select. Riot has to make support role more appealing and get more supports, which they have been attempting over the course of this season.

Sirrkas1 votes

Something like that was in the teambuilder queue. Usually that ment for me as mainsupport, I enter a team and the first thing I read is "pls wait, we will start soon. XY is away for a few minutes" or "finally, after 20 minutes a support".

Except queue times in ranked were never a problem, and there's no justification for favoring faster games with bad match ups in the competitive game mode.

Do you need me to highlight keywords in my sentences to help you follow along?

Except queue times in ranked were never a problem,

These posts are by unranked players, not about ranked, and long to them is 3 to 5 minutes. I used to wait 15+ at Diamond. 3-5 is nothing, and my current queue averages about 4 minutes in Gold I.

Find someone who exclusively plays ranked who would prefer a game that is guaranteed to be a loss over a long queue. This isn't a valid argument, because you won't find anybody.

I played since Season 2, thus making me one of those who knows what was going with role selection, and believe me, I like autofill more so then what was then.

But, it does not make it good, its just better then before, It was always bad, and while champions stacks up, the game becomes harder and harder to balance, making you not just to pick a role you don't like, but a also champion you don't like as well. I must admit, Riot doing a very decent job, their working hard on all prospects in and outside their game, but they lack knowledge and creativity when it comes to several things like balancing, reworking, and managing core game tactics (like not forcing someone to eat yogurt as he can puke after it slides down his throat ('autofill reference'))

Vanic9981 votes

The problem isn't with auto fill. It's with the players. Autofill has been around since the beginning of the season and for some reason, most players still haven't learned anything more than their two preferred roles.

I don't know if you remember but before dynamic q, season 5 and prior, you weren't guaranteed your two preferred roles. Your role depended on the pick order so players had to learn all 5 roles to be safe. What players should be doing is learning a third or fourth role just like the days before dynamic q. One of which should be support since auto fill mostly gives support.

Except that doesn't work, because you get your desired role 90% of the time, so you fall out of practice with any third or fourth roles.

Which is why 'lol you had to play everything in the past, git gud' is an invalid argument.

Vanic9981 votes

You can't really fall out of practice. You don't neeed to make support or any other role that isn't your preferred role your best role. Just good enough that you don't feed enough to lose the game like what the original post is implying about auto filled players. Me for example, Top isn't in my two preferred roles but at least I know how to play top well enough to not feed.

I mentioned the past to prove that players are capable of learning a 3rd and 4th role.

Try playing a 3rd or 4th role that you play in 1/20 games at Diamond. It doesn't fly.
