Poor Soraka ...

After the recent patch (5.24), Soraka got a pretty big nerf. While it didn't destroy her nor made her join the Cassiopeia Urgot Yorick bench, it's still something that troubles me.

Played a recent match with her, and I do main Soraka. Problem is, no longer can I keep my team alive in team fights. Before the patch, I was able to tank certain doom and keep the party alive long enough to come out victorious, but now thanks to my ultimate not removing Grievous Wounds along with my W having more mana cost per cast ... it feels like my character gets drained too quickly (because 60 mana per cast is quite costly overtime especially during mid game) to stay useful in combat.

Perhaps this is a sign I need to make a different build with her, or just need to play safer. I can't go the frontlines with her anymore. Heck I might to be tankier with my build because Riot shortened the range of her starcall which is risking my character's safety.

How do you guys feel about Soraka now? Is there a proper way to build her, to make up for the nerfs? I would hate to abandon Soraka because she is my main support character, and would bring joy to people in harsh match ups. Feels like Soraka is going to suffer late game because of these three nerfs inflicting her early game, at least in my opinion.

Soraka is still pretty much 100% pick/ban in Diamond from what I have observed.

Will need more time to tell for certain, but my prediction is that this has changed nothing.... she will still be, at least viable. Would that Lee/Thresh/Yasuo get three nerfs the way Soraka did...

I'm sure Soraka is perhaps still something to cherish, especially if built accordingly to this patch but my current build is probably what's wrong because of the changes made. I looked into MobaFire, Lolking and other websites to see what's up but they have little to say on how to make Soraka work (as for now) so maybe a few days, i'll see a good guide pop up, hopefully. Runes for more hp reg / mana reg might suffice as well.

I have been running hp regen and mana regen for a long time before switching to cdr glyphs and I can't say I miss the cdr glyphs. Sure it's a little harder earlier and we need to cleverly use our Q and E now due to a tighter mana budget, but this also means that we can enjoy itemizing for mana. Before it was so easy to not go oom that you had to spam everything nearly on CD. Of course, I don't mean building extensively for mana regen, but just the support staples such as zekes, talisman, and ardent censer. The main thing to get used to now is using Q and E properly while reserving a mana pool for W heal trains. :D

cant agree that it has "changed nothing"

theres no way she will be 100% as viable as she was.

Still the reason they hit her so hard is the fact that in higher elo shes must ban, and in lower elos shes freelo that doesnt get banned.

I believe the point was to keep her viable, but not a free win of a champion since she negates substantial levels of damage in team fights.

You're now required to put yourself in danger in order to keep sustaining yourself, and thus the whole team as well.

Previously Soraka could sit way out of the fight, and thus never able to be removed from the fight unless some godly flank was accomplished. Grievous wounds now only affects self heals in general anyway, so all it does is make it so you wouldn't heal yourself as much, and removing grievous wounds from allied targets as well simply returned their ability to heal themselves, which is what the patch notes meant by adding insult to injury, especially with champions like mundo being common place.

Funny, I was able to sit back and heal away as you described. Problem is, Soraka taking such risks is very hurtful overall.

Unless I make Soraka quite tankier than usual, and if my team has to keep watch of me being flanked- going in to heal is straight up suicide if I get caught once. Soraka is naturally squishy, and I enjoyed her having the kit to stay out of trouble while providing support for her team. Having to go closer up (because Q has shorter range now) and needing to be closer to the front lines is going to get her killed more often than not. She doesn't even have a spell to escape properly, unless enemies stay in her E spell long enough to get that stun which is also unlikely.

Perhaps again this reflects on my current build not cutting out. I'll have to see what people do to cope with the situation when using Soraka.

What do you typically build? You could look into a slightly more resistance heavy build, if you're overly squishy most of the time. I personally permaban Soraka, and probably will continue to do so because I actually dislike the champion in my games as nobody at my elo seems to understand how to deal with the champion.

Honestly the way to deal with Soraka, was to let their lane push to you, and have your jungler come down and gank the lane to put you ahead and able to kill the lane early, so Soraka was irrelevant, and you dealt more damage than she could deal with. To be honest, you don't even have to kill her first so much as scare her out of the fight and/or cc her out of healing a carry long enough for you to take them down. I think my favorite method was Tahm Kench, eating Soraka then killing the carry.

IMO, the size of her heal (especially with Windspeaker's) is the biggest problem. I get that they're trying to allow her to keep that as her identiy, and also not wanting to over-nerf her alongside the changes to Windspeaker's. But the flat value of the heal is just too much for pretty much any lane to work through. The Grievous Wounds change is basically a superficial nerf, though. Grievous Wounds itself only reduces self-heal, so it's not like it hurts Raka's heal output to allies.

If they truly wanted to nerf Soraka appropriately:

  1. Decrease the range of her W (so she's closer to who she heals, increased risk)
  2. Increase the health cost of her W (everyone complains about her heals, but no other healer uses 10% of their health to heal)
  3. Decrease the heal amount to offset Windspeaker's (Windspeaker's is what set her over the edge, imo)

I agree with you on everything except the health cost.

If you're being attacked, and having to heal constantly at the same time- it's going to get you killed real fast. I'd advise if they did make Soraka have to sacrifice more hp, she would regain 2.5% back after five seconds per cast or something to balance the amount she loses. Perhaps a bad idea, but Soraka needs to keep sustain since she's already squishy as it is.

I wasn't thinking anything crazy, maybe like 12% instead of 10%.

What really irritates me about these Soraka nerfs is that they were straight nerfs. No compensation anywhere.

I think she's balanced now, but everyone's banning her. Sucks. I main her too item 3070 Meanwhile Nautilus rules bot lane and nobody seems to care.

naut has been freelo botlane since 150k mastery points ago. That is unless youre laning against soraka.

Dominick Destine2 votes

Naut is viable sure... but not the freelo you are presenting him as.

He is below the dominant supports (Thresh, Alistar, Leona, Soraka, Blitz, etc.)

Drackolus1 votes

Huh, last I looked he was a distant first. I musta put something in wrong. Nevermind, I'm an idiot. I still want to play raka tho =[

I'm sorry but... I have zero sorrow feelings for the Ctrl+Z champion of league.

Soraka "Oh we just traded?... NO WE DIDN'T... oh look, you have no HP left!"

Soraka's ultimate no longer affects grievous wounds, true, but neither do they affect your heals on your allies. I don't play too much Soraka, but Grail seems like a reasonable item, as does blue support item.
