I still don't really understand why you don't directly get the Rift Herald buff

It doesn't make sense to me that the person who kills Rift Herald doesn't get the buff. Sure, the way it is now makes it easier to give your laner the buff, but why not just let them kill it like blue/red buff? Now there's really no point to try and steal Herald, since you have to face a 2v1 in order to get the buff. Yeah, it stops the enemy team from getting it, but that just evens out the game again, and you both just wasted time trying to get it. I think it was fine when the killer got the buff. Just my opinion on it :D

"Just letting your teammate get the buff" sounds like an ideal solution till you actually put it into practice with a tank laner who does crap for damage early game and a bruiser jungle who's actually the one killilng it.

Exactly, and this forces you to tank 3 or 4 more hits than needed, and since the Herald hit like a truck, well, you just wouldn't do it...

If you are the jungler and you want to pass off the buff to your laner but their jungler is nearby, it becomes a 50-50 smite. As a jungler you want to win the smite to secure the objective but if it just you the buff then it would help your laner out at all. That's why.
