Why is Gnar resourceless?

Champions that need to spam abilities to function well are the only champions that should be resourceless. Gnar doesn't need to spam abilities at all to do well. All he has to do is build mallet and cleaver and auto attack the enemy champion a few times. This only thing he spams is his free speedboost and auto attacks so why should he be resourceless too? You could make the argument that he spams his ranged Q but a lot of other champions have spammable abilities (Fiora's Q for example) and they use mana. You could also argue that he has 8 abilities but so do Jayce, Elise, and Nidalee and they use mana. This is just really bad design and makes it that much harder to punish Gnar in lane.

He is resourceless mainly because his entire thematic centers around the idea of rage.

Ok let him be manaless in the mega form. He should at least be mana gated in the mini form. Which isn't asking to much since every champion that has two forms has mana on the ranged form.

Ok. So shorten his cooldown and watch him spam more late game.

Gnar in mini form basically has two abilities. He can't use his ult and his W is a passive, even if you make him use mana in mini, let's be real, he's gonna take a long time to get through that.

Further, him not using mana is actually a benefit from the fact that it limits his build path slightly. You won't see any Sheen items on him (which honestly I feel like Gnar with Tri-Force could do some work in a world where Gnar uses mana).

Need I mention that there is a huge trade off where Gnar has a whole different thing to micromanage when preparing for team fights. If he pops his Gnar-bar early, he won't be mega for the fight (which isn't good) and if he hadn't been stacking it, he won't be mega until after the fight is either win or lost already (meaning his mega didn't impact the fight). There's trade offs for him not using mana.

He is gaining Rage to transform into his Mega into the first place though.

Gnar is a bad example to use here because he uses a different resource in his rage. Champions like Gnar, Rengar, and Renekton don't have mana (and have balancing done with that fact in mind) because they have a separate resource they generate through combat to improve/change their abilities. This is as opposed to champion like Garen, Katarina, and Riven, who do not have a unique resource and are also manaless and make up the second type of manaless champions.

tl;dr: Gnar does have a resource, he's simply manaless, and there is a difference there.

Vladimir Aatrox DrMundo Mordekaiser Zac have HP cost for their abilties. i wouldnt call them resource-less. only champs that are completely resource-less would be Garen Katarina Riven

Fair, I forgot about Vlad's health costs because I don't play him, my bad. The general point still stands though.

he has a resource

Because otherwise his kit is complete trash. Same as pretty much any manaless champion.

His lack of a traditional resource has nothing really to do with the issues you're bringing up here.

NOBODY should be resourceless because resourcelessness counters Mana way too hard in early game. If I have to hold back on my skills while my opponent gets to sling damage at me with abandon, how the fuck is that fair or fun to deal with?

Riot decided when they made Gnar that he already had very little control over his abilities, so they weren't going to gate him further by giving him mana.

Having both Rage and Mana would probably be really cluttering though, to be honest. And the point is he's building Rage to transform into his Mega form, which good Gnar players learn how to manage and control down the timing so they can use it when they want instead of just whenever randomly.
