How strong is Ornn right now? Does he have decent counters?

I have laned several times against Ornn these past few weeks, and I noticed after the buffs he had he seems to win every trade thanks to his W. I honestly kinda felt bullshitted every time I faced him because the times I happened to kill him I knew he did absolute crap like trying to all in me from half health while I'm playing an all in 1v1 champion like Jax. Feels weird to be honest. I wouldn't classify him as broken overpowered, but I fail to see his weaknesses. With his CC (+CC amplification), his ult which is insane in teamfights, and his sheer damage and tankiness, without forgetting his masterworks, he seems like outright a better pick than others. He can be beaten if he fucks up, but he just seems like.. a better version than others. As I main melee champions (Jax, Nasus mostly) I have a really hard time trading him. Obviously Nasus outscales him in a 1v1 though you kinda need a lot of stacks/def stats compared to other matchups, Jax however I found the lane pretty harsh if he doesn't stupidly stand in place after his W for you to free auto him (obviously). In any case, if he has the same level as me he automatically 'wins' the laning (in CS at least) no matter my pick. I don't play ranged bullies though, so I don't know how he fairs against the likes of Jayce/Gnar/Kennen/Vlad/Quinn etc.

Any insight on the matchup from those who play with/against him a lot?

Wasn't Ornn buffed? That might be why you're having trouble. I've noticed he's a lot stronger this preseason as well. Just like Maokai, if I'm playing anything other than Trundle I find him very difficult to deal with. In my opinion, these high utility picks shouldn't be able to out-trade bruisers/fighters at all, since they get better late games by default.

Also, I wouldn't pick Quinn into something like Ornn. She falls off a cliff as the game goes on, while he scales well into late game just by being Ornn. Gnar would probably work, as he has decent utility along with %hp damage to help kill him all game.

I don’t play gnar, but I think a well played gnar could deal with him

I noticed too

I play A LOT of top lane (mordekaiser, singed, sion main)

And you are not alone- lol Ive been feeling this but not many talk about it.

Here’s my experience against ornn with my favorites:

Sion’s shield and trading is inferior, with only corrupting pot for sustain.

Singed can not trade with him well at all but is decent at running in and out for mini trades and dodging skills. Overall, also inferior.

Mordekaiser is my main and my litmus test for a champs trading ability. Even with a fat W heal and shielding with E, morde gets out traded over time, even if you can Q ornn in the trades. I’m biased, but this should NOT happen since morde has huge weaknesses to balance his trading and lane pressure. Ornn generally causes a stalemate or wins this lane also from attrition.

TL;DR

IMO ornn trades a little too well given his other strengths. He can also trade often with his serviceable cool downs and modest mana costs (and ability to buy a sapphire crystal in lane after starting Corr Pots). He can trade over and over and come out on top.

HOW I DEAL WITH HIM:

I lose lane to him, but I don’t lose game to him. He makes himself gankable once he pushes a wave during trades with his flame breath, and he isn’t exactly a turret shredder, even with sheen and Demolish.

That being said, I think either slightly lower base damages or higher mana costs would make him more “fair” to trade with, considering he’s a little too good at trading with his other strengths.
