He's talking about normals.

Qiyeanu Reeves5 votes

even in normals it shouldnt be that mixed if he's b5 and solo -- should try and balance out the MMR

not everyone wants to play ranked all the time so i just don't think if you queue as a solo you should be like bronze 5 with golds lol thats just not fun for anyone

Leetri2 votes

Normals have a completely separate MMR system from the ranked queues. Say you're of Bronze skill when you hit lv 30 and you immediately start playing exclusively ranked games for years. You get so good at the game you climb to Diamond, but you decide to play some normals again because you wanna try the new champion. You're gonna get matched against Bronze players because you still have Bronze normal MMR, it doesn't care that you're Diamond in Ranked. Then one of those players look the teams up on one of those websites and post a whine thread on the boards because they got a player who had Diamond rank despite everyone else being Bronze.

Mysticman8914 votes

it's a bit misleading when you're bronze 5 in flex, but not necessarily referring to flex queue matchmaking.

Although I don't see any gold players in any of your games for that matter, but seeing gold solo queue players in bronze flex or normals is much more plausible if their flex/nnormals mmr is suitably low.

You can check my match history and look over my games if you really want to get into it, but being matched perpetually against higher skilled opponents doesn't make for probable victories.

The matchmaking system ensures both sides have a 50-50 chance of winning! Doesn't that make you feel better?!

Squey12 votes

Thats the worst part of matchmaking. Riot keeps bringing it up like its a good thing but in reality its the worst thing possible for everyone involved.

Even with winstreaks it makes it worse since then for example a high silver player can be matched with low plat which makes it unfair and makes no sense with the matchmaking fairness, tbh the game will die cos of these things they make just so shit

Yeah that never is really the case if one team has 4 golds and a silver vs a team of 2 plats, 2 golds and 1 silver also matching high plats in a low gold game very fair and 50-50 definitely you got that right spot on. Its more like 30-70 winning just a coinflip

because it's all relative

in fact, Bronze 5 now is a lot better than Bronze 5 a few years ago since the playerbase improved overall

this actually makes it harder for newer players

To back this up, RedMercy did a video a while ago placing into Bronze to show how to solo carry and noticed bronze players were lacking in execution but had much stronger game knowledge and decision making than expected. What was lacking was the coordination and reading/adjusting accordingly.

Since this is an older game with a large player base, people got better over the years. Ranking isn't absolute after all. It's relative. Even if we were all Diamond level skill magically right now by a snap of my fingers, there would still be all these tiers. The difference is that you'd need to be significantly better than current Diamond level to not be placed in the middle of the pack. However, rank is absolutely highly correlated with game knowledge, execution, strategy etc. I see very clear differences when smurfing in Silver compared to high Gold... even basic things like having people watch the J more early or enemy junglers correctly invading me if I'm playing a weaker junler/gankig on the other side of the map. There are innumerable nuances that high gold players understand which those in Silver as a whole don't seem to. Some Silver players know one nuance while another a different one etc. but it isn't common knowledge as much and fewer are known at the same time. I totally agree that the difference between the tiers isn't as dramatic as a few years ago since the skill of the player base increased as a whole but it's still absolutely there. The mistakes are just a bit less obvious. It's kind of how in chess if you play with a beginner they just drop pieces a lot and it's really obvious. On the other hand, a Class A player vs a Master won't drop pieces randomly and yet will still be absolutely crushed in the vast majority of games. It'll be subtle positional mistakes adding up to an eventual late game disadvantage or harder to spot tactics etc. The difference is still enormous as indicated by the rating performance but to someone without the Master players' knowledge, it isn't so clear why.

BTW: Would love your thoughts on Nocturne with LT. I replied to you in another thread. It's something I've been experimenting with a bit myself.

LOL, buddy, you're silver 4, never been in gold, trash. please don't talk shit if you're hard stuck low elo omega gold isn't low to at all if you make it to gold feel accomplished honestly

If you can land in gold in your first time placement matches on a new account, IT IS LOW ELO. It's literally not hard at all it takes luck to land there, I just don't care to make a smurf just for that. Judging by your op.gg you only had to win a couple matches to get into gold, if that, meaning you placed there, if I hadn't placed all the way into bronze5 I'd be past you, but I gave up on the shit and hardly play ranked now. If I make it to gold by climbing from my current rank, I'll feel accomplished because it's pretty fucking hard dealing with all of these trolls that are already in elo hell and don't give a fuck to advance

It literally doesn't matter what rank I am, I have over 4k hours played here, I can speak upon this system as I've seen and heard more of it than 85% of players. I am truly a league vet you should respect that, my rank doesn't mean anything once it comes to the knowledge i have for this very simple game and also I wasn't even talking shit, just stating facts, cya buddy.

Oh boy you must be special

you can land in plat 4 if you win all of you placements first time. Plat is not low elo idgaf what you say once again you're hard stuck silver 4 if Gold is low elo try to get to it buddy if you have 4k hours on league and silver that's fucking sad I have 1500 hours accumulated on 5 accounts I've been playing for 2 years went from b5 to g5 4k hours 4 years or no life and still silver 4 sad as fuck my mans

You can sit here and insult me all you want but it's not making you any more right than you think you are. The only reason you're gold is because you made that smurf intentionally to avoid your previous account's MMR. Basically all of my hours are played on my main, if I felt like losing out on all champions owned I'd go make some smurfs to avoid my elo just like the rest with common sense do. Obviously you're just a stubborn and senseless kid that isn't going to listen to a single thing a wiser person tells you, so once again, cya buddy.

Ok so my advice, leave poppy where you found her. Your kda on her is under 2, and your winrate is 13%... Secondly looking at your profile you are playing about 20 different champions. How are you meant to know a champion properly when you play something new every game. One of the most important things you can learn in lol is how to maximize your impact when ahead and minimizing your feeding while behind. This means doing ok into champions who counter you while doing well into those you counter. You can't do this unless you know how your champion does into their match up, their powerspikes and how to itemize correctly.

If you want to see someone who does this well watch the proffessor akali video I've linked. NO DON'T PLAY AKALI, just watch the video. Akali mid is painful in high elo until 6, and can die so easily he plays her so safely and doesn't die. This is minimizing.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qW4fZaIe5X8

Then watch the Diana video I've posted. Diana has a massive advantage over her opponent and bully's them under tower, while roaming to impact the rest of the map. Yes his teammates join in helping but that's high elo for you. The point is he takes advantage of enemy mistakes and punishes them for it without going too ham. I'm a malz main, and i ALWAYS hate this matchup, but diana is always my go to if my opponent picks malz.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wbXF_5SfvlQ

The key in both of these is that these players have a very select champion pool, and learn every match up. They respect when they are at a disadvantage and take advantage when they know they can. Another example of this is Yamikaze. Talon 1 trick. Check out him too. Find a champion you enjoy and learn them properly. Watch people who know how to play them (preferably with commentary) and try to take note of when they back off and when they go in. It's all important. Then when you're consistent on that one, learn another while maintaining your knowledge of the first. etc etc etc.

Hope this helps :)

Alright, but I can't play a single champion in every role can I? When it gives me jungle I have to have a jungler, same with bot, support, top, and mid; none of which positions I've found anything resembling success.

You only need to learn 3 positions tbh. The one you want to main, a secondary you're not bad at, and support in case you get auto-filled (unless you choose support as one of the other two).

Learn a champion for each of those and then you'll find it's much easier.

Last season I had Malzahar mid/support, Diana jg/mid, and zyra support. That way I was covered and only had 3 champs to learn.

IainG102 votes

Reasonably true, but the last few times I've listed all fill it has given me jungle, so I'd make sure you can play that too for autofill reasons

This so so much. Literally 80% of the reason I got out of Bronze for the first time, 2 years ago. This cannot be stressed enough. Now I wish I could figure out what I need to do to get out of Silver. That's the true elo hell lmao.

I'm busy working my way out of silver at the moment (though have had little time for ranked recently as I've had to work out some kinks with Malzahar) and the answer I've found success with is making sure I have a champion pool that synergises with my teammates. For example I learnt Galio mid so that when I have someone like Kai'sa, Nocturne or Camille with a great engage, I can follow up. If we had some nice tanky frontline/enagge but needed someone to deal with those damned back line carries I learnt Kassadin. Even with assassins, Diana tends to be a good counter to them and can easily steamroll a game if played right. Malzahar is always my preference, but it doesn't do well against every team comp/matchup (no one really does) so it's good to have a SLIGHTLY larger champion pool to work with. Anywho, I'm still silver, but this seems to be working for me so far this season xD

Looked at your last 4 ranked solos, there was 1 silver, multiple unranked, and the majority of players were bronze. If you're bronze V w/ 30% w/r you deserve it. Its not who you're being matched against.

Morticianjohn3 votes

He clearly is ok with being bronze 5 knowing that is his skill level. What he doesn't want is to have to lane against a silver 2 player and go 2/10/7 every game. At some point he should face equally bad players.

He IS facing equally bad players. Rank isn't an exact representation of skill. Look at his history, the vast majority of the players he is facing are in his mmr.

If you're in bronze you honestly need to start watching someone else play league my dude.

I get the downvotes, but this is still good advice. There are so many nuances in this game and so many strategies to counter or play around them with that watching and copying a person who greatly understands the strategies will strongly improve the viewer's skill. Also, I don't mean to be offensive, but chances are that a Bronze V player has a lot of room for improvement.

I guess this doesn't fix OP's matchmaking issue, but it can make life easier.

yyyeessss, this is a good way to improve.

it's still not what he's actually complaining about, he's complaining that the matchmaking itself should be as fair as possible.

"git gud" is actually not a valid response to "the game is matching me up against opponents that i have no chance of beating at my current skill level"

Azurify1 votes

My response is not "git gud" my response was that he himself needs to improve and that he is going to have to play against people in elos he doesn't want to. I play in plat and have to deal with diamond and gold, do you really think I want to? No.

The way he started this off was to talk about his winrate then went to talking about matchmaking which is already fair. The reason he's getting gold and silver players is because their MMR has degraded to bronze.

I'm simply offering a solution for him so that instead of being in bronze and dealing with gold and silver. He's in silver dealing with gold and silver.

He actually has a VERY high chance of beating the people that he is facing if he is getting put against them but as it stands he is not actually worried about improving over actually complaining about being paired against people he could be getting better than.

sKz Aaron D4 votes

In flex queue at least, you're being matched against people that are gold in solo queue because the MMR system is a little unfair to lower skilled players. It counts the lowest ranked player on the ladder the same as the rank 1 challenger because solo queue MMR is completely unused in flex.

In normals, it's because it uses a far less restrictive set of matchmaking parameters. I'm gold 1, and I've had so many games against diamonds, masters, challengers, and even former LCS players. It's unreal. Maybe 20% of my normal games have someone that much higher than me. You get over the novelty of it pretty quickly after losing 3 games in a row to someone 8 ranks higher than you while you're trying something new in the "casual" queue.

I made a post about this recently, and even specifically mentioned that it can't possibly be fun for the silver and bronze players that I also regularly get matched with/against. Looks like I was right.
