Explain Taliyah to me?

I've been a jungler for a long time, and this coming season I'm making the transition to mid lane just for a change of pace. I've found that my map awareness is pretty good from being a jungler, so I decided to try champions like Talon, Galio, Taliyah that can quickly roam to side lanes and help the map get ahead.

I've excelled at galio so far, he's the closest to my current jungle champion pool, which is mostly big CC initiation tanks like amumu, jarvan, sejuani, etc.

But Taliyah is a different story.

My CS is fine. My roams are fine, usually help get kills when I roam - but I myself have a REALLY hard time getting any kills on her. I frequently end up with score lines like 4/4/19 or something similar.

I just don't understand where her damage is supposed to come from. I hit my Qs. I hit my E+W combo. I thread auto attacks into my rotations. I do everything I'm pretty sure I'm supposed to do, and her damage output is just unimpressive.

Is she meant to be more of a supporty style mid laner? Was I mistaken in thinking she was a high sustain damage output champion? How do YOU play Taliyah? What are your skill rotations? What sort of neat tricks do you use? How do you kill people?

What am I doing wrong?

Her damage is quite unimpressive for a Midlaner. She relies on chip damage from Q and unaware enemies to fall for her E W shenanigans.

It's okay if you don't get any kills with Taliyah. Unless you're really ahead of the enemy, kills wont matter much in terms of buying more items to boost your damage. Main reason for this is because both E and Q have falloff damage, which means they progressively become ineffective against MR and large HP pools. Due to this, her R is the most surefire way to make an impact in a teamfight. Block off an entire portion of the map to force blinks and dashes out of the enemy. If you're successful in doing that, then it makes your team's life a lot easier.

My favourite items on her are item 3030, item 3165, item 3151, item 3116, and item 3009. Very disruption-based with a lesser focus on raw AP. That's how I build her anyways. I don't engage very often and leave it to my team to start a fight then I decide how to approach. I usually use Rock Surfing to approach from the side away from the enemy to set up my R.

She's a control mage, so she wouldn't typically get kills, unfortunately.

The best you can do is lay down DPS to chip the enemy team so your own team can clean up. Liandry's + Rylai's is really good on her.

really ? I usually got tons of kills with her more than any other mages I played , just w e q and few aa the enemy's midlaner with ignite while he has 80% hp or less and he will die , also the most important thing is her w bringing enemies to her e and then q q q q q her q has a real short cd later which makes her like an adc and perfect in long fights .

Rylai's and repeatedly throwing rocks into their face, mostly. She doesn't deal enough to kill people with MR from a single rotation, and she has a non-damage ult. So you need to rely in poking them down and use a WE to finish them off if they misposition.

She's a weird type of sniper mage. Her W has ridiculous range and that's what you should be using to set yourself up. Most people make the mistake of trying to trap with E then W. That makes you too close. If you lead with W you control the battlefield. If you know you missed, hold onto E in case you have to put it as a wedge between you and the enemy. Q for poke obviously ^.^

Getting kills and doing the damage are two different things, there is nothing wrong with beeing 4/4/19. Thalia is great at kiteing and wearing down opponents, but usually not great at finishing them off, so naturally she's not getting as much kills.

Her damage doesn't feel that huge because it's spread out over multiple instance and her main dps comes from Q, which often is blocked by the opposeing frontline and requires you to frequently reposition so you have 'fresh ground' for empowered Qs. Also, if you do actually land the full combo on a squishy, you should do high damage. Her Q does ~440+1.17 ap if it fully hits, the W does 140+0.4, Her E if comboed with W(or other displaces) hits for 380+1.0, and another potential 150+0.4 if they stay in the area. So an normal combo hits for 960+2.57ap at18 the lvl 9 burst would be 730+2.57ap, so she reaches her main powerspike early on as so much comes from the Q base damage and the W+E rank 1 damage. Compared to other mages like Ori that combos(+ult) for 600+1.5ap(900+2.2ap) at18 or 390+1.5(540+2.2) at9, that's actually quite massive. However, since her main damage often hits the frontline, it's mandatory to get an early voidstaff, usually as second item after morellos, or atleast a 3ed.
