I have a theory for all the people who say "I ALWAYS have trolls/feeders on my team"

Eedat··58 votes·4,010 views

My theory is that these people are very toxic themselves and tilt their team into playing poorly by flaming and degrading them.

Thats the only thing I can think of because I play the exact same game as you people and its not nearly as much of a problem as any of you say.

This is exactly what I think.

What I noted is, when a toxic player sees someone else make a dumb mistake, they instantly call them "troll", which makes no sense at all.

The truth to this is

Too. Damn. High.

I literally went out to defend our base one time, got promptly deleted by the fed enemy team and one of my teammates went "Report X troll inting." I started explaining that I wasn't inting and they literally said:

"Did you just go out there intentionally?"

"Yes."

"And you died so you're inting."

Like wtf. The entire damn league community has so many PSA's for irrelevant crap (actually nvm some of it is relevant) but none for what an ACTUAL troll and inter is? Like I've literally been reported over that. I don't even fight it I just go "Go ahead it won't do anything lol." and I get no warning or anything.

P.S an ACTUAL troll is one who goes out and intentionally ruins the game. And inter is one who doesn't even try to run/fight they just stand there and let themselves get killed.

I don't get people who say autofill hurts them or ruined their elo. Like I get auto fill once out of every 10 games, maybe.

SirΤeemο3 votes

autofill sucks when you are on your promos.

you dont get autofilled on promos...

But other players do.

I have no idea what this means, but I'm pretty sure that nobody gets autofilled on their promos. Like, it's not possible.

No, you won't be. But they are saying the 4 other people on your team might be. Which severely reduces the chances of winning (if the enemy team isn't in the same boat, and it doesn't seem coded to ensure this).

xShiNjiNx3 votes

You join the game with 4 other people, and you get your main role. Cool, but your support player is a top main and is pissed cuz he got auto filled to support. That's the reality.

Don't worry. I'm the support main from that match and I got auto-filled mid. ;^)

Why does nobody ever seem to point out when someone on the enemy team is autofilled? It's "always on MY team". No its not lmao

People actually do, but the thing is, one has to look to data outside of the game to be able to tell that they have been autofilled. The issue is, you MAY have an autofilled player on your team while they do not on the enemy team. A team is only as strong as it's weakest link, which will generally be the autofilled player.

Oftentimes you can camp that autofilled player and increase your chance win if you know how to exploit a weaker player.

Eedat3 votes

A team is only as strong as it's weakest link

No its not. My last game my bot lane fed the enemy Draven 6 kills in ten minutes. Instead of raging at the I just used the time to get both solo lanes ahead.

We won.

If our team was only as strong as our 0/4 Janna or 1/3 Jhin, we would have lost.

Your team overall was then stronger then the enemy, and thus their weakest links were weaker than your weakest links. So in turn, a team (yours or the enemies) is only as strong as it's weakest link(s). Basically you are stating that your feeding bot lane wasn't making your team weaker, but it was, just not as much as the enemy top and mid evidently. :)

Eedat3 votes

A team is only as strong as it's weakest link

Your team overall was then stronger then the enemy

Those are literal contradictions

Hawkefire3 votes

That isn't a contradiction.

A team is only as strong as it's weakest link (at least generally speaking)

If your team won (even though you may have had autofill(s)), then your team was still stronger than the enemies team largely because your team played better or capitalized on a mistake better then the enemy team did.

Eedat2 votes

Your just confirming that I'm right lol.

Our team was NOT as strong (or weak in this case) as our weakest link because the rest of us were doing well. You then go on to say that our team averaged out to being stronger overall with is a complete contradiction to the saying "a chain is only as strong as the weakest link". I don't think you understand what this saying means. The saying means that one weak link will cause the entire chain to fail which obviously wasn't true. Me and our solo laners were able to compensate for our weak bot lane and won the game because our team averaged out to be stronger.

No

No, your team just wasn't weighing you down as much as the enemy team was weighing down that 6/0 Draven.

This is an extremely straightforward concept that I'm not sure why you don't understand.

In Halo, having a 1/13 teammate is much worse than simply fighting a 3v4. He is just dead weight that's allowing the enemy to reach the winning score faster.

In Football, a Guard who isn't blocking the opposing Tackle is preventing the Quarterback from completing a hand-off or pass. No matter how well the Center blocks the blitzing Linebacker, or how well the Receiver runs his route, it's the failing Guard who's setting the bar of how much the team can accomplish.

48983507DEL11 votes

...no it's not?

Your team is only as strong as your 0/4 Janna and 1/3 Jihn.

Their team is only as strong as their 1/6 Garen, 4/5 Rek'Sai, and 2/12 Azir.

Your team overall stronger than the enemy because your weakest players are still stronger than their weakest players.

This is a concept shared with most competitive team games like Halo, Counterstrike, Football, and Hockey. If one teammate is failing to do their job, the team itself can't succeed.

xShiNjiNx1 votes

Cuz were not in their lobby to know. So unless they say something in chat or we do research we have no idea. And not every1 handles autofill the same way. Some are okay about it others are not.

no to toxic2 votes

Autofill does hurt since it is very VERY likely that someone on your team is autofilled just cause of the sheer amount of players. Though i prefer that over having to wait 20 min.

48983507DEL11 votes

Me getting autofilled doesn't ruin my elo.

Other people refusing to play the role they got ruins my elo.

Personally I think it's one of 3 things

  1. They only notice the bad, they never notice when they have a great team nor do they remember it.
  2. They think anyone doing bad is a feeder and anyone not playing FOTM is a troll.
  3. They're lying because they're upset about a loss and want to vent.
RocketRelm7 votes

A troll always has a troll on their team, 100%. No need to talk about them tilting their teammates.

Lugg6 votes

I have to disagree. About 20% of the games I play are completely unwinnable. I have been on teams where EVERY other player on my team fed, and fed hard. This is without me saying anything in chat. It doesn't matter how good you are if you are facing 4 fed enemies, you are going to lose every time.

GayFluffyUnicorn5 votes

Just leave it. Noone is going to listen. Riot is holy and would NEVER create a rigged matchmaking. I tell you a story. Last season i got with a high winrate into plat 1, from there i got absolutely impossible to win games with tons of feeders afks down until plat 5. Then i got into dia. Dia 4. Dia 4 promos to three. Over SEVERAL days i could not win a single game anymore. More than 20 games lost until i got demoted to plat again. This season i started off in plat 5. Got into dia with 60% winrate. Got to dia 4 from then on the same, every game someone 0/15 until i was back in dia 5 0lp btw i had 5,0 average KDA over 40 games. Demolished everything and suddenly: trolls, feeder, afk. Now i switched to my smurf. Started in silver 2. Got into plat with 70% winrate. Now im at 58%. Every. fucking. game someone goes 0/15. Just had a syndra rq after dieing once, azir toplane going 2/10 and afk, 5,/15diana building bork, stattik and thornmail which lost us the game, no dmg, no tankyness and feeding and this will continue until you i'm down at 50% winrate. Riot does not want competition in the higher elos or idk. Once you made it to dia 3 so you will end up there every year due to how the system works you've made it. Otherwise if you got unlucky like me the system will force you to stay low.

skyskee0081 votes

Yup the system is the ONLY reason you can't climb out of D4.

People in high diamond/master/challenger are of the same skill level as you, but just got lucky. Foh.

Some games are unwinnable but I assure you that you've lost winnable games because of your own mistakes and nothing else. Also mistakes aren't always deaths - missed opportunities are also mistakes (I.e. possible flank/invade/dive) but you don't see them because you don't have the game knowledge to even realize those missed opportunities even happened.

Lugg1 votes

You are probably right on most accounts. If your win rate gets too high, they saddle you with horrible teammates. It seems the quickest and easiest way to climb (without having those horrid games) is to keep your win rate 50-55%.

BigNasty30015 votes

Why is it so hard to believe that others experiences are different from your own?

This thread is full of the flawed philosophy that if you complain about trolls in your games, you are automatically wrong and subject to ridicule. This is silly, as it is just completely not addressing what they are saying, only telling them that they are a liar and probably toxic. Try this attitude in any other group environment, see how it works out.

Your theory is crap. There is nothing to substantiate it, only Riot fanboys in the forums upvoting you.

How is it OK to complain about flamers, but not OK to complain about trolls? This entire attitude is extremely immature, and naive. I highly doubt if you're out of high school.

skyskee0081 votes

If YOURE not a troll than it is STATISTICALLY impossible for you to get more trolls than the enemy team over the course of N games. 4 possible trolls on your team, 5 possible trolls on enemy team.

Some people on boards act like they ONLY lose games because of trolls, but statistically speaking, you WILL WIN more games because of trolls than you will lose. Unless of course you do something to perpetuate trolls, which they probably do by being toxic.

MFTORANK15 votes

No, you legit get games where people just do not care. Around Gold elo some people say ''gg'' after one kill, then become passive-agressive in chat, these people will never receive any ban. Sure there isn't a troll in everygame, but there's always someone who doesn't give a shit and should have just played a normal game.

I've kept records. I tracked 97 of my games this season:

Of those games, there was a troll, ragequit, AFK, or extremely toxic player in 20.4% of my games. They were on my team in 11.22% of games, and on the enemy team in 10.20% of games.

I'd imagine that the extra % is probably because it's harder to spot someone trolling on the enemy team.

What this says is that I get a roughly-equal number of game-ruiners on either team, but I certainly notice the ones on my team much more often.

It also says that a massive 20% of games my games are decided by random chance based on which team got the incredibly-toxic team mate, and that is rather depressing and doesn't say good things about League's competitive integrity.

skyskee0081 votes

Finally a reasonable post. Equal trolling on each side.

Trolling is not the reason you can't climb, but is DEFINITELY a problem.

Ariel the Cruel4 votes

The more likely cause is Negativity Bias. People remember negative experiences better than positive ones. Riot even did a public demonstration of this in the old forums - reviewing match history of people who claimed to experience non-stop negativity and showed it to be fractional.

In the linked article, they give a magic 5:1 average ratio. Meaning it would take 5 good games to break even with one bad. When you throw the law of large numbers into that, if can result in very frustrating strings of perceived negativity.

GayFluffyUnicorn1 votes

Unfortunately i've been very suspicious when riot gives us "numbers" and "data". Might be the long record of riot providing false information.

Ariel the Cruel1 votes

Negativity bias isn't something Riot came up with. The linked article isn't even related to LoL.

Where is this record of Riot providing false information?

Sckullzz3 votes

Agreed, but it's a hypothesis, not a theory... <3

Chibi Bronzlife2 votes

Well, it's also luck based, you could be really lucky and they could be really unlucky. I had a lot of trolls/afkers/and feeders at points throughout my time playing League, but I'm not toxic I don't troll, though on a rare occasion I'll pull out things that are very unique to me. So issuing blanket statements like yours doesn't really work.

Thats the only thing I can think of because I play the exact same game as you people and its not nearly as much of a problem as any of you say.

I was Platinum for 3 seasons in a row (while playing nearly exclusively solo) and now I can't even get out of Silver.

I mean, one Season I was so high in Plat, I was playing with mid-tier Diamonds and the next one I can't even win in Silver, because all lanes except mine are getting demolished in the first 5 minutes of a match.

The joke is that I reached Plat a full season before an acquaintance from school who started playing at least a year before me and now he has Diamond in two queues while, I'm struggling in Silver 2.

I've seen him play throughout those years and he wasn't any better than me. It's just that he is lucky to get teammates, that can actually fend for themselves.

Part of it is that, part of it is also a couple of aspects of human nature, namely:

  1. People remember negative experiences more consistently than positive ones. This tends to skew most people's bias towards being pessimistic. Believe it or not, this is actually a survival trait, just like fear. This is known as negativity bias.
  2. People remember things that fit with their expectations better than things that don't. This is known as confirmation bias.
  3. This rather interesting factor called the 'Observer Expectancy Effect', which in essence means that if someone expects something to happen and they have influence over if it happens, they will (usually subconsciously) tend to influence things towards the outcome they expect. This is part of why people who have a defeatist attitude tend to lose more often, and is why any good survival training will drill into your head how important having a positive attitude is.

Taken all together, this means that if you asked a random player to (without looking at their match history) tell you the ratio of games in which they experienced negativity to those in which they didn't, their answer will almost always be insanely skewed towards negativity regardless of the actual value.

My theory is they're the trolls themselves and don't understand that life doesn't owe them anything.
